Maytag Dependable Care Washer acquisition |

Today I picked up a late 1990s Maytag Dependable Care machine for use as a daily driver in the co-op apartment building that I live in and manage. It replaces a 2004 Whirlpool machine that needed it's third transmission & clutch and finally gave up the ghost by shredding the motor coupling on Monday evening.
I still may putz around with the whirlpool at some point but I found this Maytag LAT8816AAE on Craig's list that had recently had its tub bearing and seal replaced by a local repair shop. Here's the console:

I'm a little bit unclear about the model number. LAT8816AAE seems unusual to me.
Is it possible that this was a model number that was a special "in-house" number to Sears or Lowe's or the like? For my money, it looks exactly like a LAT9806AAE. Somewhere along the line, it would appear that an unfortunate substitution was made...

The "Extra Spin" adds two additional minutes of spin time to the final spin of each cycle.
That means that the regular cycle gets 6 minutes of spin after the "2-minute drain & spray" increment and PP and Delicates get 4 minutes after the "Drain & Spray". I was impressed by the thriftiness of the PP "Cool-Down" phase. It would appear that it spin drains for about 1 minute on high speed, then the cold water valve opens and sprays for another minute while it finishes draining and starts to spin. At the end of two minutes it stops spinning and simply fills full of cold water for the deep rinse. Here's a pic of the timer dial.

Outlawed?
Maytag used this particular black agitator in their "commercial" washers until they stopped production of the "Newton" machines. I know for certain that production of home machines ceased at the Newton plant in Dec. of 2006. IIRC I think that the commercial machines based on the "Newton" platform may have been produced for a while longer elsewhere, but there are others out there who could say for certain. | ||
