mobile maid and old ge frig

i will post pix of frig its a 57 GE combo with lazy susan shelves and pink interior .i dont have room for the mobile maid,i would like to keep it.its very cool.i ran it by pouring water in and it does run, timer advances, and it pumps out good.i dont have a faucet adapter yet so i dont know about water valve.i have just learned that it fills using an amp relay? is this correct?hose reel and cord reel both work perfect.oh yea after 45 mins of running NO LEAKS.i could not believe that.even the wheels are good.has been painted and has adent in front lower right.

'57 GE Combination Fridge

rp2813's profile picture

I have that same model refrigerator. Looks like you're in the middle of a thermostat issue. I had to replace mine a few months ago. Feel free to contact me about my experience. I also have the service manual.

Here, for about the 10th time, is a shot of my fridge.  That's 120 watts worth of interior lighting, from three separate sources.  Ah, the olden days when energy was cheap and the power companies encouraged everyone to use as much as they could.

Oh, Ralph, it may be about the 10th time, but we never tire of that beauty! Post away, sir.

Ralph, I NEVER tire of seeing one of my orphans in her new home! I am still jazzed that you took to her like that. One of many treasures from "The Pile" behind our shop that found a good home...

I am healing the femur better every day and am about ready to start playing... errr... WORKING on some things that have been haunting me these past three or four months including a '63(?) Mobile Maid... I like the one I see here!!!

Hey Andy, I can't pull a beer or soda out of that fridge without thinking of you!   Thanks again for rescuing it!  If David (Marler) had his way, the fridge would have followed him to Tucson but it's not going anywhere, I can assure you of that!

Joseph, you don't see food because it's my designated beverage (and sometimes overflow) fridge.

John, good luck finding OEM control for your fridge.  The aftermarket one I have is working fine, but OEM would have been preferred, as the mounting would be more solid.  If you decide to go with an aftermarket one (Larry at Modern Parts might still have one in stock) I can give you some pointers on how to modify it (with provided parts) and make it work just like the original.  The controls seem to be the weak link on GE fridges of this era.  Mine did the same thing; wouldn't shut off.  I had the aftermarket control here waiting, so took appropriate action and the fridge has been fine ever since.

Nate and I opened up the old control but couldn't really see any obvious issues with it.  Otherwise, I would have preferred to repair that control and continue to use it.  If a visual check of your control reveals the trouble, I can perhaps provide parts from mine to fix yours.

Gotcha

joefuss1984's profile picture

I understand.  Its always useful to have an extra.  I have a new Hotpoint in the garage that came with the house when i rented it.  It is tiny and a friend gave me a side by side which fit the space in the kitchen so much better, so it became a drink fridge.

I couldn't help but to pick tho :-)

oem v unifit

Ralph correct again.the uni fits work fine but getting the knob to look right is diffucult.I have my eye on a hotpoint combo 53 or 54.I have not seen one just like it before.super good condition.the man said make a offer.

getting the knob to look right is diffucult

rp2813's profile picture

Exactly.  Based on my experience (hindsight is definitely 20/20), a universal fit can be made to look and feel (as in a thumbwheel that doesn't wobble) like the original if, 1) The adjustable holes for the mounting screws are properly aligned with those in the interior liner's trim -- which is not as cut & dried as one might think, and, 2) A conservative approach is used should the thumbwheel post on the replacement control need to be shortened.  If it appears you'd have to make deeper notches in the end of the thumbwheel shaft as a result of your cut, you're removing too much from the post.  I ended up with not enough thread in the post for the screw that secures the thumbwheel.

I got tired of looking at the empty egg shelf on my fridge.  Only once have I had to use that space for something due to lack of room.  I now have an installation of a dozen multi-colored plastic Easter eggs in there indefinitely.

That Hotpoint sounds nice.  Post pix if you get it.

Hotpoint

rp2813's profile picture

That's an interesting model and looks a little different (more old school) from the Combination knock-offs I'm used to seeing from Hotpoint.

If you can provide interior shots, I'd like to see them.  I think you've found an unusual model there.

Great looking fridge, and it's complete!  I have never seen a Hotpoint like that either.  I like the rear coils in the fresh food section.  No worries about tall items coming in contact with coils like on my fridge, and more usable space (excepting door storage) than a model with revolving shelves.

So there's no drain in the freezer bottom for the defrost water?  Oh, yeah, that might be a deal-breaker for me, but it's such a nice fridge otherwise . . .
