Marion, the dishwasher people are going to go nuts when they see this. I couldn't figure out what was going on with the top......half wood? half silver, till I looked closely at the cycle buttons. This baby is loaded. And a SUPER WASH just like the WP washing machines.
You've got a really rare gem on your hands. Gentle wash--how neat. And the front shot is very handsome, nice wide chrome head and white slender body. And FREE. Welcome to Automatic Washer.
You sure have arrived with a splash. |

The days of serving Hot Food on Hot Plates !!!
First of all Marion (and I love your name) I bought my Mom a similar machine in 1970. It was a Mark IV. It had the Super Wash etc. as yours does except ours was a built in so No Food Warmer. But the best thing about your machine is that Food Warmer Plate. Never saw your Model but I'm not surprised. We have on the threads in Super Forum a Tappan Range that has a Food Warmer on a Overhead Shelf. Crazy that you my dear show up with a dishwasher with the same feature. Isn't it just facinating how the Designers came up with all the unique ideas, while today's appliances are sooooo mundane and can hardly live up to their expectations. Our Whirlpool DW could make anything Shine like the top of the Chrysler Building.
Great Machine. Hold on to it unless anyone here would take it and preserve it. |

Those racks are in great shape. Not sure if I see a couple of rust spots on the lower one. You can easily apply plastisol repair to any rusted areas on the racks. Finding it in the right shade of blue will not be so easy. The only blue rack repair I've found is Maytag brand, and it's very blue. These days, most stores carry only white and gray. |

My neighbors had a similar model when I was a kid. I was intrigued with the upper rack rollers on top of the rail and of course the "In the door" silverware basket. I always wondered how efficient the spray from the lower spray arm would pass through a 3 inch tube at that distance to properly feed the upper spray arm. I would love to see this machine run with a plexiglass cover so we could watch it work. Great find, Bob...

Oh too cool, Marion! I love the idea of the built-in food warmer on the dishwasher top. Talk about convenience - use the dishwasher top as a serving counter in the dining room, load up the dirty dishes, then roll the machine to the sink for the wash cycle!!
I briefly had a Canadian variation of this one - an Inglis Royal 100 with the rapid advance timer. A fellow turquoise fan here in Montreal has it now.
If you need a user's manual I have the Inglis version if that helps (I'll send you the English version, not the French one... LOL)
Phil - you're right - the SWP90 Whirlpool is the 'American Cousin' of that Inglis Royal top-loader you found and saved for me last summer!!
Thanks for the pictures, Peter - they are always appreciated!!

Echoing Paul, Pete the scans are fabulous. A real two speed machine--News to me, amazing! Marion can play with the buttons and hear the wonder of the up and down of whoosh-shoosh speeds.
On my BOL WP portable model from the 80's there are two full spray arms but no tube. Instead, the water juste shoots up from a hole in the middle of the bottom arm. It would be really cool to watch that water jump up to the second wash arm.
Ad Underkill for a change. If I had made the ad, the prime rib would indeed be on the carving board, but the warming board would be full of steaming delicious side dishes: roasted brussel sprouts, roasted sliced sweet potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding--this one because I've never had it and always wanted to. I wonder what it tastes like. |

It's in use because the built-in Tappan is experiencing door latch difficulties. Member John Combo is going to help me fix it. the Whirlpool is so fast and so tolerant of any loading pattern, with wider columns in the left side and back for most bowls and frying pans, etc.
Here's open rubber rimmed valve for shooting water up to the top arm. |

Hi Mike there is supposed to be a stationary tube attached to the lower rack that the rubber cap on the lower wash arm swells and seals against in order to force water into the top wash arm, are you saying that yours does not have this ? Smitty has this DW in his house in the BI version, it came with his new house in 1990 and does a great job and has never had a single repair. |

The older machines that had a plastic cap in the center of the lower wash arm did not have a water feed tube, they just had a guard like Marion's has to help keep you from loading dishes in the center of the lower rack. All the machines with the expandable rubber doughnut in the center of the lower arm have a stationary plastic feed tube attached to the lower rack to channel the water into a funnel attached to the bottom of the upper wash arm. Mike I have lots of these tubes laying around i you want me to send you one. |

Sorry for the confusion. In the middle of the lower rack is a light blue tower about 8 inches high, a tapered plastic mountain or volcano, wide at the bottom and tapering thin, with two plastic fins also tapering, east and west, almost like an agitator, really. How DID I miss it? Probably with the bottom rack pulled out looking all over for tubes and connectors. |

Did Whirlpool really have a dishwasher with a motor that had two speeds?I have never heard of that at all with old machines that is. My L.G. has variable speeds but I would not call it a dishwasher at all more of a plate wetter but that is about it. Most the old dishwashers for china cycle did just cut the time short that is it.That is a neat dishwasher wish I could find one and a Whirlpool disposer also that is one thing I have never seen..Thanks for the pics. |

They did have a reduced water pressure on the Crystal and China cycle but they they did not have a 2SP motor, rather they did it by aerating the water circulation of the main wash pump. On the late 60s models they had a solenoid valve that opened to allow air to enter the wash pump intake { GE also did this on some TOL models around this time, only they opened a little rubber tube directly via the push-button cycle selector that allowed air in ] and when WP changed to the Delco Turbo pump around 1970 they just used a lower fill level which caused the water to aerate. |
