Strange Timer Issues ----'55 Unimatic 		[Down to Last]

Heres one for ya. I sent the timer for my '55 Unimatic (WV-65)off to T&E to recondition it----it would not advance and I thought it could use a good going over.

When I got it back I installed it back in the machine. All the wires from the harness were re-installed to the exact posts they were attached to when the timer was removed (I had made a template and the posts are color coded to match the color wires attached).

The "stalk" (shaft?) of the timer passes through a plate that forms the front of the timer. There are two holes for screws that mount the unit to the console, one at about the 8 o'clock position another at about the 2 o'clock position. On the face plate of the timer right beside where the "stalk" passes through is a tiny metal tab that is supposed to push the timer/dial out into the off position at the end of the cycle. The "stalk" also has a flat side so the timer dial only fits one way---although there are two tiny screws where one can fine tune the position of the dial a little bit forward or back).

So here's what is happening. The machine fills for the wash correctly, then begins to pulsate normally. The timer advances untill just past the 2 minute position untill about at the letter "E" of "TIME" then pulsation stops and the water valve(s) are energized, the timer then advances FOUR increments and then starts to pulsate again (at about the position that the overflow wash should start) two more increments then goes in to first spin. It spins two increments before that tiny little tab on the faceplate of the timer pushes the timer dial out into the off position, shutting down the machine!

I must then manually advance the timer TWO increments to get past the little tab (so I can push the knob back in) and the machine energizes the water valve for the rinse fill normally. The machine then normally completes the rest of the rinse cycle and final spin dry.

I spoke with Steve at T&E and then sent the timer back to him. I thought for sure it was partly a contact problem (for the strange fill/pause during the wash cycle) and I thought the face plate of the timer had been re-installed upside down so that the tiny tab on it was forcing the timer into the off position during the first spin.

I just got the timer back and re-installed it and damn if it isn't STILL doing the same things! I would like to hear some contructive feedback before I have to call T&E----AGAIN. I do have some sort of warranty with them so I'd better hurry if I have to send it back AGAIN-----I hope they will take it back again. I don't want them to think I'm the problem. To that end I have triple checked my installation.

Child, Just get some Holy Water; sprinkle liberally.

If all else fails add a drop to a gallon of water, then drink that over the course of a few days. A few drops "Charges" the whole batch.

This is the time of year when the veils between this plane and the others is thinnest.. BOO!

That would be my first guess, I would try turning it around and see if it helps. But it could be more than just that, it sounds like the whole thing is assembled wrong including the variable wash/fill time assembly.

 Unfortunately T&E has used some sort of bright yellow glue to seal the corners of the faceplate to the timer assembly-----my guess is to make sure no one tampers with it---thus voiding what warranty it may have.

ALTHOUGH, at this point I'm not too keen on the idea of sending this back to T&E so it might not matter. Twice burned----yada,yada,yada.

Even if I do take the thing apart and turn the faceplate around, I'm still looking to get the other problem fixed. One day soon I'll get someone to show me how to work on a timer and I'll do it myself from then on! I'm thinking I'll just end up calling Bruce Chapman at Mid-West and "eat a little crow" (for not sending it to him in the first place)and see what he says. Funny thing is I've used Mid-West three times and NEVER had a problem. The FIRST time I use T&E I have a problem. Achhhh!

I tinkered with it some more this evening----moving a few wires abound---but that made things worse! I am beginning to think the folks at T&E are not using the right information for rebuilding this type of timer!
