Hotpoint BIG BIN

paulg's profile picture
We had a Hotpoint fridge with the BIG BIN.
It was more of a BIG PAIN.
Early on the spring sprung on the lid. Instead of the spring keeping the lid down, it kept the lid up. You had to push that plastic lid down just to close the refrigerator door. When you opened the refrigerator door it would bounce back open. It did that for years.
Why my father didn't get a replacement bin is beyond me, after all he DID work for Hotpoint.
However, the fridge did have the electric butter warmer which more than made up for the stupid bin trouble.

Why am I not able to see the vast majority of photos Louie posts in these three threads.  Just like on this thread, I"m not able to see replies 5, 6, or 7.  Just a big box that's outlined and a little "x" box on the upper left side.  I even right click "show picture" and nothing happens. very frustrated and disappointed I can't see all these ads.

I remember the parents of one of my Mom's girlfriends having an air conditioner similar to the Kelvinator shown above.  Their model was on legs, stood about chest high, had casters on the bottom of the legs, and the exhaust and drain hose were vented out an open window.  My memory is somewhat vague though because the last time I saw it was about 1982 or so.

Kelvinator Cookbook

paulg's profile picture
I have a couple of Kelvinator cookbooks from the 1930's and 1940's. When I needed to make home-made ice- cream for a party I used the Kelvinator recipe. Who would know more than them?? I used their egg-custard ice-cream recipe.
Anyway, the recipe is faaaaabulous and I have used it ever since.
In a strange juxtaposition of times, I put the Kelvinator ice- cream glop in a Panasonic ice-cream freezer that is battery operated and microprocessor controlled; you just place it in the freezer and push the button. It stirs every few minutes until solid. The LED blinks when done.
Perfect results every time.

Boy, that is one SENSITIVE Motorola Color-TV.
You can pull a perfect color picture on.... MARS... with the dipole down?
Just how did they jam 4000 IF stages in that set? Or maybe they ran a real long cable.
Those sets were so heavy it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't float away.

TV reception on Mars?Yes--love to see that transmitter and antenna system to BROADCAST to that set-and at UHF no less!
"chairside control" with the cabrole legs-why couldn't some of our autotune SW transmitters come with a control head like that-"SW broadcasting to the world without leaving your control room seat!"Philco was ahead of its time!and inclined "sounding board" speaker systems--HMM-should the modulators in our transitters be inclined?
If there are 340 tons of dishes to do over a lifetime-then its time for how many dishwashers to wash that? How many tons of dirty clothes over a lifetime?
Did RCA invent the Finial Laser TT back in 1941?Or is that TT really a CD player?
And like how they call radio sets in those days "Instruments"?
the Kodak 8MM projector with "Edit" mode playback speeds-cool!Bet they don't make that type of projector anymore-now they make DIGITAL projectors for cinema and IMAX use with laser lamp houses.
Really fun ads-have some old magazines at home with similar ads-the swap shop in Grimesland gets these types of magazines.

I don't think that RCA used a laser. It was still a tonearm/stylus of some kind.
Item 4 gives it away:

"By exerting astoundingly light pressure on the records, the magic tone cell gives them extraordinary long life."

So something is in contact with the record, I wonder what?

Here's a link to an article explaining the magic tone cell and how it worked.

That was one advanced turntable for 1942! I wonder if any exist today?

"So something is in contact with the record, I wonder what?"

Allen, in your article they say this: "The scanner is a carefully ground sapphire point which replaces the needle." I suspect the "scanner" is really a sapphire stylus.

I have to wonder how well the RCA system worked. As far as I know, the system didn't survive. Was it a case that it really didn't perform well in the real world? It was better on paper than practice (like at least the early years of the audio CD)? Or did it perform well for the time, but get surpassed a few years later? Or was it a great or potentially system that, for whatever reason, fell by the wayside? (I personally have to doubt this last item; however, one never knows-- I have written off too many technologies just to be proven wrong, so I don't casually write anything off anymore!) In any case, it would be interesting to have this RCA system in working order to play with.

Also I wonder if other radio companies didn't have a system like this. I seem to recall having seen a vintage ad like this before, but I THINK it was Philco. But maybe my memory is faulty....

The RCA TT does sound clever and ahead of its time-the device appears to use a Sapphaire "Stylus" at very low tracking forces to trace the record's groove-and the ability to play both sides of the record without removing it from the TT sounds pretty advanced-we need a video of this machine in operation.surprized it didn't find its way into a jukebox. So the TT does use a stylus of some sort-but not a tracking system involving laser or other light as a Finial Laser TT does. The Finials were used for a very short time in some radio stations-DJ's liked them becuase you used it like a CD player.Cuts on the record could be cued up ahead of time and played when needed. The jock didn't have to handle a tone arm.

I also noticed that about the cigarette lighter in the Westinghouse ad, guess it was targeted at people who liked to puff away as they cooked. I can imagine the scene in the ad illustration a little differently, with a big old unfiltered Pall Mall hanging out of the mouth of the pretty young hostess, dropping ash all over the coffee.

Anyone else here remember the lead-in to Married With Children where Peg Bundy is making dinner while smoking, and in the next scene her dinner guest spears a still smoldering butt in her plate of spaghetti?

I've always wanted that Zenith 6051. It is a great set and nice to look at.
But I did get close!
I have the Zenith 6015-2 round color with Space Command. I bought it in about 1977 and still have it. (Amvets, About $8.00 I think).
Ugly metal cabinet but when I put a new Sylvania CRT in it about 1978 the picture was absolutely stunning.
It actually only stopped working just recently, after a move. Haven't fixed it yet. The reliability of that set was absolutely amazing.
I used to be able to pull in stations from Indiana! It wasn't a great picture but I was flabbergasted.

Great Ads Louie,

Thanks for posting.

The Coldspot "Convertible" Side by Side's are neat. I had a best friend who's family actually had the white one the the Cole's had in the ad. They also bought their Grandmother a 1969 version of the one the Henderson's had in Avocado. When I knew them and would hang out and eat at there house, these Coldspots were already over 16 years old. They would not have traded them for anything! They would also use the Freezer top side as a Fridge most of the time since they had a separate Freezer in a utility room.
I see these from time to time on Craigslist. I also see the Amana version quite often. Does anyone else know who made these during the years? I vaguely remember GE.
It is amazing to see what was old is new again with manufactures offering this same design once again.
I would love to have one if they were not such an energy hog! Just to figure out how they actually worked.
Thanks again for taking the time out and posting the ads. Lots of fun reading!
Brent

How is a GAS refrigerator capable of making ice cubes w/o electricity? The I/M seems so much like one you'd find in an electric fridge, yet SERVALL claims it uses no other energy source other than natural gas!

How is that possible, & why wasn't this design more widely used? (And why did 'Gas' not last?)

Gas refrigerators

paulg's profile picture
They had a burner that heated ammonia as a refrigerant. The fridge would use electricity to operate the ice-maker or defrost timer. If not equipped with defrost timer or icemaker, the unit indeed would use no electricity.
Why didn't GAS refrigerators persist? Dunno. My aunt had a Whirlpool gas in the 1960s WITH an icemaker! Their popularity in the home seems to have faded after that. You can still buy these "absorption" refrigerators generally for RV use to this day.
If not perfectly maintained, older GAS refrigerators emitted carbon-monoxide gas which resulted in numerous deaths. Since Servel was among the few (if only) gas refrigerator makers of the time, and probably the most popular, their stuff was probably targeted as the refrigerators aged and deaths increased.
I thought Servel's agreement with Electrolux to make the guts ended and Whirlpool bought up Servel to get the icemaker patents?
This I am not clear on. Perhaps the group knows.
