Hi all,

My lovely Hoovermatic is now fully operational and restored. Tested it out yesterday and it performed great with no leaks. I have decided to christened her "Dilys".

Here are a few teasers, enjoy!

So what do you think?

Of the work done to the machine?

Maiden Wash tomorrow!

BTW: Is it normal for these machines to take a couple of minutes to drain the tub? The belt on the pump looks good to me and they are sturdy fibre type belts. I think they are indestructable.

James.

James---it looks GREAT! And I know they are fun to use. My Hoover takes about 2 minutes to drain the tub. Macboi on here is a Hoover expert, he can expalin different pumps used thru the years, but yours is very common timing for drianing.
Have fun on the maiden wash, congrats on the hard work--
Mark

James well done it looks a load better than it did, I presume you managed to fathom the wiring then ;-)

Enjoy tomorrow

Thanks for the replies...

Mark: Thanks for verifying the time. I just thought that 2+ minutes is a bit long compared to spinning and rinsing. They are powerful pumps, the water shoots across the sink but luckily the hose manages to grip the ledge well enough to not fall out on the floor.

I was worried that the pump belt was damaged because the spin motor hood came off mid spin (worn screw) and I got a scare. The belt seemed ok and if it did get a bite from the hood it would have snapped. These belts are quite hardy anyway aren't they as they are wrapped in fibre which adds to the strong factor?

Gary: The restoration was my most expensive topping at least £60! So it would need to look good! I got 5 cans of paint, internal pipes, external pipes, castors, spin mat etc. for that so it wasn't that bad.

I just did some guesswork and realised what wires went where and half an hour later it was right.

The rinsing is great in this machine, far better than manually in the Hotpoint Spin Dryer. You have to keep up the pace though!

Also, instruction manual anyone?

The main area where I'd like people to rate is the paintwork as that was the biggest part of the restoration and I want to know if it looks right? I think is does?

Fantastic, it’s so rewarding when you finally get to the end of a restoration, and as for the paintwork, the only opinion that matters is your own, if you like it then that all you have to worry about. But it looks good from here.

Well done!

You remind me so much of myself when I was your age. When it was me, myself and I who would never have guessed there were people out there who were just as crazy over a Hoovermatic as I was.

May your new washing machine provide you with many more years of good service.

Thanks for the lovely comments...

I will keep you updated and post some more pics tomorrow after the maiden wash and a video too!

Lee: I hope your 1851/03 repaint turns out well and thanks for remarking my paintjob.

Louis: As you can tell, I am crazy about this machine! I am the only collector in Ireland who owns one (as far as I know). Irish people in the 70's could only afford standard models and could not be bothered spending the extra 20 odd pounds for the deluxe models and this goes for both Hoover and Hotpoint/Gala. So when the caller mentioned Hoovermatic Deluxe I though it would be a plastic covered 90's model but he then mentioned 3314L and I was silenced. The rarity and love for this model powered me through this holiday long restoration and has obviously paid off.

Goodnight all.

Maiden Washday!

Hi all,

How are you all keeping?

I've had a great day with my Hoovermatic Deluxe 3314L and everything went smooth and I'm very pleased with her. However during the very last spin when I was just about to lift the lid and finish the fusebox tripped! I changed the plug fuse and then I found out the fusebox tripped so I put the switch back up again and turned on the wash motor and everything was ok. I then put down the lid and the fusebox tripped again! So the problem is the spin motor and I am really worried. Can anybody diagnose a scenario for me before I take the motor out tomorrow?

Symptoms:
No smoke or bad smell.
No arcing.
No straining noises.
Brushes are ok.

What could it be because it was performing good and I don't think it's burnt out, at least I hope it's not. Would it be possible for some kind of metal debris to get sucked in and short it? If so what damage would there be?

Pics and video soon hopefully.

James.

Have you seen any signs of a leak?

ozzie908's profile picture
Especially near the spin motor? I have a dim recollection of a twin tub that was ok when dry for spinning then after a good wash session would blow the trip as there was a small drip that shorted it out, I am not saying thats the problem but its worth a look... Good luck anyways....:)

Austin...

Hi there,

I think the motor is shorting but not sure what is causing it yet. There are no leaks anywhere in the machine eg. pressure chamber, bellows or pipes. Other than a little drip from the pump which is normal for most Hoovermatics. That isn't a serious one as it is intermittent and it only leaks a teaspoon or less over the course of an hour. There is no signs of water splashing near the motor or the hood on top of it. My greatest fear now is that possibly sometime during dissassembly or reassembly a small screw might have fallen into it and whizzed around and shorted it at last? It's only a guess of a bad scenario. I hope it isnt' the case and that the motor hasn't been damaged as I love this machine to bits.

James.

spinner tripping circuit breaker

Hi James, your a fast worker that was quick restoration ,well done.As regards for it tripping breaker a couple of things that i used to come across back in the day are .The wiring harness to spin motor runs accros close to spin can drive pulley and can rub on it also the terminals on the suppresor are very close together and can short out.Its rare for the motor to cause the problem as its not earthed and is supported on rubber mounts so efectivley double insulated.Hope tthis helps regards Nige.

Fault Finding

electron1100's profile picture
Hello James

Just a thought, before you go taking out the motor, can you just disconnect the motor (remove the two wires going to it) and see if when you close the lid it still throws the trip, if it does then your problem is not with the motor but with the wiring or a switch in the spinner circuit

Obviously if doesnt throw trip then you might well have a short somewhere on the motor

Gary

Congrats James on a very nice respray.

The colour and finish look good to me - I would be very happy with it.

Hope that you get the small issues sorted and have fun with the machine.

Regards
paul
p.s just dawned on me - though I dont have the 3314L instruction manual, I think I do have the 3312L instruction manual!
When I get chance, I will send/post a copy of it for you.

Thanks for the replies...

I took out the motor and it's a little dirty. The following pictures will help you determine the condition but I think it's ok. I'll check the wiring tomorrow.

I'm very worried!

I tried it without the motor connected and nothing tripped then plugged it back in again and it tripped! I hope the pictures are a help? I just don't get it TBH because it was all well until this. There are no rubbing sounds when I rotate it. Would it be possible that the suppressor is gone?

A sorrowful James.

brusholders

could check the brusholders to see if one has grounded out, also the field
coils-if the armature is grounded you will get a lot of arcing at the
commutator. It was mentioned in a post above that the motor is rubber mounted,
so if not grounded to washer frame, brusholders could be both grounded and
conducting across to each other.Could be the suppressor too-an ohmeter or
even a battery powered test light should pin down the problem.

I don't know what to do now...

Will I go ahead and find a new motor or is there anything I can do at this stage?

James.

Hello Luv!

launderess's profile picture
According to my Hoover Service and Parts manual:

For twin tub washin gmachine models covered:

MACHINE BLOWS FUSES:

Possible Cause:
Plug Outlet - Make sure the fuse or breaker box amphere rating is sufficient to handle total current drawn by all applications on the line.

Terminal Block - Check the cord wires on the terminal block to make sure the hot wires are not contacting each other thus creating a short.

Machine Wired Incorrectly - Check wriring diagram against actual wiring on the machine to make sure the machine is wired correctly. At this time you can also check for a possible bare wire that might be causing this trouble.

Yes James, I've been enjoying your posts quite the bit since you've tackled this machine. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond to the thread, I have not been around a whole lot. I envy you a bit as I wish we had the 3314L over here on our side of the pond, it's a perfect machine in many ways.

To address your question about the pump out time, it is a little excessive for your machine, but not terrible considering everything. Your machine is probably sucking a little air from the spinner side due to a brittle or unseated plunger in the pump valve. Also the rubber grommet on top of the pump where the selector rod goes in can suck air and leak water and cause this issue as well. On the US models, we have a pinch valve setup that leaves the spin port open all the time and the draining is 2-3 minutes. The older US models and most all European models, yours included, have a sealed suction setup where only one or the other can feed into the pump at a time with no air. This creates a much more powerful pumping action. Air in the system slows the water movement down considerably.

I think the new design for us was intentional as these machines were only used in small houses and apartments where there were no hookups for a full-size. Because of this, people often used the bathroom or other shallow sinks that, if draining the entire washtub into, could be overwhelmed and overflow. The constant air being mixed in from the spinner slowed the water coming out of the drain hose down considerably.

Good Luck and enjoy your new Hoover

-Tim

air in water pump

I own a hoovermatic de luxe 3316 which is made in Australia and they have the same pump as the US models with the pinch valve system and it is a pain because it takes a lot longer to empty

what i usually do is open up the valve and let the spinner tub fill up till i see water coming up thru the spin cans holes at the bottom and then i start the spinner and it pumps a bit quicker that way
