I was fortunate to be able to save this old one from the crusher I have to admit it has fought me well in its repair etc but I won and here she is ... I have christened her Sybil for her late start in life and as another AW member called lance put it because she was "Faulty" !!

I bought a pair of new spinner belts today and now its as quiet as can be seems to get up to speed better too will see how they hold out this weekend when another test wash is done.

Glad you managed to save another classic Austin, these machines are so sturdy they just keep rollin, the gaffer tape sure does the perfect job around those top seals, also use it when the pipes start to fray and crack....

Have you any pics of the spin bearing change, they would be great to see, only ever swapped a complete can , not had to do a bearing change on any of mine although the yellow one needs it!!

Heres a link to the Servis Auto-Wash, the MK2 Model 29...

Please don't shout at me but I had done it by the time I thought about the camera. I was going to make a video but the weather was crap and I was in the shed so sorry no pics. However should anyone wish to pick my brains over the process I would be more than happy to help.

Lancethecook has one of these machines. A dream to use, lovely roll over in the wash. One of the best Servis ever made. Worst machines were the 110, 111 and 115 Lasertwin. Urgh.

Hi Andy, why do you say that?? have you had a different experience with these models?? The MK2 was the most solid machine ever produced, , solid enamel top and heavy cast base!!the later models all had thinner cabinets and painted washdecks before the stainless steel versions

Austin, will let you off...LOl, thats the trouble when you are doing stuff yoursel, its always good to have a me or Paul about who take too many pics for evidence...actually it proves invaluable when re-assembling as you can find out how bits connect if you havnt made a diagram, aka said Hoover Keymatic - one wire makes all the difference!!

I love the symbols on the switches, as a kid I always thought the heater looked like a christmas tree and the spinner a tea cup on a merrigoround!!

I like all the three dial machines, it was just the late models I didn't like using, extremely noisy, with a an indipendant pump on the spin. Urgh. Love Lance's Mk2!

Hi Austin.

Glad that the MkII /Mk29 is coming good gradually.

The Mk29 was the machine that I first experienced twin tub washing with, as a nipper. Mr & Mrs Speak lived at number 12 and owned one of these machines.

Monday was washday and whenever school was out, I would march 4 doors up and go lend a hand.
I used to have to drag it out from under the stairs to the sink, Mrs Speak would load up and I turned it on.
It had a dicky ticker though and we would have to bang the dial to get the timer working. Ahhhh memories.

I bought the 1962 brochure recently and, as this is a suitable thread, here it is...

What Do You Have??

chestermikeuk's profile picture
You have the MKII (2) Model 30, this was Servis`s best selling washing machine of the day!!! it was produced in White, or Cream and also one with the "ServisAire" gas burner so it "Washed With Electric & Boiled By Gas"....these where the most solid of twintubs, solid metal frame base, with thick panel sides & an enamel top!! It was also the model that featured the "TwinLine Hose" the famous Servis Two Hoses In One!!

Mum had hers from 1963 until 1978 and it washed for us family of 6 at least three times a week, Mon,Wed,Fri & poss Sat morning as well... thats a lot of cycles!!!

I can't imagine how

A gas burner could work under that tub but obviously it did.
Do you have one mike?
I seem to remember my grandma lighting the gas under her electric washing machine.
It must have been the early 70s. I don't remember what machine it was but I certainly remember it was only an old round pin 5 amp plug in the kitchen so presumably it wasn't strong enough to supply a washer heater.
I am incredibly proud to have a servis twin tub even if it is two machines made into one.
It really is a very solid old bird and you can just feel the quality when you use her.
I used my hoovermatic yesterday , decided to boil my works aprons, believe me 8 pairs of apron strings and a hoovermatic are not a good combination!

I didn't realise

That such an automated twin tub was made by servis , but as you know I'm very anti automatic , still it is very nice to see such a great machine.
You certainly have a fine collection.
Did any of the members buy the flatly single tub on eBay a couple of years ago?
I would love to know what happened to it.

Controls, the difference with this model is the linked heater washtimer auto programmes, also the middle knob is a masterswitch , you have to pull it out to start the machine.

three lights are: LHS - mains on, Middle - heater on, RHS - indicates water too hot for desired wash programme

Sounds very similar

To the hoovermatic which started to wash when a certain temperature was reached.
I tend to go by the old method, if it too hot to put my hands in , it's hot enough to wash in!

See the panel on the LHS which you connect the gas pipe to, using a switch rather like on the gas pokers, snap it in and pull the lever down to to engage & lock the fitting!!

This is the revamped machine from1971 with the new sleeker look, the controls are now located on the top right of console, this model still had the original washtub with Hi-Zone Wash Action, the panels are a lot thinner & the washdeck is metal with a painted finish...the spinner was a new designunique to this model, phase 1 was a wider shallower spincan with holes all over..., phase two was a large pearshaped spincan with a row of holes near the base, these only existed on this model!!!

Hello Mike if what you say is right and I am sure you are then someone must have changed the original spinner on Sybil as she has the pear shaped drum with 2 rows of holes so far up I have never seen it before.
I know my mums MK1 had a solid drum with slots at the top only my MK3 I had "and like a twat gave away" was also solid with a row of holes near the top maybe the ones I had were friday washers ????

The controls now offer us, wash timer with a position at twenty five to for the electric pump, and the spinner offers us spin and pump, which means in this position and the lid open you can have the pump on for overflow rinsing etc...also you can drain all the water out of the spinner before starting to spin - less wear & tear on the motor & drive

That MK3 in the last post was my Grandmothers model when I was growing up. Loved using it, i remember the gentle ticking of the wash timer, washing the machine eat the sheets when you dipped one end in the wash. I also remember running like hell in the early years whenever grandma put the spinner on, wasn't too fond of the noise it made on start up lol.

I just had a thought, that machine was shoved in grandmas shed a back in about 1997 because it needed a new spinner motor. I don't remember it being moved while I was living in England. I'm wondering if its still there, that would be awesome to see again. Chances are my uncle will have shifted everything out of the shed but then again he might not have...Will have to see when i am there in November :-)

I didn't know the two knob machines were from as early as 1982. My mum at one point had the 111, never really liked the two knob machines, as you say, you can't have the wash pump running while washing. But the inner lid was a pain, alot of people took it off. What model number was the rare Lasertwin? My mate had that one, can't remember if it was two or three knob.

Nowthen....

Before the purists burn their fingers typing, the 111 was the last Mainstream Servis Supertwin Model produced, there was another model made as an exclusive for Comet called the Lasertwin, it had a grey fascia and console, and didnt have a rinse facility, or lint filter, it used the last remnants of spares available before production was stopped...

So there we are 25yrs of Supertwins...funny, in my mind it seems to have been a lot longer!!!

Hi Lance, I dont have a gas burner model of any Servis unfortunately, my Aunt had one in cream and I was fascinated seeing the gas pipe connected to it!!! the AutoWash is a linked heater timer like the Hoover with just three temperatures and wash times, just select by fabric, those auto rinse hoses do get brittle and burst open under mains pressure, I have tried coating them in silicone sealant and duct tape , tends to work if you are gentle with the flow!!!

Hi Austin, it is possible that yours has had a spin can assembly just completely swapped out, as we can see from your pick its an all in one assembly!!the MK1 & 2 series would have been the solid cans with the holes at the top under the rim, this was the only one you could do overflow rinsing with, the MK3 model 42 was the only different one with all holes in the first, then all subsequent models wher vitreous enamel, which I was gobsmacked at when I first saw them as I thought the first models where perfect in every way!! Can you post a pic of the different one??

Hi Andy, yes I agree about the 3 dial models are best, get that pump going I say, my favourite modern twinny would have to be the 108, fully loaded...did you get to use your mates Lasertwin?? dont have any pics of that, remember seeing it in Comet and sniffing at it...LOl, just looks weird in a light colour!!

Oh Matty, would be great if you found it still in the shed , not to worry though we have a set of twinnys for you to use when you are here!! Not long now!!deffo book out the weekend of the 18th, youll be in Stafford!!!

Hi Guys....
Great thread on Servis Twin tub washers !!

Paul, I was having a look at your timeline for early servis machines, I have just reviewed the service manual i have a a few points to fill in the gaps..
> Rinspin MK21 & MK34 replaced by the MK37
> MK22 toploader had "Roll-a-Dial" controls and the MK38 had the flat controls
> Servisaire Models were MK46 & MK54
> I will provide more info when i can work out how this manual works, very complicated all over the place..lol

Recently found out that the MK38 top loader had the "New Blue Agi" as well, it must have been towards the end of production, just before the MK41 was launched.

Keith

Hi Mike.

Lovely photos of the collection.

Know what you mean about the 108 - somehow the most familiar pure Servis looking machine, with the deep dark chocolate brown facia.
V. smart.

All this twin tub talk made me check the images for Servis Supertwin on Google images. The results threw up this nice piccy of housewife with her Mk29 Autowash with, what one presumes is meant to be, the cast-off Model A.

Hi Keith.

Honestly, any help with filling in the gaps would be VERY gratefully received!

So many Mk numbers and yet soooo many gaps - one assumes that there was a machine for every Mk number?
Where the hell are they all?

Thanks for the extra information and have added it to the table.
The Servisaire models that you mention - I would presume that these are the later MkIII Supertwin bodyshell versions, rather than the MkII style?

Getting all Servis'sy :-)

Below is everything remotely tubby...

May as well post the front loader info too

Here is the other half of the spreadsheet, showing the front loaders upto the the end of the slimline range.

Front loader wise there are some glaring omissions and mysteries, mainly centring on the Mk318, 321, 322, 602 Quartz and the final series of slimlines Mk6009, 6013 and 6015.
Any information on these models, from anyone at all, would be superb as there appears to be zero information about them anywhere - no brochures, no catalogue photos, no servicing info - nothing.
Rather weird, as the 318, 321, 322 and 602 were the core range of machines from around 1983/84 and yet no info have I ever found.

Heres hoping someone can offer some hints as to what they were.

Fingers crossed.
Paul
p.s the names/titles against coloured backgrounds are literally as they appeared on the machine, even down to upper and lower case.
Those names in red are, in some cases, unconfirmed as the name or are merely unconfirmed as to how they appeared on the facia.

some great machines

there Mike, interesting to see the information about the auto wash supertwin too.

Well this is my only servis machine, pictured during a storage move, which my brother Gareth helped with, he is into art history, so knows how to handle national treasures!

I haven't used it yet as it went straight into storage after collection some years ago, this thread has given me the nudge to try it out, it `should' be ok as it was refurbished by the previous owner before I bought it. I will let you know.

Hey Mike,

Great thread, and the pics you have posted are fab !! Servis-O-Matic. I did find out something new the other day, I had a few hours to kill while i was going from meeting to meeting in town (london) so thought i would pop along to the british Library, I knew they had a good stash of Good Housekeeping Magazines, and unfortunately, the GHI wont let members of the public go and visit their library anymore like they use to, which was great.

While i was flicking through a bound copy of magazines from 1967 (i think) there was a report on half-a-dozen automatics, they tested the Servis MK38, and quoted "the agitator can be removed to give a gentle wash for delicate things" I can only think this must have been the new blue agi which appeared in the MK41. I always thought the MK22 & MK38 had the old style hi-zone four vane black agi, maybe they changed agi's mid-production inlight of the new machine coming out.

Hi Keith, yes thats a surprise as the twinny agi was what 1970, but they must have been testing them out earlier,

Interesting what you can find out, have you had any luck with filling in the info on the spreadsheets for Paul??

Turns out Al / vacbear was also after it ! Told him if he had said I would have stopped bidding against him after all we are nearly family :)
We as in us aw.org washer folk especially those of us that actually know each other could do with some form of alert so we don't bid against each other thus saving ourselves some cash.
Any ideas anyone ?

Austin

What a fabulous thread guys! Servis made some great machines and are a superb part of our UK washing machine heritage.
Anyone know of a Servis Quartz Multivent 2700/01 that may be for sale?
Let me know!

Chris
