Have noticed one has just sold on Ebay for 52.82. A lot of money ? although it stated as being in working order so perhaps not too much to pay for a rare beast.

If it is fully functional it's a bargain.

Valuable Philips

I had better keep our Philips AWB098 in good running order then. I wonder what its value might be with a full box of 'critical' spares such as motor, programmer etc ?

LOVE those old Philips washers. By any standards, for a washing machine in full working order, £52 is a a bargain!

can we have a photo of the front please?

I may have one of these, it is an AWB something, don't remember the number. It's about 400 rpm spin, Italian made, induction motor, not the Philips DC motor.Dark brown dashboard.

Mine is right at the back of the shed, hard to get to, hence I don't know the number.
It might be 094???

Hi Chris.

Be great to see your machine and know which one it is!

Did a small bit of research of Philips model lineup, expecting it to be simple and easy to understand.

TOTAL POLAR OPPOSITE!

Branding i.e model 808, 707, 606 etc bore no resemblenace to the model numbers.

Then they did loads of obscure exclusive versions for UK independents. All in all, trying to fathom Philips out is one big ARRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.

To know what a possible AWB094 is, would therefore be very useful.

Paul

Are my eyes deceiving me or is that 2 heating elements i can see.

Post# 531752 , Reply# 19   7/20/2011 at 08:35 (4,663 days old) by gizmo (Victoria, Australia)

mine is an AWB904

Photo to follow in next few days. It won't be much of a photo as there is so much heavy stuff in the way, but you'll see the fascia at least.

Twin heating elements - I also have a Philips skinny top loading tumble washer, slightly newer. It uses the DC permag motor. I love it, though my machine doesn't work any more - electronic controller gone.

It uses the heating element in series with the wash motor to control the motor speed during wash. (all switched by the electronic motor controller module.)

I wonder if the washer in the photo above uses the elements in the motor control circuit too? It could use one or two elements in series with the motor to give a variation in speeds. Or use one in series with the motor for speed control, and the other for water heating. Note the element above the motor has 800w stamped in it, so it would need two of those to do anything useful.

My old Asko has two elements, If I recall right they are 1200w and 1800w, the 1800w is used on 10 amp circuits and the extra 1200w element is used in 15 amp versions. (at 240 volts).

Chris.

Yay, so glad you have got it, looks amazing. Can't wait to see it in operation. Do you have the matching dryer or do we need to keep our eyes peeled for one? Does Rob's Grandfarthers dryer match.

Hi Chris.

Yep - model AWB904 was an Italian made, slow spin machine and it would be great to know what it looked like.

Did a quick spreadsheet of all the Philips UK sold models (that I have been able to find) from about 1978, through to the very start of the right hand drive Series 90 machines.
As you can see, there is a horrific number of variations, with the ones showing in bold me having a photograph of. Its probably about 50/50, with the vast majority of mystery machines being exclusives - Mike - why didnt you keep your sales literature!!!!!! Be saving me old headache if you did! :-)

Be nice to turn AWB904 into bold...

Hi Richard.

I want to procure a new belt before trying it out (this one is going to turn into another Liberator situation, cant you tell!).
The exisiting belt is, as far as I am concerned, badly freying and cracked, so it puts me off letting it do some work a bit.

Rob's grandads dryer is a match to the AWB082 and is a black faciad dryer, so yep I am looking for a matching dryer.

A D165 would be nice...

Whatever was mixed in with the layer of grime on the facia, has reacted with it over time and has left black splodges that I cant get off.

Doesnt bother me too much as they tend to be in areas of useage and I like the machine so much, that I can afford it the odd mark here and there...

awb904

Here are some photos of my awb904

I think (not certain) this was the only true Philips front loader sold here.(they also had an Australian made version of the Hoover Zodiac with Philips badges.)

Other Philips washers were rebadged Japanese top loaders and twin tubs. [there was a Philips badged version of the Hoover 720 too - a Dutch badge(Philips) on an Australian made machine (Hoover) of an American design (Blackstone.]

This poor old machine is languishing at the back of my shed, has been for years - hence the layer of dust...

Chris.

the awb904 has enamel steel drum, not the poly drum shown above.
A very basic machine but I like it.
V-E-R-Y long wash, three rinses, intermediate spins after every rinse. (I think after the wash too, can't remember for sure.) Rinses much better than the Hoovers of the same era, which did 5 rinses but only 2 spins.

It pumps out before spinning, unlike the permag motor Philipses which start spinning with a full drum of water.

Great work there Paul, looks in real good nic, the boot looks in good shape as well, the one on the Electra was original, for a seal soo thin you would have thought they would have ripped easy...perhaps flexible is best... Now, does it have the elusive transit bracket tucked away and attached inside?? I can see where the transit instructions where stuck on the back...

Have ordered a belt and cant wait to film the 1000rpm spin drain..heres the Electra, just love that sound...

Hi Chris, good to hear from you, those 904`s sold well on price through the Independants, I visited some holiday cottages on the west coast a couple of years ago that still had two working models albeit a little rusty on the fronts...

Do I spy I white cabinet slope front keymatic to the right of the Phillips??

Hows the house build going?? or is it complete, would love to see the pics and what inverter / low voltage washer are you using now??

cheers, Mike

Hi chris.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to get the photos of your 904.

For some reason, I was expecting a left hand drive machine - havent the foggiest idea why.

Its always good to solve a model mystery.

When I get back home, I will try and find the which magazine containing its details and will post a photo of them.

Cheers
Paul

Transit bracket ... :-)

Hi Mike.

No - suspension is free from restraint though, with it being moved around, I actually wish it did have them fitted.

Thanks for ordering a belt! Let me know when it arrives, then arrange to pop over to Rob's and I will bring the machine across. Be nice to have a proffessional video of it, rather than one of my own.

All assuming that the machine works of course.

Fingers crossed.
Paul
p.s at the moment Rob is doing battle with a blind Servis Quartz. Why cant things be simple?

Hi Mike

Good spotting, yes that is a slope front Keymatic to the right.

In front is a Turner Sapphire rescued from the rubbish tip. It came home with us from a holiday at Bendigo, lying down on the back seat of the dearly beloved's Holden Barina. [UK- Vauxhall Corsa B ]

The poor old Keymatic was found in an inner suburb of Melbourne when I was on my way to visit the rellies some years ago, upside down on the kerb with its motor missing. (they used to get pinched for barbecue rotisseries, due to the worm drive gearbox.)

The intention was to get a replacement motor for it, but I haven't seen one. Otherwise the machine isn't in bad nick. It even has a good door boot, and the tub -to- pump complicated drain hose is new old stock, sold to me about 10 years ago as the last one in captivity.

I should post about the house and inverter/ solar power system in the "as the tub turns" forum, but I haven't upgraded my membership yet, should get around to it soon. Suffice to say we are living in the new house, though it ain't finished yet...not sure if owner built houses are ever really finished...

Chris
