I've only seen twin-tub pulsator machines with the offset, automatics with a pulsator have in the center for obvious reasons. I have never seen this setup of washer with an offset pulsator where the basket drive spins as well, if they do exist, they're very rare. Since most pulsator machines are on the cheaper end, I can't ever see this being feasible. Newer machines don't per say tangle as bad as these older ones. I've noticed that many are using larger pulsator discs that only pulse back and forth which makes the water do more of the work. If you don't overload them though they all work better. My 1973 Hitachi machine has the offset impeller and it can also tangle and creates a lot of waves in the water that like to go over the tub. That said it's also a unidirectional impeller since the pump is driven from the wash motor. The 1974 Hitachi automatic however is a reversing machine and the long runs in each direction ensure knots.
