We just aquired a maytag A606 washer. It seems to work fine, except during the spin cycle. During the spin cycle it is very noisy and makes thumping noises. It reminds me of a out of balance issue. It does not move the machine around the floor at all, just makes an awful racket. It does spin the clothes dry. But, when you run it empty, it is fine. What could be wrong and how do we fix it.

Reach into the tub, grasp the rounded balance ring at the top and see if you can make the tub wobble on its axis at the agitator by alternately lifting each side of the tub. If it moves, pull the agitator out and tighten the big lock nut that holds the tub onto its hub. It is easier to do if you have the proper tool. The tub spins counter clockwise so that is the direction you have to turn the locking nut. There are indentations in it for the tub wrench. I have seen it tightened with a wide blade screw driver and a hammer, but you have to be very careful. A service call might be a good investment.
Grab the agitator and try moving the tub assembly side to side.It should move freely,if it is very stiff it is because the damper pads on the machine base have come off and the transmission support is metal to metal with the base. Check that.
