So as John let out of the bag, I did pickup another appliance en-route to get the Maytags. This machine is fairly neat and apparently pretty rare. What was really odd is that I ran across it after John Lefever and I were having a conversation about just this very thing. Apparently Kenmore produced this as a match to their 24" washer but Whirlpool supposedly did not make one to match theirs. John has the 24" Kenmore version, which I want to match my DD 24" washer, so this may end up in Beltsville.

One thing I can say is that it is certainly a neat little machine. It also has a lot of features for such a small machine. As John pointed out to me, the "infinite" heat settings are actually 36 settings, I counted. It has automatic dry cycles and timed. It actually has more flexibility than the Maytag dryer I picked up with it's heat settings and more generous cycle options.

Essentially it's a 240v version of the portable unit in a full-height, 24" cabinet. Same drum, motor etc, even front panel. It can take a light load from a 24" DD machine, but don't over-do it. In my old house I have the Kenmore 24" DD mated with the 110v Lady K portable. It has worked out OK, but you have to be careful not to pack the washer or the clothes will come out wrinkled in the dryer. Realistically this dryer is for space contraints as it will not hold as much as the washer, but it's still a neat pair. I think it's at least a good compromise as the portable washer holds a good deal less than the dryer, so the full-size 24" washer coupled with this dryer give you a little more capacity.

Anywho... here it is, the 1988 Whirlpool 24" electric dryer:

Nice machine! I think this is the same machine another member and I were having a discussion about a while back. I wonder if there is a gas version.

The Console

A very smart looking control panel, all the options that you could want in such a tiny little machine.

(Pardon the roof of the truck, free appliance hauler ya know...)

Drum

macboy91si's profile picture
The drum was in good shape, no bad denim stains. Needs a lint filter (in the back of the drum on these) but that's about it. The heat this produces is amazing for such a small drum.

The Timer

Lots of options on this one. This pic would make a need profile pic as well.

Gas Version

macboy91si's profile picture
Well, I know they made the portable version in gas, not sure about these, although in theory it wouldn't be hard to produce one.

The KM version we have is listed as being available in gas in the catalog but I have never actually seen one. In the WP Micro-film this model is listed as being made in gas. Like the electric model it was available in white, almond, golden wheat, toast and platinum colors.

It is amazing as we were a WP sales and service dealer all through the 1980s and 1990s and beyond and I never knew that they made this machine. Cool find Tim.

From the looks of your pics, similar in capacity to our 60's something Whirlpool Imperial Dryer (out on loan). Definitely agree with not overloading this beauty...guaranteed wrinkles. I wonder if the windowed door on our 62 would fit this 80's version. From the pictures looks like it could! Enjoy :-)

Can you find this filter easily in the U.S.?

If no, i can send you a brand new from here.

Brastemp Ative dryer still use the same drum design, it has been unchenged since late 70's/early 80's.

It's easily found on any Brastemp Authorized Service.

Tim this is really cool. I remember the KM 24" but I don't remember seeing the WP model. I just find the compact awsome looking. I also remember the variable tempature control on other models, and I was disappointed when they stopped making them.
Thanks for posting,
Peter

Nice find, I had the portable Whirlpool GAS dryer at the shore house same interior with the 3 fins and lint filter in the rear of the drum. Real workhorse, it has since been replace with a digital Maytag E1000 (believe that is the model #) Washer / Dryer, I did not have the heart to get rid of it since it is still in excellent working condition and took it up north.

WP 24" GAS DRYERS

combo52's profile picture

WP is still producing 24" gas dryers as part of thier 24" thin-twin stack washer-dryer, I fact I just sold a new one yesterday. So getting a new lint filter is no problem.

matching washer

my aunt had the matching washer! well atleast i think it was. it had the exact same styling. her sister had it for about 10 or so years, my aunt had it for another 10 or so nd it never gave hassles. but then about a year before they emigrated the timer went so they bought a smaller machine. she had the new dryer though (now ours) because her defy autodry died a while before the washer.
i was so shocked when i went on errands with my mom and the 1 lady we stopped at has this exact same dryer! very cool! be sure to let us know how it performs and how long it takes on the auto cycles! enjoy! :)

The performance of this dryer

I always wonder WHY Whirlpool Corporation still makes these style dryers to this day. How can they be effective, pulling heat from the back TO the back filter & vent?
It never ceases to amaze me, such an antiquated design. I never liked the performance of these. My 1989 Lady Kenmore gas is the front-filter type, quietest dryer I ever had and NEVER one repair! If only it did reverse-tumble...

WP DRYER DESIGN

combo52's profile picture

WPs full sized dryers with both the heat source and exhaust in the rear are actually faster drying and more energy efficient than dryers that pull the air through the drum to the front, with light to normal sized loads. The dryers where the heat comes the back and exhausts at the front do have an advantage with very large loads but with smaller loads the hot air tends to just travel through the middle of the tumbling clothes.

Jason I know that you were talking about WP compact dryers  and WP has been building these for over 40 years and I have never had a complaint about unevenness of drying or speed on these dryers. And while the full sized 27" WP built dryers are very good dryers they still have far more problems with lint in the cabinets and slow drying than thier 29" machines. The 27" dryers are almost always the ones we see packed with lint that have caught fire.

Consumer Reports did tests of efficiency on clothes dryers about 15 years ago and found the 29" WP built dryers the most efficent when drying normal sized loads compared to almost all other brands where the air travels from back to front. I have also never seen any advantage in reverse tumbling in a full sized machine. Both Philco Ford and much later Frigidare tried this and both dropped it as thier seemed to be no advantage. And it both cases it the dryer dried more slowly and caused a host of additional repair problems.

dryer design

i have the new heavy duty whirlpool dryer (pic available in a deluxe thread cant remember which though) and i must say the exhaust system is very effective. i dont tumble dry everything but there are times i do and i use the low heat setting for absolutly everything except jeans. and it still drys the loads very quick, even big loads. very impressed. and to me, the drums on the whrlpools look bigger than the new speed queen dryers. just wish we had whirlpools with auto/sensor prigrammes. here they have the 110 min time programme and the 30 min air dry. when i do a big load it normally takes 60 to 70 mins on low heat
