how does the machine sense the load size, soiling, and calculate the detergent?

I don't believe it does

In my opinion, the advertising is lying: sensors are too expensive for a "normal" washing machine, and I am not sure it is possible to "analyse the type of fabric" or even "determine the degree of soiling" and, even if it were possible, it would be too complex and expensive.

What a washing machine could do is just weighting the load, determine the absorbency and measure the hardness of the water (although very, very imprecisely) and then adjust some minor parameter (probably the length of the washing phase or adding a rinse).

The rest it's advertising.

Sorry but why measure everything when you can type in different stats like hardness of water or degree of soiling?

I have to put in different stats before I do start the wash, the rest is all automatic with my Miele Supertronic.

There is a special water sensing monitor, which most machines don't have this sensor. the sensor can see how dirty the water is during the wash phase, and add the extra detergent if required.
The Automatic programmes, are simply ran like Miele machines, where they weigh the load, and sense the absorbency and adjust the sequence to the load sensed.
