Hi all, thought I would update you on the pump trouble just in case any of you get a similar problem.
Very difficult to describe but basically once the pump is in place a screw is tightened against it to hold it in place and adjust it's position. This screw also by pressure alone holds the cover on the pump so my struggle to open the pump was in vain , infact it only needed priseing open. The impeller had simply worn away it's grip on the central metal rod.
It's now fixed and I will put it back on the machine later.
Thanks to all who offered advice.
If anyone wants a photo let me know and I will post one.

Glad to hear that it was a simple solution after all, but then those old machines were built like tanks. Look forward to seeing some more pictures - from the video posted in the other thread it looks like a terriffic wash action
