I also converted a 1958 pink MT HOH gas dryer to electric ignition. I used the valve assembly from a MT big load dryer but others may also be adaptable. You need to be fairly competent to attempt this type of change to be sure that it is done in a safe way. The orifice from a newer burner needs to be changed to a 18,000 BTU for the HOH dryer as most newer dryers fire at 22,000 BTUs and the design of the HOH dryers where the gas burner[ and for that matter the electric models ]is placed one needs to be very careful with this dryer. MT had a lot of these dryers go up in flames in thier day both gas and electric, it was one of many reasons that the design was dropped. MT was working in ernest on its replacement by 1970 and brought out the new dryer in 1973 for coin op models to field test the new dryer design.
But all that said I do think it is a good idea to make this change if you can and if you are trying to use this dryer as a daily driver. You not only get rid of the expensive to run constant burning pilot and the damage caused by the moisture that burning gas causes to the inside of the dryer. You also gain the added safety of having a redundant [ dual ] gas valve which almost eliminates the chance that the flame keep burning when electric power is removed from the burner assembly. |
