Hi everyone, my servis Mark two twin tub works perfectly after rebuilding it last year.
I use it weekly but am unsure about the heater.
Should it boil? It only has one setting on or off and although the water certainly gets extremely hot it just dosnt quite get to boiling point. My question is should it?
I have the original instructions and it dosnt mention boiling in there either.
Will post a photo of it sometime.
Thanks boys ( washers arnt for girls are they )
Lance

Does it cut out before reaching boiling point?

Heater

Hi Austin, thanks for your reply.
No , the heater dosnt cut out , I can hear it is on all the time.
As I said before it is almost at boiling point but never quite gets there, I would guess that it must be about 95 degrees so it's not far off.
Although I havnt used it for a long time , I seem to remember my old early 60s hoovermatic didn't boil , just got very very hot.

3 Beautiful Machines!

Hi Lance,

You have 3 fine machines. What else do you have?

RE Boiling: I think a washing machine can't sustain a constant boiling point due to the volume of water and a 2.5KW heater, once they goe past 60* to 80* the heater is less effecive and takes longer to reach that max temperature.

Correct me if I'm wrong, just a theory

James.

As your machine has no pressure switch try using less water and see it boils then.! You can always add cold water to top it up as will be to hot to wash with.
Worth a go to see if it will boil I do remember a relative had a mk2 Hoovermatic and it was below the pulsator with water but boiled a treat.

James, think you hit the nail on the head, and it would explain why Hoover told the user to only fill to the top of the activator, presumably to make it easier for the heater to get the temp up. On the rare occasions I've boiled in a Hoover, the water evaporates and sends up the odd bubble, but it's nothing like a kettle or saucepan - more like a gentle simmer. Makes me wonder how big the Burco Boilers used to be!

Lance, do you keep the lid up or down when boiling? I would have though that you'd have a better chance of a rolling boil with the lid down, if I remember my Home Economics lesson on pan lids correctly! But I suspect that at least some machines weren't designed with that in mind, as they already had mechanical wash action.

You can check the elements with a multimeter using ohm's law - set it to ohms and take a reading from its connectors - for a 240 volt machine, a 3kw element should read about 18 ohms, a 2.5kw about 22 ohms, and a 2kw about 28 ohms. Anything significantly higher would indicate the element is on its way out.

Hope we get to see more of your collection,  the three machines in the photo look stunning !

Just looked at our Supermatic and it has a 3KW element in it,

Paul has a video I think of it actually boiling - it does give a really rolling boil,

Not sure what Element wattage a Servis has but I daresay anything below 3kw wont allow that amount of water to boil nor will the 2.5kw Hoover element, as Simon says its just a gentle simmer.

Now what I alo wonder is that with the Supermatic the heater is under the agitator, my agitator has holes in it up the post, seems to me part of the boiling could be helped here by it almost being similar to a coffee percolator. Water boils in the confined space below the agi, rises and pours out the holes allowing water to circulate and heat.

Should the Servis perhaps aid this if it was to have a 3kw heater?

Rob...

What is the Hotpoint Spiraclean Agitator made out of? I often thought it would melt with that powerful heater underneath it. I have no Twin Tub now, just the Twosome but a Twinny is coming in two weeks, unknown of model or condition though.

P.S. I added you on Facebook!

James.

Washer

Thanks to all who have commented, certainly the heater gets things to a gentle simmer BUT with less water I can get a good boil going , just didn't think of trying that before.
I don't know how many watts the heaters are but the Empress in the photo boils great , the washer on the left is as Keith said a Parnall which works perfectly but dosnt have a heater.
I do have a Parnall in very bad condition but it does have a heater so I am considering making one heating washer from two machines but to be honest it seems such a shame to wreck a perfectly good washer just for the sake of a heater.
Keith, thanks for your comments, really would like the drawings for assembling the spinner on my Rolls twin tub , I got the parts from qualtex as you suggested but didn't like to bother you for the drawings but if you could.......... Thanx.
Supermatic James , not sure if its you who has put a friend request on facebook , are you called Stubbs?
Once again thanks for your comments.
Lance

Just wondered if you had lived elsewhere in town,

Mind Victoria Ave has changed loads since they built a Morrisons and a whole new Bingo hall bowling alley and cinema.

On the whole though Crewe is still a dump! lol

Hi Lance...

It must have slipped my memory, if you can mail me your address i will bring the manual into work and get them posted off to you, scanned copies are not great of this manual as the drawings are not very dark.

What did you get from Qualtex ? Rubber mounts..?

I think the Empress has a 3kw heater from memory. I didn't think it had a heater, it would have been a EW50H if it did, but looking good regardless, not sure i would bust it just to put a heater in.

Hi lance, great line up of machines to cover all areas of laundry, is this the Servis from Blackpool or the Blue one repainted??

Still searching for spare spin boots, though mathew came up with a great suggestion of using an inflatable tyre inner tube, which could look like its would work..

A few of us are sorting out machines for parts so hopefully we can look at those spin can boot replacements...

How do you rate the Parnall over the Empress??

Hi Mike,

That spin can boot is that the black cowl around the top of the outer spin can ?

Lance...regarding your Parnall, does it still empty via the side pipe without any leaking..? the one i had because it was a split tube which could be raised up, the rubber tube connector had perished, and use to wash the floor instead of emptying into the sink..lol

I will hopefully get those scans off to you early next week, I am not at home at the weekend.
Cheers
Keith

washers

Hi Mike and keith,
Mike , thats actually both the washers you mentioned, the blue and white one sprayed cream and an origional cream top from the Blackpool washer , thankfully a great match in paint, the old blue and white top was fine but i prefered cream as it has a mnore vintage look.
When we took the cream one to bits it would appear that it was made slightly differently and the spin can had never had a rubber seal on it , so we used the spin can from that one and it works perfectly with no leaking etc although as the rubber hose on the autorinse was very badly corroded on both i cant use that function so have never tried the spinner with a constant flow of water going in.
The Parnall was almost my dream washer , i say almost as i would still prefer one with a heater and chrome wringer plates.
It works perfectly and thankfully the rubber seal on the out let pipe is good so no problems with emptying it.
Very difficult to compare it with the Empress, i think if i could only keep one and i had the Parnall i really want then it would be the Parnall, partly because it reminds me of my youth ( some thing which is a long way behind me ) and also it washes great , the wringer is slightly faster and i just like the look of it.
Anybody know who bought the Brand new Hoover single tub off ebay last week?
Was it you Mike?
Cheers boys
Lance

Hi Lance.

Superb set of machines that you have there and love the kitchen!

When you have a moment, could you post some more pics of your collection - in particular the Parnall? Never seen one in the flesh and great that there is such a fine specimin in presrvation.

Paul

Parnall

Hi Paul,
Will do some photos next week and post them on here.
That is one of two parnalls that i have , the other is the model with heater but the chrome wringer plates are missing , the pump leaks slightly and the agitator is cracked.
Still it dosnt eat anything so its sitting in the garage.
I think Derby is about 2 hours away from me but if you ever want to come and play with the Parnall just say the word.
Glad you like the kitchen , i actually wanted a 1940s/50s style kitchen but was sensible enough to realise that if ever i want to sell the house not many people want a pot sink and a tin draining board, the Belfast sink is my second sink in 2 years , i had the old one taken out which i origonaly had put in , and this one put in just because it was better for wringer washers! Honestly!
Thankfully i have an understanding partner, well so far any way.
Cheers
Lance

Morning Lance,

It would be good to see some pics, the machine i had was the one you want, but never seen the re-styled machine. I think I may still have the chrome wringer guards, let me see and i will let you know.

Like you I would have loved to have had a 50's kitchen, but thought better of it.

Keith
