Hi guys. Well here it is. Albeit not very good pics. Collected my Hoovermatic De luxe T5054 this morning from a guy in Northampton. Said the pump wasn't working but i got it home at 11.45 and by 12 Well the pics say it all. Think he just didn't know how to use it. So now its in bits in the kitchen as was owned by his 95 year old mum and didn't do much cleaning of the machine when she finished.
Yay! Si

It looks in great shape. Love the powerful water turnover in the pic. Have you tried the auto rinse yet. It's just missing the genuine drain hose. So jealous i want one!

Yep - was my copy!

Hi Si.

Glad to see that all seems to be well and certainly looks to be in good condition.
Always nice when things go according to plan.

How old has it turned out to be?

Dug out the instruction manual and took some piccies of it for you. Not that you will be needing it, but always a useful reference tool.

Here you go...

This is the fianl page of the english section of the instruction manual, so you arent missing anything after this - unless you want to read it in Norwegian :-)

Hope it proves useful and if you do need any servicing information - just let us all know and someone will oblige.

Hey Paul
What servicing should I do to the machine then? Any bearings to oil or belts to tighten or do the belts have self tentioners?
Btw the strip of metal that covers the join between the tub and spinner with the rinse hole in needs re-gluing. Apart from that it goes well.
Si

servicing

Great machine there Si, as you say the belts pretty much look after themselves, and you'll know if the spinner belt needs tensioning because you can hear the motor start up and then the spinner catches up as if there were a clutch, it should just run up to speed quickly. Its this fast acceleration that makes the autorinse much faster than the hotpoints, your not waiting for the spinner to power up via the clutch.

Always worth greasing the pulsator bearing, and if you feel inclind I would strip the pump down and grease the impellor bearing to, otherwise its more a matter of dealing with any faults as they may or may not arise.

Anyway, I can just imagine your other halfs face when he get in the kitchen and it's all in bits, with no understanding of how much enjoyment your haveing, all the best with the external restoration and servicing

Mathew

Great picture of the wash action there - you can really see the power of the pulsator - I want to get another one now, seeing that!! I am going to have to make space for it somehow. Glad it turned out to be fully working too :-)

Looks good,

Oh the other word of warning, you will find yourself unable to look at houses if you should want to move without reckoning up if the kitchen taps will fit twinny hoses, alcoves and pokey's to store them and the kitchen sink being able to take a U hook for the drain hose without toppling out while the spinners pumping out the suds like Niagara Falls.

Told ya t'was a way of life hahaha :)

Yea yours looks to be in great condition too., Don't you just hate these mixer taps for the Twin tub pipes lol.
Found if i screw the end off my mixer then the pipe fit perfect.Well as long as i don't give to much pressure or it spurts out over the windows lol.

Well I'm having a cuppa then have 3 big loads of washing to do YaY! gonna have some fun today i think.

Well the Hoovermatic is going really well at the moment. Now I've sussed the amount of clothes to put in works really well. Only thing it doesn't seem to like are Jeans. especially very tough ones. Anyone got tips for them?
Still can't get over how quick u can do a wash in it. Did a load of bath towels and one i deliberately got dirty by wiping the tilled floor round the kitchen. (white towels btw) washed them in a v hot wash for the 4 mins. and.... SPOTLESS. I'm impressed.

Post# 533375 , Reply# 29   7/28/2011 at 11:09 (4,626 days old) by supermaticjames (Donegal, Ireland)
Jeans...

Though I've never washed jeans on my Hoovermatic (towels being the most common thing washed in it), but I've heard that the just hate them full stop. Someone did mention washing them one at a time though.

RE: Deliberately getting things dirty, most common trick I pull to bulk up a load or make multiple loads LOL!

Post# 533377 , Reply# 30   7/28/2011 at 11:14 (4,626 days old) by welshsi ()

Ha.
Yea well you gotta have some "items" to wash haven't you lol.
Yea i found with really soft jeans adding a few other things like pants or socks or t shirts then it works fine.
But used it with a solid pair of jeans and it REALLY didn't get on well lol

Post# 533389 , Reply# 31   7/28/2011 at 12:33 (4,626 days old) by welshsi ()

Well just finished a Huge wash.
Had 5 loads in total. And i guess i was being fussy as changed the water probably bit more than i needed too.Well apart from the pair of jeans that turned the water Dark blue lol. The auto rinse worked Very well and i found measuring softener into a jug full of water (approx 3-4 pint) then poured over the clothes after the last rinse. PERFECT.
What I'm really surprised about was the fact that u can wash all those odds and sods u have lying around when the water is a bit took dirty to use for clothes again whereas u usually put off washing them in a normal machine as u have to put on a separate wash just for them.
Washed a pile of dusters. and also a few odd Tea towels that were hanging around. Oh and the 1 shirt that was too dark to go with the whites but too white to go with the darks lol.
Im Converted. All we have to do now is pester Hoover to start making them again. Or at least make a short production run ;-p

Hi Si.

Sounds like you have had a grand day twin tubbing!

'Or at least make a short production run ;-p'

Your statement got me thinking!
A 'New Wave' Hoovermatic would have been rather smart, though a shame that it couldnt have had pop in pop out dials.

Piccy below shows Rob (Aquarius1984), Mike (ChesterMike) and Alex (SuperElectronic) indulging in some twintubbing with mine and Rob's T5054.

Hey Paul. Great to hear from ya.
Yea i actually Emaild Hoover last week with my suggestion and had a rather curt Email back saying there was not enough demand and that there were no current plans to produce a twin tub.
I suggested they had a survey on their website as they maybe sup prised by how many people would like a new one.
Great pic of you guys. Be good to meet up with u at some point Do you guys get together every few mnths for a day of twin tub talk ?

Post# 533438 , Reply# 35   7/28/2011 at 13:52 (4,626 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

Unfortunately, the reality will be that I dont think any manufacturer selling machines in the UK would even consider producing a twin tub.

Though, judging by some of the prices that machines go for on ebay, there is call for them out there somewhere.

Can but dream of a New Wave version though, with a lovely sweep across on the front facia as well as the dial facia on top, plus some lovely neons glowing green.

I am sure you will meet up with us somewhere, sometime soon.

As Rob will confirm, I live in the dark ages and just stick to Youtube, e-mail and this forum. Though Rob tries to get me to do 'msn' and 'facebook', I have yet to take the plunge.

Well I've just asked on here if anyone has tried these new POLAR twin tubs. the jet stream or the crystal jet.
They look quite good as are bigger than some of them and the Crystal jet has a metal body.
Few reviews on some of the similar ones say that they are flimsy but most of those reviews are for a different make. also the agitator flat at the bttm of the wash tub looks quite interesting. although i don't think anything would have that excitement and power of a Hoovermatic when the paddle starts lol.
Well I'm on yahoo and Msn so if rob ever fancys adding me be my guest.

I used to have this colour of HMDL, currently have the last version of grey, T5090. I have never had an instruction book for a HMDL, and I always wondered how to get the flow of rinse water right into the spinner, and I noticed that the white plastic thingy round the hose is the flow indicator. How do I know if the flow is too much? I usually use a regular grey rubber hose on my taps, and as I have 1960's supataps in my kitchen, I have to turn the hose and tap at the same time, creating a very pressurised flow ( I live in a tower block were the water is pumped at pressure) Washing jeans, I find washing one pair at a time inside out for blue jeans, but sometimes with thin jeans you can wash two pairs at once, with a little extra wash water. That old HMDL on Ebay going for grabs here in Hull, I phoned the seller and he is hoping to reach £300!! So I hope you guys have some spare cash floating around! Oh, anyone have a spare HMDL pump handy that I could buy? Mine is on the blink.

Post# 533566 , Reply# 42   7/29/2011 at 02:45 (4,626 days old) by welshsi ()

Well the hose that comes with the hoovermatic just clips into the hole that says rinse in between the washer and the spinner. with the lid of the spinner open turn the tap on slowly until u get a reasonable stream of water onto the clothes. Note here if its hitting the opposite side of the drum and going out through the holes then you have it too fast. i guess its a rapid stream onto the clothes. i found it works quite well over the last couple of days.
That guys living in cuckoo land if he thinks he's gonna get 300 quid lol paid 50 quid for mine 2 days ago.
As for the pump you can pick up spares for the pump on ebay and on other sites.

Sounds and looks like the boundaries of vintage machine repairs have been pushed a bit further out, with the heavy duty tinkering of the 3224 Keymatic!

Really cannot wait for the thread to be started Mike, to see exactly what you have been upto.

you have to aspire to have a Servis....then earn it...LOl

Si, its a group keymatic, found by Gary (electron 1100) and was collected by John & me, it needed the bearings replaced and a full overhaul, so hence a mini mini meet to get it sorted ready for the unveiling....

Hass, yes we are getting stuff in order for the next meet that we hope you and Si can join us....

heres another addition that being checked out and spinning, a 1932 model...Ah Lils Wesher...as we say in Darlo....

Si, the square cabinet Hoovermatics tend to struggle with denim, more so than earlier machines. This is because the later HMs have the wash motor freely pivoting in order for the belt to adjust automatically, but the lack of fixed tension can cause the rollover to stall more easily with bulky items.

To get round this on my machine, I've increased tension on the belt by means of wedging a plastic ice cream tub between the heater sump and the wash motor. It's a bit of a bodge, but as long's the belt has a deflection in the middle of half of an inch or more, it shouldn't hurt the bearings - the ice cream tub is springy enough to stay in place without making the belt too tight.

Otherwise, it's a case of mixing each load so that jeans get washed with less bulky items like dark t shirts. And as far as really stiff jeans, you learn to stop buying them after a while Laughing Get well soon, by the way!

Mike, sounds like some exciting goings on, can't wait to see the thread and more pictures! Has Mathew found himself a Liberator at last? And is that the Savage off ebay?

Rob - nice to see some quadruple tubbing going on, the Deluxes look very smart side by side Smile

Hi Simon.
Aaah funny you say about that when i had the back of the machine and was doing a quick look over everything there was a piece of polystyrene wedged between the washer motor and tub helping to keep tension on the belt.
Amazing the little tips u learn on here.lol
Are you still using yours as your every day machine then.?
Si

Hey Si, sorry I couldn't get to message you earlier. I was in the garden all day with my Dad having some father and son time. I've been exploring the wonders of my IPad recently brought for my birthday. So been doing some photography work, taking pictures if my Dads mad garden, while he was chopping a tree down, lol.

Yeah dude it's all you can do while your ill, pain in the neck I know, but you'll be back on your feet in no time. Hope you enjoyed the movie and yes drinks lots of fluids!

@Mike excellent, hope we can make it. Look forward to it ;)

Hey Si, a chunk of polystyrene sound like it would work a lot better, I'll have to start keeping an eye out for some!

Yeah, the Hoovermatic is my regular washing machine, and has been for a couple of years now - another member here (electron1100) offered me an 80s automatic, but various factors have prevented me collecting it (sorry Gary, if you're reading this!).

Think mine led a hard life, so it's been a bit of a rolling restoration - new heater, pulsator and housing, spinner bearings, pump valve and filling/emptying hoses have all been fitted since I got it in 2007, I like to tell my partner that with all those new bits it should last another 37 years Laughing

Usually do two washes a week, with 3-6 loads in each wash. I tend to stick with the same wash water, working on the logic that back in the day folk would wear clothes for longer and not necessarily bathe daily, and so the water would have gotten dirtier sooner.

I've had Hotpoint and Servis twinnies and Ariston and Hoover single tubs since my 20s, but always wanted a Hoovermatic as they're the ones I remembered the most from childhood, and it had to be a deluxe so there'd be no faffing around with manual rinsing. I swear it has a soul - the only time my ex used it (when the auto in our flat broke down) the heater developed a leak to earth and tripped the plug in circuit breaker - he was able finish the washing without it, but turned the machine on and off at the plug in case it zapped him Laughing

Hey Si.
Sounds good. your machine is deffo looking good now though with all the love and running repairs.
Mine has tidied up quite well. and I'm planning to get it out for a wash later today.
So far I'm just looking at replacing the belts but thats more preventing a problem than it needing them but if they are the originals then they have been on for a long time.
I quite like the auto rinse. works very well and then theres the fact i can put another wash on as its doing the rinse so deffo saves time.
Something nice about the smell of hot soapy water in the house makes everything smell fresh.

Hi James.
Yea thanks for that. Just seen the advert may have a few more pics too.
Thanks for that.
Vacbear. Did u mean that empress doesn't have a heater? How can u tell? Is it the shape of the wash drum?

Well Have just finished another good wash. yet again did 4 loads in the hoovermatic. Put a load in the automatic too and sure enough I've filled. washed, emptied, wiped everything down and put away, and sure enough the auto is STILL going on one load lol.

That particular Empress does not have a heater, but they were available with heaters - if you check Lance's recent thread "Servis Mark Two Heater" (with Parnall, Servis Supertwin & Empress) you can see where the heater control is on his - on the centre front towards the door for wringer storage.

Polystyrene block

Hi Si and Si,

pleased to read your machines are going well. I understand what you mean simon about adding tension to the belt, but I always assumed the block of poly was incase the machine was turned on its back the motor wouldn't swing up and the belt come off, imagine the numbers of new machines delivered with disconnected pulsator belts otherwise. Thats only my thoughts, don't know this is the reason.

You make me want to get mine out, but have too much on at the moment, thankfully the electronic 1100 just carries on with the job.

Mathew

My mum had that exact same Electronic 1100, good machine. The idea with the belt tensioning, I noticed that the motor wobbles slightly, I think I might get hold of some polystyrene myself!

Post# 535471 , Reply# 86   8/7/2011 at 07:39 (4,616 days old) by 74simon ()

Mathew, was the polystyrene block an original fitting or an unofficial modification, do you know? I've had machines shed their pulsator belt when being moved on their back or front, not a problem for us tinkerers, but inconvenient for the original owners, so your theory also makes sense.

After I got my HMDL I also picked up a W7002, which was the last power wringer machine. It was also the last model with a fixed motor, otherwise the wringer belt would slip when dealing with bulky items, and the wash is much more torquey, three pairs of jeans are not problem, and it's also better at dealing with stalling, the wash bobs around until the load starts to turn again. Thinking about it, the W7002 out-turnovers my HMDL with the modification, tomorrow should be washday so I may put some styrene in before then.

Suds - if you try it, will you let us know how you get on?

Si - like Lance said in another thread, Empresses are very common compared to most vintage washers, so you can afford to be picky when looking for one - I suspect that with a bit of patience you could pick one up for under a tenner!  Like Al says, not all of them came with a heater, and some of the older ones might not have an emptying pump either - they just have a tap behind the wringer cupboard door, you can see it above the wringer in the 1947 advert below. So unless you can route a hose down a drain or outside, you'd be stuck emptying out gallons of water by bucket - no fun!

Hi 74simon
Well my machine was from new fitted with a small square block of polystyrene glued to underside of tank between motor. but weather that was just for transit and should have been removed when new i dont know.
