As you all know, I have been a member for a few years no, but I have never put up any pics of my machines...Well, I only have the one machine at the moment, and I finally found my phone lead to get the damn things up! Hoovermatic Deluxe T5090, needs a new pump at the moment, that died on me a few months ago. Good shape overall, no rust, although the wash deck is VERY faded. Too many boil washes (my ex b/f was a chef, and I used to make sure his whites where spotless).

Royal crest. The plstic ribs that are missing off the spinner lid is the result of the spinner mat slipping out during full spin.

With original fill pipe, and a generic bell ended fill pipe to fit my nightmare 1960's supataps. Oh yes, the washer is in my bedroom at the moment as I have been moving things around my flat, nightmare!!

I don't think you can see the serial number, but it is 90800064.

Very faded wash deck. The glue even melted during its life time, and it is now stuck down with silicone sealant. Only stuff which will hold it! oh, and that black fluffy thing in the picture is my cat, having a good nosey. When I'm washing she sits in the piles of clothes on the floor watching me do my weekly wash!

Only one machine?

Frankly, as long as it serves you well and you love it, there's no shame in having just the one! And that Hoovermatic looks well loved!

I'd never got to use a twin tub until earlier in the year - and I popped my twinny cherry with a Hoovermatic. Loved the interaction with the wash process and being able to plunge my clothes into deep susdy water. Can't say I'm quite so sold on the spin rinsing, especially not going from hot to cold, cold water; not even sure if the auto rinse is quite the boon it appears.

Here I am on my maiden voyage...regular viewers will no doubt recognise the surroundings!

Alex

Lol!!!!

Lol @ "popped your twin tub cherry".... I am only a few months older than you, but I popped my twin tub cherry when I was about 12-13 with my nans Colston Coronette, then through a few of my mums ancient Hoovermatic she had over the years, she always bought second hand ones. Friends of mine had Servis (one of them was the very rare Lasertwin) and Hotpoint. I have used them all! Really should get a pump for my machine, as washing in my lodgers Meile auto is driving me insane, I mean 1 hr 45 mins for a 60c!!! I could have torn through a weeks wash in that time. I do know what you mean with the auto rinse in the later Hoovermatics (with the spinner latch) they tend not to get right to the bottom of the load, so when I do use the auto rinse, I do two auto rinses, then put the load back in "upside down" if you know what I mean, two more rinses usually does the trick. Otherwise I do three manual rinses by having the water running into the spin can while dropping the clothes in the flow of water, although I have filled the outer spin can up a bit too much a few time, yup, my motor was crying for mercy! When you say surroundings....Where is that? Love the flip flops by the way! Lol! My machine ain't done too bad, it has been to London and back with me (lived in Wood Green for 10 years) and been banged about in the back of a removal van a few times....... My dream washer would be the wash action of the Hoovermatic, probably with a bigger tub, and the spin side of the Servis (NOT the 111, horrid machine), Hotpoint spinners are too slow in my mind. Soon as I get my machine back in action, I will post a few vids, of how we do the washing northern style....ie cigarette dangling from mouth, in jim jams while supping a giant mug of tea with some power ballads playing the background getting drowned out by the spinner screaming it's tits off!! Lol.

Glad you're amused!

Yes, definitely not convinced that the autorinse feature would give wholly satisfactory results; I was advised to squish and move the clothes around in the water stream a bit whilst it filled between spins. That cold water was not easy on the hands! I prefered the final rinse using a bowl to pour softener water over - felt better able to saturate the load evenly. I'd always thought the idea was to completely fill the spinner with water but not so, it seems! Plus it would take an awful lot of water - didn't realise the spin tubs were so large.

The surroundings are those of the Cheshire set: Rob (Aquarius1984) and (Matchbox)Paul had me up one weekend in February. With any luck I'll get chance to repeat the experience with a different twinny...once I've acrued sufficient good behaviour credits; my own collection is a non-starter in my current abode.

At least with your lodger's Miele you can launder in high quality style, even if it does take its sweet time to get through a hot wash. Mind you, I can't help but think the Hoovermatic goes a little too far the other way; I suspect washday relies upon thorough pre treating/soaking of anything mucky to deliver top class results. And fishing around in scalding water doesn't much appeal either!

Thanks for appreciating the flip flops; don't think they're viewed as entirely appropriate footwear for a wash-in, especially if heavy equipment is being moved about. On the other hand, though, I daresay many a housewife made do with her carpet slippers; flip flops are merely an homage to the style!

Wood Green, eh? Handy for shopping and Ally Pally I suppose! Other end of town to me in downtown New Cross.

Smoking indoors? Power balads? Is it 1985? How delightfully retro!

Tongue out

Alex

Sudsreturn, somehow I see you more as a workboot kind of guy, rather than flip flops. (or I can hope)

Post# 538035 , Reply# 15   8/19/2011 at 07:53 (4,605 days old) by sudsreturn ()

Cuffs? Workboots? Oy vey, I have to keep up some sort of style! Alex, I wouldn't say the Meile is that great on washing. Use brand powder, even though I bawk at paying the price, stains have to be pre-treated, and to seperate loads into colours/fabrics ends up me having about five hours worth of washing. Lodger is terrible, he shoves EVERYTHING in together, although one load will be dark coloured and black and one load whites and light coloureds, but he does tend to ram in jeans with acrylic jumpers, grafted black socks with his horrid dark bath puff... I mean, sometimes I unload one of his washes and work trousers have one leg inside out and one leg the right way. Ugh!! With the twinny, any really stained whites I tend to put into cold or warm water with detergent (even cheapo powder works wonders) and leave it all to soak while the water is getting hot, leaving me to do some cleaning or pop to the shops. Not once have I had a bad result. Well, London wise, I have lived a few places, Pimlico, North Ken, but mainly north London, Stamford Hill, and Wood Green/Turnpike Lane. Not keen on south London. One of these days I will have to attend one of the UK "Wash-ins"... would be a laugh. Looked at some of your posts and I notice you would love to get your hands on a Hottie toploader... Me too!!!! American top loaders are too wide to fit in the space in my kitchen units, and its really a twin tub but automatic, if you see what I mean, although I would love to put in an English Electric agitator (which fit in the Hotpoint twin tubs) to give a good roll over, not keen on the spiralator agi. There was a vid on Youtube of a Hotpoint twin tub with an EE agitator init, can't remember who posted it. Ah well, soon I should have some vids up myself, and I need to get some vids done of the fantastic REX launderette washers that are in every launderette here in Hull. Great spin-drain, and super sloshy washing action, no messing with distribution before the spin either. Work time, laters!!!

Post# 538151 , Reply# 16   8/19/2011 at 17:25 (4,604 days old) by SuperElectronic (London, UK)

5 hours' washing? Well, there are worse ways to spend time with your feet up or otherwise! As a singleton, though, a twin tub does make great sense in terms of ploughing through several small loads, giving you an empty basket every week instead of forever waiting for a suitable load to amass!

Funny about the lodger - why spend on a good machine if you're not going to use it well? So often I've been galled by people having really good machines whilst having no clue about good washday practice. Meanwhile, I've usually been saddled with something lame (particularly during the Proline years, but we'll draw a veil over that period). One of my housemates is similarly careless with his laundry prep and prone to an excessive use of hot water, e.g. the acrylic knitwear was sloshing around at 60*C; he seems to take the view that he can always iron out the creases. Things have improved since I brough the Hotpoint home, admittedly...I've even seen the machine running the wool cycle with his stuff in (making me wonder if it was deliberate or a mistake).

I would indeed very much love a Hotpoint Top Loader. Maybe one day, eh... Know what you mean about the Spiraclean agitator and rollover - there isn't any - just a bit of up and down! I couldn't understand why, when I used launderette top loaders (a good 12-13 years ago now), clothes I'd put at the bottom worked their way to the top. I now realise that's how it's supposed to happen! To be fair, the HPTL wash bowl isn't altogether huge when compared to US machines.

Sounds as though you got about a bit, London living-wise! I'm guessing Hull must be a change of pace...although, when you get down to it, London's just another place to live most of the time, albeit with a backdrop of famous landmarks and a more widespread reliance on public transport.

Have you planned how to film the launderette machines without attracting odd looks or will you be brazen about it?

Til later...

HI suds

HI there, I have a Hoover from the 1970's in harvest gold. lol that is old isn't it? It still works well and love to wash in it. I have noticed that not many from the US reply here so I thought I would.
I did find out though, the hard way, that you have to remember to take it easy and not forget to put the discharge hose into the sink or you have water all over the kitchen floor, and fast too!
What is the best UK detergent and how would I go about getting some?
I was in London a few years back but didn't have to do laundry. Happy washing suds. Gary

Alex,

Nothing wrong with flip-flops. I just about live in them from the time school ends until it begins again! Gardening, moving heavy bits 'round the yard, entertaining, marketing......

Long live the freedom!

Abco, my discharge hose is permanently in the sink, only goes over the wash tub once every load, I have my ways lol. I start feeding the next load in as I am spinning out the first loads suds, unlike on alot of the vids on Youtube were people prat about doing suds return, stopping the spinner and then starting to rinse. I do it a much quicker way. I will do some vids soon.

Well, even though I'm a singleton myself, I do wash for three of us, which includes my work uniforms, lodgers and his b/f's uniforms, all bedding (two double beds) four pairs of bath towels, seven dish cloths and tea towels, regular clothes, at least five pair of jeans, lots of sweaters, two bath mats, wooly jumpers, three white dressing gowns, LOADS of underwear (dark and light)..... I can tear through it in an hour, easy.

The launderette thing, my local launderette is non manned in the evening, no problem there really. London, well I had to come back to Hull recently because of family probs n'stuff, but I will probably end up back in London at some point. Often down there to see friends etc, and to pick up carbolic soap lol! Can't get it here! Love the new profile pic btw, very handsome (blush). Abco, British detergent should be available online. There are two main types in the powder version, which in my book is THE only thing to use... I don't schlep around with liquids that need nets, bags, tablets, all that shite... Powder is usually with "automatic" in the name, which is low sudsing as Uk machines are usually front loaders. Usually come in biological (can remove stains at low temps) or non bio (for people with delicate skin). The other type has "hand wash and twin tub" in the name, and not many brands do it much these days. This is high suds, and usefull for hand washing, twin tubs and agitator top loaders. I don't use this detergent as the Hoovermatic tends to turn your kitchen into the Poisiden Adventure (I know I spelled that wrong lol) I use Daz, which is a regular biological powder, cheapest brand powder, great smell and does the job. Ariel is my fave, but it is VERY expensive. Don't like Persil automatic, no suds at all!! Even some of the store brands are good, Asda (Walmart), Tesco, Morrisons all do their own detergent. 1970's machine old? I was born in the 70's!! Most of the machines I have had were from the late 60's/early 70's, some belonging now to my friends, and still going strong. My machine is from 1989/1990 I think, the last model Hoover made. Perc, flip flop were invented by G-d himself!! Lol.

Washing for three?

That sounds like a...erm...cozy state of affairs. No wonder you want to get through it at speed! I don't envy trying to get it dry all at once...with or without that drying cupboard!

UK washing powder - I'd agree with the summary above. Ariel (by P&G) and Persil (by Unilever) are the top brands; pick Ariel for sudsy washes...not 100% sure about Persil - it was very low sudsing at one point. Both are pricey but over here the supermarkets have offers just about every other month these days; a bit of shopping around and one can wash with premium brands all year round without breaking the bank! I've no idea, however, one would go about getting packets shipped to the US.

I'd say there is an etiquette to flip-flops: fine for around the house and garden, popping to the local shops or any warm holiday location. Not suitable for a day in the urban jungle (feet get too dirty).

Thanks for the compliment on the profile pic, Suds; did wonder if I looked a bit too moody! Your new one's not bad either... Wink

Yup, washing for three! And to think of my poor mother washing for four, specially when me and my bro where small, and he was still in terry nappies!!! Your right about the soap powder, although I do miss some of the old brands that have gone. Tide is available now and then, in those Asian run "bits and bobs" shops on the high streets in London. I do like Fairy Snow, but again, too sudzy for a Hoovermatic. Fairy auto is ok though. I do like the smell of Fairy softner too, even though I hardly use it, as I dry most things in the dryer to keep things soft. I use the drying cupboard for shirts. Like to have my underwear in the dryer, as I don't want baggy Calvin Klein undies lol! Yeah Fairy is one of the original "washing fragranced" soap poweders left, I have always wished Dettol would do their own powder, as once a month I add Dettol to the last rinse, smells lovely!! Oh, thanks for the pic comment, I like to keep changing it, otherwise it gets boring. And no, you don't look moody in the slightest, look quite tidy actually! Lol.

Washing powder

I only ever use Persil but always remember my mother using fairy snow, can you still get it ?
I have never seen it.
Suds return you made me laugh about the dettol, when we were kids my aunty used to put it in our bath water when we stayed with her , to this day if I have a bath ( it's usually a shower ) I still put detail in it , love that smell.
why would you leave Hull for London , you've got Prinny quay ( full of chavs ) Fuel ( full of gay chavs )
Yep , guess you're right , London sounds good... Although Hull Truck is definitely a national treasure.
Let me know about fairy snow, I will definitely buy some if I can get it.

Top loading hotpoint

Yes me again, 7.45 Sunday morning , can't sleep, just read comments again,
Sounds to me like spiracle and suds need to meet up sometime!!!!!
I'm sure suds would be a real good meshugener baleboste.
Spiracle , why don't you have a hotpoint top loader ? Because you can't get one , or don't have room ? I know where there is one , that's why I ask.

Post# 538460 , Reply# 27   8/21/2011 at 06:48 (4,603 days old) by SuperElectronic (London, UK)
Spiracle?

Lance, if you mean me then you'd best knock a couple more coffees back/put the glasses on! Though it's a catchy new name...I sound like a cartoon character!

Why don't I have a Hotpoint Top Loader? Well, the high cost of London living combined with my modest wage has so far precluded me from (a) living on my own and (b) having a kitchen that would accommodate one. As you can see from the pic below, there will be no cutting holes in the worktop here...especially as a mere tenant! My recently revived Hotpoint WM12 is all the compromise I can have for now. Storing a TL in the house is 95% out of the question: it would look a tad odd in the bedroom and the only other space is occupied by the Proline washer I have to keep on blocks because it belongs to the landlords.

As to your other cryptic suggestions, well...I can't possibly think what you mean! Pure as Fairy Snow, me...

You know Yiddish and about Hull??

Lol@Lance! Although I am a friend of Dorothy, I don't go into Fuel, cannot stand the skinny hairless 0's throwback queens that go in there, all dressed the same, in carrot trouseres and espadrilles (look like mental patient shoes to me). I left Hull in 2000 to go to Uni, and to make a new life, two boyfriends, some well paid jobs later... I'm back in Hull, why I don't know, but it had improved since I left in 2000. And, apart from me saying the odd "oy vey".... how did you know I was Jewish? Lol, you been looking at my Facebook page? Spiracle? Why do you call SuperElectronic that? Lol, sounds like some kind of flying saucer to me! And yes, next time I am in London, I think a coffee would be a nice idea! About the top loader thing, SuperElectronic is right, alot of private landlords are very funny about kitchen units. Luckily, I am council, and our block has had its "decent homes" kitchen installed. The washer space can take a large auto, or a Hotpoint toploader.

Fairy Snow.

Fairy Snow is still available in many chain supermarkets, and some independants. I know Tesco and Asda don't do it, but I think Waitrose does, or Morrisons. Next time I see some, I can post you a box or two if you like Lance. And the Dettol thing, I only do tha because my mum used to put Lysol (the old stuff in the glass rubbed bottle from the chemist) in the last rinse, smells more "hospital" than Dettol. Not available in the UK no more, although available online from the US as Lysol Original Concentrate.

It wasn't just the odd oy vey or the schlep , and no I havnt looked at your facebook page , the star of David on your bedroom cabinet confirmed it.
I know hull very well , I live in Driffield.
Sorry I call him spiraclean, god knows where that came from.
As for Yiddish , well I'm a gentile with good Jewish friends.
So you will have coffee together already, then you will be a Sadie and I can dance at your wedding.
I'm getting to be a regular Yenta.

I often go to Waitrose in Hull , the one near Lidl ( and I believe the Synagogue) so I will look out for it there.
Definitely not Morrisons, always Daz there.
But in the meantime if you see some then yes please, pick up a couple of packets for me , I can nip over to Hull and collect , I usually go there every couple of weeks.
And thanks for the offer, very kind of you.

I go to Waitrose here, it's the only place were I can get kosher food, even though there is't much of a choice nowadays, there are the traditional things. I usually buy trief beef from Tesco and kasher it at home to get rid of the blood, kosher meat is expensive. Leeds is the best place to go. When I lived in London I kept a 100% kosher kitchen, as it was all cheaper there, a much larger community. Community has shrank here, I remember when there was a kosher baker, kosher fish and chip shop, a butchers... There are a few Jewish owned places still around, one of which being Sellwoods, the second hand appliance dealer on Hessle Rd. Mainly though, it's the solicitors and accountants and a few tailors. I never been to Driff, but i did work for Dewhirst in Hull which did have a factory in Driff.

You get me some fairy snow and I will make you some chopped and fried.
Deal?
Old Mrs. Dewhirst was one of my customers but died last year so unfortunately the company has now gone although I suspect it had been struggling for a while.
Oh and just for the record I have never been in Fuel but ended up one night in Frankies vauxhall tavern.
Loved it !

Vauxhall was one of my haunts when I lived that end of town, and the old Sillhouette club. Dewhirst, the Dewhirst I worked for was the clothing factories, I think the one in Driff sent all its work to China back in 1997, same happened with the Hull factory, only a few Dewhirst factories left in the UK now. Don't worry about popping to Hull, i will post some Fairy Snow to ya, I work alot so I am very rarely able to socialise. Oh, sometimes Home Bargains get Tide washing powder in now and then, in the original lemon scent. I have been looking around for the old Allbrite Blue, but I think it was dicontinued in the 80's, used to love that powder. Is Surf twin tub still available?

Thanks for the offer of getting the fairy snow , if you manage it then please let me know and I will let you have my address and of course the money to cover.
I don't think I have seen surf twin tub for years, square deal surf I seem to remember.
I have several packets , still with contents, of omo, fairy snow etc but so far have resisted the urge to open them, they are all vintage as in pounds and ounces not grams .
What do you work at , just curious.
Thanks again
Lance
