First Kitchen Aid Dishwasher. A beauty! This popped up on Craigslist last week, emailed the owner and asked if it was still available. The response Hi Jon.  The dishwasher is actually still installed in our kitchen, but we could have it removed by the weekend if you are serious about the dishwasher and coming to buy it.  When on Saturday would you be here?  Thanks, Pam"

And actually it was used the Friday nite before I came Saturday! 60 years in service! Now ya wanna see the pics??

Catch of the century!

WOW! A true treasure! They don't even have one of these at the little KA museum in Greenville Ohio! They have the 2nd generation of them there.
The commercial version of this unit was the Original Model UM.

My Aunt had one of these in her kitchen in 1966 which she bout for like 20 bucks out of the "BUY-LINES" up in NYC,

Got to lve the Stainless Racks!
Good Luck and I hope you get to use it every day.

This house was built in 1951

and has a comlpete metal cabinet kitchen, couldn't quite see the label, it wasn't Youngstown.
They are the third owners and are restoring the cabinets and searching for a "retro" dishwasher whatever that means I'm not sure. But they were using this right up till I bought it.
You couldn't get more retro than a KD-10.

Wow Jon, Im' all a tingle and taken my breath away. I can say for sure I have never seen one of these. Every KA I've seen had the vinyl coated racks. Also, the filter/sump arrangement isn't anything I've ever seen, am I correct it's different than subsequent KAs?

Yes Bob it was their first design and

jetcone's profile picture

it is SOOO SIMPLE I can't believe they changed it out. That tube just has a rubber seal around the bottom and it just lifts up for drain just like a sink plunger in your bathroom sink. Its all brass under thare too! And the tube is all sized for automatic overflow without adding another pressure switch to the mix.

I've only seen crude photos of the drain set-up. Could you post some photos of it?

Here ya go Ben

jetcone's profile picture

drainulation: You can see the solenoid linkage to the right, as the solenoid robot engages it forces the tube and seal inside the tub down to seal  and when it goes off it forces the tube up and all the waste water swhooshes away down the brass drain pipe. The motor sits transverse and just bolts to the side of the sump directly to the pump inside the machine.

Jon, Now you can get rid of that newer KDS14 and have a real classic. My aunt had a KD10P and I rember my brother John loading and running it several times after Thanksgiving dinners.

From the sump shot you first put the drain screen back in place and it covers the sump and the drain-tube:

Congratulations on your new find Jon! Does it mean you will have to make some kind of floor drain in the kitchen, under the dishwasher?

I love the stainless racks, not many dishwashers had them.

Think how long racks would last if they were all made like that. Did these metal racks leave "scars" on dishware and is that the reason why manufacturers moved to vinyl coated racks?

Since perfection cannot be rushed, here is the next progression of the original to the vertical style pump and more familiar pump setup.

Gorgeous!  Congrats on that beauty!

Love the SS racks.  Could it be that they might lead to some chipping during the 300G spin?  That might explain the move to vinyl covered racks...

I am glad you were able to get this Dw Jon. This is the machine that I had asked you about getting for the museum the other week, the owner and I had been emailing back and forth about it. This was the ultimate in simple KA DWs. Keep us posted how it works, I do have many parts for these.

Jon you've made the find of a lifetime here. As a big Hobart lover myself I'm jealous. Washarm design is very similar to early AM series machines. I have the privelege of using a vintage Hobart AM9-t2 every Friday night and nothing compares to a vintage Hobart DW. Enjoy my friend.

The Simplicity of design has proven itself over time. The only SS Racks I have ever seen was in my Aunt's 1950 something Hotpoint. Good Luck with that Beautiful Machine. Eddie

I thought this was the machine you told me about back in July. As I remember you said you had spoken to her back in May-June???At first I couldn't believe it! And was surprised it was still listed for sale when it popped up on a CL search.

I'm gonna plumb it in as a gravity drain to keep it original as possible!! You're gonna have to come back up and play again soon!

They were a very nice young couple who didn't want to see this machine go to the "krusher". I was impressed by that.

Enjoy all!

Would love to see the machine when you bring it to the Cape. Let me know when you're in the area, Eddie
