I've been looking for one of those dryers, and this one is gas to boot. Too bad they've seen some heavy use. I'll continue to hold out for a nicer one.

I've been using the digital Maytag for the last few weeks. Hands down one of the best Maytag's made.

I need the electric version of this dryer in white.  It is a great washer, we use ours at least once a week.

These look like they're straight out of the late 1980's/early 1990's.. As stupid as this sounds, I'm gathering that these would only be TOL, right?

The "Custom Cycle" buttons have me curious as to what they did exactly..

MAYTAG ELECTRONIC PAIR

combo52's profile picture

These are 1990s machines, came out in the early 1990s. The pair pictured are early models as they soon had either all white or almond control panels to go with the cabinet color, the later mono-chromatic machines were much prettier than the ones for sale. Last week there was an almond electronic washer on the junk pile at our distributor, which I left there. These machines used the same type of electronic designs that thier electronic stack pair did. And like the first Neptune's they were very old school and overly complicated, MT didn't get to a more modern design until they introduced the 5500 series of Neptune's and all these electronic TL washers were long gone by then.

These machines were much more versatile than the mechanical timer controlled washers and dryers. All of these washers had the orbital transmission but they didn't make it till they had the Load Sensor agitator and the better motor main drive belt tensionor that finally allowed the main drive belt to stop slipping all the way through the wash cycle under heavy loads.

The Custom Cycle button allows you to have a cycle that you select remembered so you can use the same options each time by just hitting one pad. Most newer machines all do this today.

The CL washer certainly fills a void between the first digital Maytag washer - the A9900, and the later white LAT9904. I'm guessing the Des Moines CL washer is an LAT9900, matching the parts books I have.

My A9900 (pictured first) was first introduced in 1990. The serial number puts this one in the spring of 1991. I'd guess the LAT9900 is a 1992 or early 1993 machine by the revised fill flume and "Dependable Care" top, while the white versions would have come later in 1994 or so. I don't have much Maytag literature after 1990, so I'm shooting in the dark for dates.

After comparing all three versions, I think the fonts are nicer on the first one, but the looks of the white one are just stunning.

In terms of the over-building of these, I see why Maytag did so. They were adopting newer digital controls while retaining the same 115v motor they had been using for a few decades up to that point. Using nice heavy duty reversing relays were the easiest way to keep these 'Maytags' without sacrificing to a DC controlled motor at the time and possibly having a big dollar lemon on their hands. Things certainly changed at Maytag just a few years later.

The water valve on the first A9900 was the same as earlier machines, with the later LAT versions using a low voltage 24v DC thermostatically controled valve, regulating the valves via a thermostat on the output of the valve. Very similar to the 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic.

These certainly will be collector Maytags in short time.

I have one that has the white control panel, but it is cabinetted like the A990. The model number reads LAT9200BAE. What year could this model be? It came with the house so I don't know.

Thanks in advance,
James

James - can you get the serial number off the model tag? It's located at the top of the control panel. Any pictures?

No pictures of it but:

Serial number is BB382475.

It is not an electronic model. I don't mean to give the impression that it is, but since we were discussing model years, I wanted to find out. It has two cycles, 4 water levels and temps, and one speed motor.

One addendum: I just double checked the tag again, and at the far right end of it are the letters HM. There was about an inch or so of blank space on the tag between the numbers and the letters, so that is why I did not catch them, so the serial number reads:

BB382475 HM

If my understanding is correct, the two letters at the end are code for the year. Would this be early or mid 90s?

So... vacation got me away from this fun thread.

Both serial numbers come back 1993. Both would have the revised Dependable Care Plus tops. James' being June, Kenny's being August.

I'm going to take a stab and say the Des Moines washer is probably a 1992. I'm not sure when the revised tops came around. My A9900 is from the spring of 1991.

Cool washers for sure!

Alas my washer is 18 years old (almost 19). The first one we had lasted just short of 27 years, but this one could very well outlast it since the first 11 years of its life saw light use.

Thanks for the info Swestoyz, and Happy New Year.

I spied the set in CR yesterday, but I'm going to pass.

Believe me, every bone in my body is wondering what rationale I have for walking away from the set... :)

I've played with the electronic models from the early &#

And they were light-years ahead of Whirlpool in build quality of the electronics.

Sorry fellas - I've adopted the age old "One In - One Out" principle and at the moment, nothing is set to leave. I suspect they will find a good home. :)
