The machines are fab, and I'm also checking out your plumbing system as well. Much more sophisticated than my PVC/ABS set up, but it still works. And I LOVE the fact that you have both the washer and the dryer. That's the only way I collect machines -- I have to have twins!

Wow! Those are simply GAWJUS! One of my favorite designs; so Jetsonian! Wonder why they were only produced for 1 year. Seems like a huge expense to restyle after only a year. Many happy wash loads with them... Are they both working?

My 1967 landlord's Frigi wasn't on concrete, it was on the flimsy wooden underhouse of a hillside Hawaii home. And it didn't cause anyone palpitations or earthquakes. I lived UNDER it and I couldn't tell when it stopped without walking upstairs to see. When I wasn't standing there watching it.

But it wasn't the magnificent 'control tower' machine. Those are dramatically understated, or understatedly dramatic. A pinnacle among good-old Merikun laundry design. What beauties.

1957 CONTROL TOWER FRIGIDARE WASHER & DRYER

combo52's profile picture

WOW They  look great Jon, I hope you are also going to have a cement base installed for the LKM gas combo so we can finally get it spinning smoothly.

Someone asked if this was a vented dryer or condenser dryer, All Frigidare TOL dryers from 1950-1960 were electric and no vent air-cooled condenser machines. And about the stability of these machines, Frigidare washers had less vibration problems after 1961 as they reduced the max spin speed and went to a wider 27" cabinet that year. But all the original Uni-Matics were just 25" wide and needed a good solid floor for best vibration free spin performance.

I liked how you either used the small load for the rinse or advanced the tower clock pointer for early agitation.

I think the cement shows them off pretty well. The golden agitator was the last year before color came to "live water action". But I'll bet there were a few '57's that were assembled with '58 pulsators in color!! We need to keep looking!

I can't get over how stable the machines are in the cement, at the end of the video you can see how the machine is at top speed and the cabinet and tower are not even vibrating. Unbelievable when you think of the engineering.

Great viedo Jon this may be your best yet, I am giving it a A+   LOL.

What makes the rubber parts of the agitator so orange to golden in color ? These parts were originally light grey and on mine they have all turned a dark grey color, but yours look great, is it the lighting or was it all the nicotine that they were exposed to?

nicotine for sure. Thats why the chrome is so pristine as well. Heavy smoking may be bad for people but its good for Frigidaires!

So there are no original golden agitators, unless we all start chain smoking ciggies again? How nuts is this: the most beautiful pulsator is a tobacco side effect!

Hate to sound so naive, but are you guys serious about the nicotine? It stands to reason but who the hell would have that much smoke in their house to do that to an agitator?

You should have seen the rest of the house. Yes there was that much nicotine everywhere, she smoked to death. Her husband died in WWII and she never remarried or had children, that's why these are such low use machines. I'll put up a picture of just how much lint I cleaned out of the dryer, and BTW these dryers are famous for collecting lint. She did "undies in sundies" only!

She had a nephew and a niece who cared for her and inherited the estate. When I came on the scene it looked as if the investment guy had run off with the cash and the estate was strapped. So they took my offer gladly, what was nice was after I got there it turned out the investment guy did not run off with the cash so the nephew and niece got it and the house was sold just after I left. The house was a complete gut or better tear down. The white walls were the color of the agitator!! My friend Phyllis had to step outside for air frequently!

but for me, the gold pulsator has been the mystery and the prize of 2011. When, oh when, will we get the truth?

I'd go back to the crate in a second to get the REAL story.Wink

Okay, I'll go for it:

mickeyd's profile picture

Look closely at the pulsator. It is perfect. There is no patch, no smear, no line, but totally uniform gold. How is this possible, unless the lid were kept open, the washer never used, and smoke being blown constantly into the machine from all sides with the same force. Now how is that possible?

But Jon sounds sincere in his explanation. What if ciggie smoke is indeed so powerful that it can perfectly dye alien gray rubber into a flawless stunning gold? Why would he keep the truth from us? If in fact he manufactured or somehow procured a golden agitator, wouldn't he admit it so that he would then become more powerful than even Mother Superior, Sister John Combo, herself.

GOLDEN AGITATORS

combo52's profile picture

You guys are just to much, but this is just a secret that Mickeyd and I know about but when my 1957 control tower pair come back from Smittys shop in gleaming charcoal they will have turquoise rubber agitator parts. After all Mother Superior has a big reputation to uphold here and will NOT be outdone.

Okay Mikeyd here's the money shot

jetcone's profile picture

you've been waiting for. And don't listen to Mother Superior, turquoise was NOT  a '57 Color!! And she can have Smitty gussy up her machines with all the charcoal paint he can muster, still won't be PORCELAIN!!!

It's 20 to 12 here and that's what I'm doing. The tub is spectacular, and yes Jon I see some gray peeking out of the gold. Amazing what nicotine (sp) can do.

I have a turquoise penis.

The Clue

mickeyd's profile picture

Jon gave the "clue" away when he posted the miracle shot in #87 which he has kept secret for so long because it shows the gray coming thru the nicotine stain. But I could be the Monkey's Uncle here--all wrong; it's happened before.

coming in late for the party, that left long ago here - what a set! These are remarkable...and so rare, lucky you. Whatever you did to get them to this condition or working as new, congratulations.

You will all get a good laugh from this - but I knew they were washer and dryer, but I wasn't SURE. LOL.

That color was so far ahead of its time, and design...it's fun discovering all the washers and dryers I never knew about...thanks Jetcone. Wow.
