GE Laundromat

akronman's profile picture

When I was a kid and the washer broke, we went to a GE laundromat until the repairman was done. When I was a college boi, GE Laundry about a block from my dorm. In my first apartment, GE in the communal laundry room. So I always thought of them as commercial/industrial, no frills, it wasn't what I wanted at home. Then I found this hobby and heard all you folks talk them up, and found a 77 Filter-Flo for $25 with 2 speeds and mini-wash, I swapped out the original 4-vane agitator for a ramped one from Yogitunes, and have admired GE ever since. Great agitation, plentiful rinses, all the options and cycles needed, great machine.

We had two laundromats nearby growing up in S FLA. One of them was Whirlpool Belt drives (still in operation to this day) The other had Penncrest machines. I didn't know what a Filter-Flo was until vacationing out West during Summer break.

Penncrest Coin-Op Washers?

Malcolm, are you kidding-was there REALLY a laundromat that featured JCPenney Penncrest(Hotpoint)washers? I never heard of such. My friends live in Buford off Buford Highway, family in Lawrenceville, Tucker and Atlanta!

GE FF Coin Laundry

macboy91si's profile picture
There is one only a mile away from my old house. It was (is?) a GE laundry with many Harvest machines from 76+. We frequented this place when I was a kid before we had a house with hookups. SOME of these machines are still in use but not many. There are also the newer design units that the owner says are not repairable and are usually god for sometimes as long as 3 years. More than 25+ years before he started letting the Filter-Flo's die on out due to just being worn out and parts price hikes. That's not too bad I don't think personally, oh but the sound of 5-7 sequentially banging FF brakes was something I remember well as a kid, getting money from Mom and loading them all up and starting them one right after the other.

Penncrest

I had a Penncrest fridge!  I couldn't understand how it cooled because there was no fan that blew inside it.  And the bins in the bottom were actually metal rather than plastic.  I wish i still had it!

What a sweet sign, are you able to take it home? I have been on the hunt for a Maytag coin-op sign. Or any Maytag sign. I emailed a laundromat which closed down about a month and a half ago to see if they still had any signs left, they had thrown them all out a few days before I emailed : (

Coin Laundry w/ NORGE Washers & Dryers

I once saw a coin laundry long-ago that had a 'NORGE-equipped laundry' sign, or maybe it was a coin laundry w/ a 'NORGE laundry equipment' sign...

Yep.

The machines had the Easy Spiralator in them. The only time we went in there, I was too short to do much more than lift the lid a crack and see the agitator rocking back and forth. For some reason, I recall the cost to wash was 2 dimes.

I Remember: "Authorized WESTINGHOUSE Laundry"

daveamkrayoguy's profile picture
OK, I'm also having a "flashback" to WESTINGHOUSE also "authorizing" their appliances at coin laundromats, as well!
