Warning for vintage aluminum tubs ... ALL detergent has recently changed (supposedly improved) its formulation. I'm doing laundry right now in my Maytag E2LP wringer washer, and the detergent has totally darkened the aluminum. Fortunately with a lot of elbow grease and SOS pads, I'll be able to bring it back to the lustre I like. But I WON'T be using ALL again in this machine!

As a side note - the new scent is different too. I'm disappointed - I preferred the old scent. I think I'll write them...

Aluminum is one of the more reactive metals. Still, hard to imagine what they put in All that attacks aluminum. Or why.

don't know why....

they put it in All, but it is probably the same thing that is in dishwasher detergents that turns aluminum black....just my opinion, not based on any fact that I know of...

I have

also found that the new Tide Ultra with bleach powder does not all dissolve and leaves specs on clothes even after the rinse. I stopped using it. I tried using a smaller amount than recommended and it still left little spots of undissolved residue. Guess I will go liquid.

Very interesting reports

will investigate, my first guess on the All darkening the aluminum is that it was mis formulated with too much alkali which would react with the AL but also it will weaken the fibers of the clothing.

as for the Tide powder it maybe they are using zeolites to soften the water and they maybe forming calcium/magnesium curds on the clothes

both not good developments

There is nothing wrong with the new detergents formulas

me i do not see anything wrong with the newer detergent formulas so that means that these new detergent formulas are made to be use with a cold water wash and cold water rinse as they have optimal cleaning power in cold water wash.

Well I have not had any problem with the new formula for the new ultra Gain powder orginal scent. it works great in hot, warm and cold water washes.

The only detergent (previously made by Lever Brothers) I would still use would be Wisk HE.I haven't tried it since the takeover of detergents of Lever's took place though. It may have the same breakdown of chemicals as the new All.

I had a $1.00 coupon...

lovestowash's profile picture

and as it was already on sale, the final price was less than $2.00...

referring to All Powder with Oxy-Active whatever...

emptying a load of colored cottons in warm water from the Amana/SQ, I discovered Oxy-Actives everywhere...

as I refuse to throw anything away, I made sure on subsequent loads the detergent was dissolved in hot water, before adding the laundry...

on the other hand, the All Small & Mighty HE in the blue bottle is the favorite for the Westy...
