But the "estate sale Marys" are going to be all over this one.
Much of the stuff shown is right out of the 1940's and before, quite allot of it in decent enough condition as well. It looks as if the Roper range and Maytag washer along with those industrial tools are in some sort of "farm house" or perhaps shed/garage type structure. Then again it could be a cellar or basement but one wonders how anyone got that stove down any flight of stairs. Hmmm, Saddle Brook is actually closer than Ridgewood! *LOL* It's all Bergen county anyway. |

And---how they got the stove down the stairs-when someone buys it---how to get it BACK up the stairs! |

No one who knows about wringer washers would have left the wringer extended out to the side like that. Unless the tub is full of water, it makes the machine unstable and tippy. |

My guess is that is how whomever took the pictures "staged" things. As it looks rather clean maybe the washer was off in corner or elsehwere on the property and moved about to get a clearer shot.
Then again considering so much of the vintage items at this estate sale mayhaps the previous owner was using the thing right up until her or his demise. |

Maybe need to borrow Violet's Mercedes and take a trip across the GWB.
@BrianL - Had no idea you rolled with Big Money, living in Saddle Brook!*LOL* Will have to invite you to one of my candlelight suppers! *LOL* Several new pictures have been uploaded and that estate is a gold mine of vintage items for the right person/collector. There is a lovely infant's crib and "mammie" rag doll. More pictures but must say some things simply don't "fit" the rest of the house. The company does promise to keep trying to sell remaining items even after a sale is over so perhaps these items and or pictures are leftovers. |

That is what comes to mind looking at those photographs of items for sale.
Yes, the former owner or owners of that home were elderly. You can tell from the B&W pictures of Armed Forces members in boxes along with other family snaps. Also simply by looking at the stuff. The Koolerator, wringer washer, Easy Spindrier, vintage radio and television and so forth all point to someone or persons who started keeping house around the 1940's or 1950's. Judging from that Roper range maybe even before that. Does not look like their days ended happily as you can see the potty chair/walker in one snap. Also from the state of the place it obviously had not been kept up. Often elderly persons living in these "wealthy" New Jersey suburbs are house poor. Many of these "bedroom" areas became hot areas to settle in after the George Washington Bridge was built, and increasingly as more persons fled NYC for Jersey after the War and on into the 1950's (white flight). Over the years assesements on the property goes up but many seniors income does not. Judging from the hat boxes and costume jewels the lady of the house had good taste. Don't think they had two laundry rooms. Just as each machine either died or was replaced it was moved into storage. The kitchen has a modern new range so am going to guess there is a "new" washer and dryer somewhere. One thing that really makes one sad is the absence of any infant/children's items speaks that perhaps there weren't any wee ones. |

Funny what you posted yesterday, I would never lol. I hear what you are saying on your last post, I knew a few like that. The housing prices go up, but the incomes do not. Money is tight with us as well. I think the average income is around 60k or more perhaps. We happened to luck out, but are house is less than 1500 sq ft, and built with sheet rock on cement. Makes for a warm house in summer and a cold house in winter. Virtually no insulation. Since our bills are higher, I wonder what a senior might have to go through on a fixed income like that.
Back to washers, I really would love to have that Easy, as I need to give Eric's back to him eventually lol, but I'm not sure about the wringer. Maybe if the price is right on it, unless someone else wants. Seriously though, any members in the area, I would love to get to meet new people and show them my collection and maybe make a little day of it. |

Quick peek at Google Maps shows the property is just off Route #46, easy as pie to get to if one is anywhere near northern New Jersey or central for that matter.
OTHO not all pictures shown on the estate sale's website are from this particular do, can't be, but long as the stuff is there who cares? As for the larger appliances (washer, Roper range, etc...), Google Maps shows a small shed/garage structure at the back of the property, but it looks too modern and small to hold all the stuff shown in various estate sale pictures. Given that the house was built in 1932 that stonework seen in the background *may* very well be the home's foundation. In which case all that stuff is in the basement/cellar and would have to be hauled up and out of the house by either the front or back door. Besides just cannot imagine anyone storing (or using for that matter) those washing machines in a garage given NJ's winter climate). Though the property is quite big (largest on that side of the block from what one can see), the house is small as with most in that area. If it get's crowded (and it very well may given it's a built up area and local residents are bound to wander in), things will be tight. My advice for anyone thinking of going is to do so early and perhaps on Saturday for best selection and "quiet" shopping. |

Sellers make a big deal on their website about how hard they work to get the best prices for their clients and so forth.
Being as that may cannot see anyone spending >$100 for those appliances much less >$200. Sale only runs two days and then what happens to the *stock* is anyone's guess. If you live in the area I'd stroll over and make your best offer and see what happens. If those washers don't move by Sunday afternoon (and am guessing they won't)seller might see the light. |

As for myself though the spirit was willing the flesh was weak. Twas a cold morning with light snow and ice falling which did not inspire one to drive out into NJ. Besides given how much BrianL reported the sellers wanted for the washers one had the feeling bargins may have been few and far between.

As luck would have it there was an article in last weekend's WSJ about dealing with the estate of a deceased loved one and using liquidators.
Most if not all such persons running these sort of sales work on a percentage of total receipts. Thus the more things fetch the more they make. Cannot imagine how anyone got that range into the basement (but glad to see one's hunch was correct), much less the washers. Unless there is some sort of door directly to the cellar it's going to be quite a *haul* to get those items up and out. Am guessing at one point the range came apart for shipping/installation, but after sitting unused and rusting away in that basement getting it apart without damage is going to be no easy feat. |

Also made a swing past this weekend. There is a side door about halfway up the basement stairs. It'd be hard nut not impossible to get the stove out.
I saw no evidence of automatics... Both washers looked as if they'd not been used for a while. Wanted $95 for the Mixmaster, which I declined. Sheesh. Also, basement was MOLD CITY. |

As per website.
Anyone who wants either of those washers or (what ever for?) the range should IMHO contact the liquidators and state your case up front; as a seasoned appliance collector and restoration person you are highly placed to give *your* estimate of value and are willing to pay "X" max. Furthermore if they want the stuff moved simply agree and you will arrive with funds and the required equipment to shift the stuff. End of story. While the Mixmaster and other household contents can be packed into boxes and shifted about for offering at other sales or even on eBay those mouldering appliances aren't going any where. The only persons willing to pay $200 or whatever insane price these people are asking are scrappers, and even they try to get things for free or on the cheap. As Grand-mama used to say " a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing". Mind you if one goes this route then you have to man-up and follow through. And please don't all and sundry go running over to the seller and tell her/him about his site...... That's how people get an idea into their head that the tired old tat in their basement or shed is a goldmine to begin with. *LOL* |

Well either the elderly couple or persons living in that house sent their laundry out or a family member/estate liquidator got shot of the *good* stuff before the sale.
Cannot imagine anyone that on in years using either of those washers, especially with evidence of a walker/potty chair in the background. *LOL* Again there is a modern range shown in one of the kitchen photographs so it's not like they were totally living in the 1940's. Wonder if the two sewing machines sold? |
