Yeah the new ones are so compact. Ours is original to the house 1958 and about the size of a FL washer/dryer set on pedestals. But it works great so I'm not tampering with it.

just moving them safely out of the way and the washer needs a timer rebuild, off to MTS.

mistereric - it replaces a 40 year old Weil-Mclane oil fired beast which was never installed properly for Steam. And now with the Elephant oil tank gone I can expand my work area for machines YAY!

I have a TeleDyne Laars installed in my house....its very small...about 20x20x20 square......and does a super efficient job, my gas bill is never above 100.00 during the winter, and my heat is set on 76 degrees.....

check for available rebates from the gas company and your state....also a tax write off if available in your state

I know they went up in price for some models......but I got a boiler heater, a water heater, taps installed for the stove, dryers and grill, all piping and labor, and Gas installed from the street for 2200.00....but then again this was 1993......

the Gas company financed me for 3% interest.....50.00 payment per month....

Gas or oil? If gas, you will have room for another washer - or three Ironrites stacked, where the oil tank was!

Put a relay in the spin circuit of that newly rebuilt timer to keep the deadly electrical draw out of that timer. My control tower needs the same exact thing and I have a nice relay all ready to go...

Nice primer-coat on the 57 set, what color will you paint them? Please, no more Caribbean Blue! (I know...SLAP!)

And just where in the double hocky sticks did that charcoal grey 57 set come from?  I do NOT ever remember seeing those in any preivous pictures of any of the wings of your laundry studio.  those got snuck in under the radar screen I do believe.  HUMPH!!!    Venture just a select few knew those landed in your basement!!  The acquisitoin of the 21st century!!  I do not think thsoe were professionally repainted at an autobody shop like Rick has done to some of his beautiful machines.  Me thinks this was simply a ploy to discretely announce to the world these machines reside in your basement all in the disguise of a new boiler, which dooesn't even closely resemble a vintage washer.

One other consideration I have on ever changing out my big old boiler for a newer compact one is that this old one acts like a gigantic heat sink and keeps the basement very toasty warm all winter long. I don't think it wastes heat as it is all convected up the stairs to the rest of the house as well. And checking with neighbors etc who have newer boilers and mid-hi efficiency gas furnaces our gas bill is good, sometimes even less ( I keep the house at a minimum of 72 all winter, don't like it cold)

AWESOME GAS BOILER MISTER!

I re-tweaked mine when the installer left.

The pressure should not exceed 5 psi ever. 3 psi is more than adequate to get steam to the 2nd floor. Test yours to see that steam gets to the further /highest radiator at the lowest possible set pressure.

I also played with the differential (adjustment of a knob within the "pressure-trol" which is the box mounted on a "pigtail"of looped pipe) to reduce the amount of on-off cycles. The control cuts out the boiler at the setting shown in front, (say 3 psi or leas) and will kick it back in based on a differential). I had mine set for 2 lbs., IIRC, so the boiler would again start at 1 psi to build to 3 psi if the thermostat was not yet satisfied.

You may also want to adjust your heat-anticipator in the thermostat.
These are designed to let the boiler run long enough to build up a head of steam but shut off-prematurely (purposely) such that the remaining steam and retained heat in the cast-iron pipes and radiators brings the room to the set temp, and won't over-shoot that temperature.

BTW the steam header and rising should NOT be copper piping within I think at least 6 feet (2 +/- meters/yards) of the boiler itself. It should be threaded cast-tron pipe. The expanding and contracting of the pipe will rip the soldered joint out eventually.

MUCH LUCK WITH IT.

When I replaced my 1946 oil-fired steam boiler (that also generated hot water for the taps by way of a tankless coil) with a new one, my fuel-oil usage wet down by HALF! Install took ONE day and it cost me $4,500 for a Weil-Mclain unit with an Italian-made RIELO burner head. Said to use high pressure to atomize the fuel-oil more finely and burn more cleanly. (less soot and less carbon build-up).

Dying to find that commercial advert on YouTube that says "I've got gas"; super funny double-meaning word-play TOOT-ing (HA HA HA HA ) the benefits of gas heat.

The box above the boiler is a heat fuse, if there is ever a runaway boiler it will melt and shut off all power to the boiler.

You know your steam, did you read "The Art of Steam Heating"? Don't forget the Hartford Loop there! And copper pipe is the reason the old boiler was getting replaced 20 years early, a very bad install in the 70's caused it to run dry too many times. Nothing but iron pipe in my whole house now, the only copper allowed near the boiler is for the feed and the power!

I expect to save a lot on energy this year, I am putting in two zones so the tenant can set their own heat finally! I had to crank my thermostat to 69-70 to get a long enough cycle to get heat to the upstairs apartment so I always ended up roasting down here. And I could never use my wood stove as the tenant would freeze. Now I have all my wood stacked and ready and I can start a fire at 5 PM and it will toast up the house to 72 degrees and run till way past bedtime so I won't have to run my side of the boiler unless I am feeling lazy.

The thread seems in the right place to me.

Jetcone the basement "additions" look really nice.  The grandparents all had wood burning stoves, so the late folks had a "stairstep" buck stove in the basement as a backup and to save a little money during really cold periods, I am glad the tradition lives on at your home.  There was always something very special about waking up at the folk's home in the winter, the faint smell of a wood fire, fresh coffee brewing, bacon frying.  Thank you for posting the Frigidaires too. alr

Mike the boiler is Steam

jetcone's profile picture

and is supposed to come in around 86-92% efficient. But the piping overhead will still get toasty hot so the basement will still be warm-warm and dry in the winter especially when the Filtrator Dryer kicks in. Greg wouldn't let me even turn it on this summer!

The dryer that is.

alr: what is a stairstep buck stove? is that like a wood burning boiler or furnace for hot air?

they were very low use machines

jetcone's profile picture

She probably did "undies on Sundays" with them which is part of the reason they are in such good shape. The other part was she smoked like a chimney, the entire house was coated in tar and nicotine which actually saved the chrome.

Here's a close up shot after I removed the coating.

You can see the build up between the prongs of the crown, thats how covered the machines were.

Two zones? With one steam boiler? Do tell! I have only seen it once in the local church where I was brainwashed--er, I mean spent a lot of time. There was a motorized vale for each zone that was controlled by a low-voltage thermostat. But it has been decades since I have seen the mechanicals.

In my Cape-Cod style house of 1.5 stories (storys => UK) I added a loop of hydronic (hot-water) baseboard heating to the basement. This is possible because the bottom of the boiler and the floor level of the heated space was the same. The upper story-and-a-half remained steam heat.

The circulator (small pump) needs to pull water out of the bottom of the boiler, run it through the "radiators" (actually baseboard-style convectors) and return it about one foot (30cm) up. The circulator was designed for an "open-loop" system. Meaning it was designed to be used with oxygenated water. In a closed system (your typical hydronic heating systems) the oxygen is eventually depleted and bled out of the system. A one-pipe steam system is actually an open-to-air system that remains with oxygenated water. [a circulator/pump designed for an oxygen-free closed system, and used in oxygenated water, will deteriorate, rust and die prematurely).

Normally, in a "closed" (i.e. airtight) hydronic system the returning water is pumped back into the boiler by the circulator. The hottest water is taken from the top and pumped apound the heating (radiator) loop(s).

Totally, boiler schmoiler, lets see some more shots of the WI-57C/DI-57C! The "C" of course is for charcoal!!!

We're waiting for the money shots, tap, tap, tap. ;-)

Jetcone,

No I don't have radiant floor heating (but wish I did!). I just had all the electric baseboard heaters replaced with hot water baseboard heaters. I have 5 zones in the house of which 3 are controlled by automatic thermostats (master bedroom, main bathroom, living/dining area) and 2 zones are controlled by regular thermostats (guest bedroom, lower level).

Odd thought on a rainy Sunday afternoon

It's too bad that tar and nicotine residue can't protect lung tissue the way it does chrome and porcelain which are absolutely dazzling on your charcoals; can't wait to see a close-up of the tower face unbandaged.

With these gold coals and your glass-fronted Easy, you are a gifted, unbeatable treasure hunter. More power to ya!

I am facinated by the light used in the video - it is called a timing light? How does it work? Would I be able to use one to find out my washer's spin speeds through the glass window?

That light

jetcone's profile picture

is called a strobe light and was invented by a man named Edgerton at MIT in the 50's. As you can see it stops action so you can see what is going on at speed. They are called timing lights in the auto industry because of their use to check valve and spark timing at idle speed.

Miama Heat Wave - great song guys! Is the scope auto-sensing the RPM? If so, that is super cool. Brand/model number please? :D

Oh yeah, that old grey set of Frigidaires are also the bee's knees.

Thanks. Are you adjusting the speed of the strobe to determine the spin speed, or is it doing that automatically? My understanding is that you must know the approx speed because you could set the speed at half or twice the spin speed and still get the same results. Is that correct?

Post# 550330 , Reply# 69   10/19/2011 at 00:41 (4,565 days old) by tolivac (greenville nc)

we have an older version of that light at work-a Strobetac-Yes--like shown in the video to measure speed(RPM) and observe a high speed object in motion(washer tub)Ours has a xenon lamp as the strobe-and a calibrated knob that indicates speed. It hasn't been used in years.suggested this to OLight-maker of LED flashlights-they make the strobe function on their lights variable----Then you have a strobe light for measuring speeds and observing motion.would be nice.Sometimes we need to see something in motion here.

there is a vernier dial

jetcone's profile picture

on the strobe that you adjust manually to the point where motion stops then you can read the speed off the dial. An expensive strobe has a very very fine tuned vernier & oscillator circuit, it used to be the xenon tube and power supply was expensive but now they power car headlights,  the controls are what drive the price now.

Amazing how compact the new boilers are... and what a CT set!! WoW! You can get a timing light at any Sears, NAPA, or Advance Auto or the like.

You're in Melrose?? Both my folks grew up there - Mom on Warwick Rd, Dad on Porter St

Strobe Light

jeff_adelphi's profile picture
The strobe Jon and I used in the video is an Extech Stroboscope Tachometer. I have had it about 10 years now. It is fun to to see in action, but it is tricky to get the speed set.

Laser Tachometer

jeff_adelphi's profile picture
This tachometer is much easier to use. It uses a laser to measure the speed. It must have a reflective target on the moving object. It's much faster to use, but doesn't give the stoped action view of the strobe.

Have noticed, over the years, that sometimes, in certain slants of light, and combinations of color, the Unimatic spins seem to slow down, freeze, and reverse direction.

'Course, it could be the shroomsWink

Jeff's strobe skill captures what I've never seen filmed before. Amazing and impressive. Thank you, Gentlemen.

Jeff, thanks for the explanations and pictures. I am totally fascinated by your gadgets! I think a strobe would be a good way to verify the spin speeds on my FL washer.

Without a strobe light, I got an almost static view of agitator of my W3-224 GMini washer while it was spinning when I filmed it with a fluorescent light. But I have no idea of the actual spin speed. Should be less than half of your Unimatic according to the factory specs!

Single bulb and HID lights can act as fixed frequency strobe lights--60Hz.Sometimes use them to set TT speed in a studio. Some HID and flourescent lights run on modern solid state or digital ballsts-the operating frequency of these is much higher-so the object veiwed under them would have to be spinning really fast to get any freeze-motion strobe action. With the modern ballasts- since the bulb frequency is so high-you don't see any flicker.modern SS and digital ballasts run the bulb at frequencies from 20Khz to 60Khz.also you don't hear any humming or buzzing.
