Hi everyone.
Wow amazed I've stumbled across this site. have been into old twin tub washing machines since i was a kid and remember gran and mum using them. Have just bought a Hoovermatic Deluxe T5054 twin tub and been told the drain pumps not working so picking it up tomorrow and will have a look. anyone here got a parts diagram for these machines.
Can post some pics when i get it home and sorted.
Thanks. Si

Welcome!

Hope you will have hours of fun with you machine and browsing here.

You have a great machine to start with, I should know as I own the 3314L, one of it's many predecessors, from 1975. They are amazing machines and very easily maintained as their contruction was simple, Hotpoint being slightly more heavier and more to go wrong but didn't as they were quality.

Anyway you have a lovely machine and I don't have any diagrams for it specifically but I'm sure it is basically the same as my 3314L diagrams.

What did the seller say to you about the pump? If it isn't working altogether then it's just a belt which is easy.

Piccy of mine.

James.

Welcome Si. I'm into twintubs too, grandma's Easy got me started but I don't have the space or resources to collect. TTs are much harder to find in US than UK and EU.

Welcome to the group!

Twin tubs, a way of life for some round ere, as fer me like well- Get it in the automatic on a boil lololololol.

Once you get one, you have to get em all! One of each make, at least, I mean then the fun triples. Hotpoint to clean properly, and spin properly and rinse properly and OOOOvah and Servis to use as Hostess Trollies and Mop Buckets!

Enjoy!

I don't at the moment, I had a 3314L and 3334 and had to get rid of them both due to lack of storage but am always on the lookout - I found the 3314L dumped in the alley out the back of the house - almost as if had be heaven sent LOL!!

T5054 Problems...

Hi again,

I have 3 possible situations for your spinner problem.

1. Carbon Brushes done.
2. Suppressor (mines blew and I just bypassed it, it only reduces interference and I've had no problems)
3. Wiring least likely.

3314L's are lovely and not very common, at least in Ireland as I am lead to believe I own the only restored one in Ireland.

It was a wreck when I got it but new paint and parts did the trick.
The body wasn't rotten so that was good.

James.

Ah thanks

Me and T'other half (matchboxpaul)have amassed around 60 washers dryers dishwashers etc, automatics mostly but 2 twinnies are in there. T5054 which imo is Hoovers nicest design and colourway.

Gutting to think of those long gone Twinnies but they can be found and restored given the time and inclination so nothing to worry about now.

My profile pic was taken on "The Nab" on boxing day last year, The Nab being a landmark in Pauls home village of Whalley in Lancashire. So picturesque! Love it up there, makes for some great views.

Are you on facebook by chance? plenty of pics on my profile, few of the twinnies and a few of the automatics I use as daily machines,

Hi Si.

Welcome to the club - popped you a quick replay message in Youtube earlier in the evening.

Congrats on the acquisition of your T5054. I am sure you will iron out any isue with it.
When you get your hands on it, be sure to post us some pics of it.
If you need any parts diagrams - let us know! There are a fair number of service manuals out there still and someone I am sure, myself included, will oblige with photographs and scans of them.

Below is mine and Rob's T5054, picked up last year from North Wales. As I mentioned in the Youtube message, had we not poked our noses into a shop and Rob asked about old appliances, then it would have been took to the tip later that same day.

Apart from a spinner lid release that failed to lift the lid and being a bit tobacco stained, the machine was in full working order.
Certainly a lucky fine.

Again, welcome to the club and have fun tinkering tomorrow.
Paul
p.s congrats again to James and his excellent restoration of his 3314L.

and from the Dark Side of the Force :-)

Below is the other twinnie we have, in the form of a Hotpoint 9410A Supermatic De Luxe.

Rob is right!

You will start with a Hoover.
Then you will want a Hotpoint, to compare.
Then you will want a Serivs, to compare and contrast with the Hoover and Hotpoint.
Then you will want one of each bodystyle.
Then you will find yourself surrounded - the bug will have bitten and there aint a pill to take.

Enjoy the ride!

Paul

Rob, LOl.

Welcome Simon, yes get one of each brand and Make up your own mind.

Look forward to hearing how you get on with the Hoovermatic, you'll find no Brand loyalties round here, lol, not.

As Paul says we've loads of information, though it sounds like your used to working on these machines, let us know if you need any parts, see if I can help, I've got loads of spin motor brushes for instance.

I'm only over in Cardiff if your calling through, and as Hoovermatic said there are a few of us in this M4 area.

All the best

Thats very kind of you.Yes im always in cardiff or heading past to west wales. so easy to get too.
Ive got some experience in the hoovermatic but the older models. Hotpoint twintub have loads of experience with them. and yes spares could become very handy for sure. Have you got many machines yourself then?

Ah

if the boyfriend doesn't know, then best we don't descend on mass, armed with marrigolds, wash tongs and boxes of twin tub Daz.

In my case the twin tub moved in before I did. Then I moved in and many more followed.

One day. if I get another am sure will have to have some open afternoon for a visit.
So how many machines have u got then? u in Cardiff itself? used to live down the bay in the spillers and bakers building.

Hi Si.

Irrespective of brand (although those with a protective cover are best, to reduce the risk of damage), twin tubs are great as they are easily hidden.

Chuck a cloth over it and you have a handy and easy to move sideboard, although they can be a bit like wonky shopping trolleys in the old steering department.
Add some ornaments and a bunch of flowers and he probably wont even notice. Maybe?
Ok, so I am probably clutching at straws in all honesty, but worth a try nonetheless :-)

Most collectors have indulged in smuggling machines into the house, hoping people don't notice. lol.

Been collecting for the last 3 and a half years, though Rob had a handful of vintage vacs for a year or so before that.

Before you know it, they will be everywhere and then the fun really begins - trying to fathom out where to put them.

Before I knock off for the night and just in case you dont know, below is how to date your new old machine.
You have to know the decade yourself though.

Roll on tomorrow.
Paul
p.s just seen that the squares and lines are a bit faint - think it can be made out though....

About 10 Twin tubs

and more than ten automatics,in varing states of repair and full working order.
I'm close to the centre of Cardiff in Roath.

You look like your having a great time with the Hotpoint, the perspective makes it look very small.

the first Hoover twin tub I ever remember seeing was in my elementary school's cafeteria and that was way back around 1963. We had just gotten our great Lady Kenmore all in one front loading gas washer dryer. Our teacher,Mrs Rockman, had us students go to the cafeteria's commercial kitchen and learn how to make peanut butter fudge. As we got there,I heard water swirling around and a quiet buzz sound. The closer we got,the more I realized somebody was doing wash. I could smell the detergent (All) and, once I saw where the sound was,I opened it and saw all the dish towels and aprons going around in soapy water. It was entrancing to say the least and I almost lost out on making my fudge!Welcome aboard!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Grandma's street in Pittsburgh where I met the Easy was Marlborough Ave. Curious coincidence. Few of you are old enough to have met a fullsize twintub.

Or a 1983 Panasonic like I had. I lived in Hawaii and as far as I know that's the only place in the US that got them. Both tubs dual speed and clutchless, standalone pump. IINM, Hoover never managed all those longevity features.

I'd still be tempted to have a Hoover if they were available here. But I'd much prefer a Panasonic, which I can't even find a picture of. Because the Hoovers were frangible where the Panasonic was bulletproof.

Hi Si! Welcome to the site!  Before you know it you'll have machines you don't know what to do with, I've just finished helping mum reorganise her garage, I've put all my collection in date order... however what she doesn't know is all I was doing was making additional room for me lol.  Fortunately the garage is round the corner from the house, so it's easy enough to sneak things in :-).

I'm often in the Wilts area, my better half (a vac collector) lives there, and there's several others in the area as others have mentioned!

Take care and hoep you enjoy your stay here!

P.S. to clarify, I think despite holding a box of Fairy, I'm the manliest guy in that twinny pic ;)

Was it a deliberate choice to go for a Hoovermatic? Like your gran found, they're not as easy to master as a Hotpoint, but you get the knack after a while, having said that, had mine four years and still overload the tub sometimes (worth using the spin can to 'measure' load size before it goes in the tub)...

Si (the Scottish one)

Post# 533338 , Reply# 42   7/28/2011 at 08:05 (4,649 days old) by welshsi ()

Hi Si.
Thanks for the welcome (and hoovermatic tip)
Yes it was a choice to go for the hoovermatic. I was brought up with the hotpoint twin tub but when i was 14 was given a 1961 Hoovermatic and had it in the outhouse for a few years washing blankets etc. Always found it more exciting and i think gave a better wash (maybe I'm biased)
What i also couldn't get over was the speed of a wash with the Hoovermatic. Yes u could time the wash on a Hotpoint to the same but i do think the Hoover had the edge. Also finding it was lighter to move etc.
How about u? What got you into this at the start then?
Si (The Welsh one )

Warmest of welcomes, Si.

Most collectors have indulged in smuggling machines into the house, hoping people don't notice. lol.

I’m one of them but always get caught, thing is to shove it in the garage for a few weeks and then introduce it into the house, not to cover it and it dose not stand out too much, well that’s how I do it know, I have smuggled in the odd thing and cover with a blanket, that’s like a red rag too her-in-doors “what the hell is that, how much money have you wasted” just like a howler letter in Harry Potter.

I have just finished restoring the Liberator 1851/03

And also have 18680 plus 95622, and a machine which I have made my own microchip controller for which one day may just get finished, it just keeps evolving.

Recently added a Hoover Constellation vacuum into the mix.

If u put it on a long wash and don't set extra rinse and use one of those liquid tablets the clothes come out with the gell case on them even after they been rinsed etc
