all i found was a motor shaft that goes down thru a rubber like boot about 1/2 inch thick and then into the top bearing of the motor! it doesn't look like anything could be replaced even if i could find a new part.
the only other pumps i have seen use these rubber boot like seals are on small drain pumps used on dishwashers and washers. i never expected the main pump on this dishwasher to use this type seal. had i have known this i probably would not have bought this machine because when i put it all back together and tried it out it leaks badly!!! |

machine that couldn't!
0) i can pitch it and beat myself up for buying it! (not a good option but i have thought of that today). 1) i can keep it and never run it! 2) i can run the hell out of it and let it leak until it fries the motor! then i can keep it and not run it! 3) i have an idea! i have already gotten in my head how to rig it up with a g.e. potscrubber horizontal motor and pump, discarding this pump and motor altogether. for now i am going to back off for awhile, probably a few months and then come back to it later. if i go the g.e. pump route it will give me time to perfect it in my head before actually doing it. it would be such a fun dishwasher to actually use on a daily basis, what with it's size and all! perfect for me! in the meantime if anyone knows who made it or if anyone has any ideas on how to fix it's pump seal area please let me know! for those of you on the site who like lookin at this type of thread, enjoy! |

Bizarre! What a fun dishwasher, Japanese made - perhaps Hitachi or Sanyo? Love the smaller size, hopefully you can find parts or make it work. Would love to see that spray arm & tube in action. I'll check my Wards books this weekend and see if I can find the source code information on who made this. UTJ in the model number will signify the manufacturer.

The racks look somewhat reminicent of Fridgidaire. The design of the Spray Arms look somewhat like GE (except the jets are not wide enough if you know what I mean) The pump definately looks GE'ish.... Humphhhhhh...... Still cute and yup the Magic Marker has to go. Looks like a sign at the Market to alert something on sale. |

The top rack looks very Frigidaire-ish, as does the cover on the detergent dispenser. |

wow, haven't seen one of those in ages!-parents bought one at a rummage sale about 1983-worked well enough but was quite loud, even the timer motor was loud-making a grind-grind-grind noise...Looked like a 1973 date code on the valve. |

That hose clamp type is pretty common for automotive use. To install and tighten easily there are special tools, otherwise you can use a very small flat bladed screwdriver. |

tips, info, and advice. i will try nail polish remover on that magic marker writing on the door.
i took some close ups of the seal itself. here they are. it is definately a lip on the top of the seal that snugs against the motor shaft to keep water from leaking. there is a no. on the seal, evident in one pic here at least. it is (y 10 25 13.8 15) not that i have any idea what that signifies! i used wd 40 on that lip and my finger to push it in and back and maybe soften it up to where it might seal again. just a long shot but worth a try. i also cleaned the motor shaft where it mates with that sealing lip with wd 40 and a cloth to make sure it is perfectly clean. the shaft is stainless steel. i will put it back one more time and try it out. i can have it all back on the machine in 20 minutes, very easy pump to assemble. again thanks for the info and tips, if anyone does know anything about these seals, their name, or where to get them please feel free to pass on the advice! |

and spring, just that rubber lip that grabs the motor shaft.
BUT I AM AMZED! IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!!!! I PUT IT ALL BACK TOGETHER TODAY AFTER GENTLY MASSAGING THAT SEAL WITH A GOOD DOSE OF WD-40 AND DECIDED TO TRY IT OUT!!!!! NO LEAKS AROUND THE MOTOR ANYWHERE!!!!!!! here are some pics! here it is filling up with the door open. water comes in at top of back wall in middle. it fills higher than i thought it would. |

with a really loud click. you have to pull out on timer knob to start dishwasher and every time you open door you have to pull it out again once door is locked.
the beginning of the cycle starts with the white mark on the timer dial at the top position. the position of the timer in this pic (where the lady wrote "start" in black marker) is at the fill for the main 10 min wash. i am timing a cycle now. drains are 1 min long fills are 1 min long. rinse (or wash) 8.5 min. rinse 1 min. main wash 10 min. rinse 1 min. rinse 1 min. rinse 1 min. dry not timed yet. |

lite that illuminates when the cycle is running.
will have to get some model airplane paint and tint some appliance touch up epoxy paint to get rid of that rusty area under lite. and i'm going to get some nail polish remover (as suggested above) to try and get that magic marker writing off the door! it ruins it! but hey. just yesterday i thought it wouldn't run without leaking! so i can't complain!!! don't think i've been this excited over a dishwasher in a long time! |

the custom cycle add ons before nail polish remover. Might work and be less likely to bother the paint..... |

draining into my home made drain tub made from a home depot "homer" bucket with a pvc drain attached to the bottom and garden hose attached to that. this way i can run any portable no matter where i am.
i got the adapter to connect a faucet quick connect to a garden hose at home depot also (i work there). the faucet connector for this dishwasher does not leak a drop! |

are like new! not a scratch on them!
the tub and door are metal with some type plastic coating on it. but like the old g.e. tubs or the old frigidaire dishmobiles. this is different from anything i have ever seen. water inlet to tub is that black hole in back center. air vent is at upper left on back wall. |

a smashing success!!!!!!! in spite of my problems yesterday. maybe the seal just needed to be moistened up and run to seal properly again. no telling how long it has set dry.
def worth the 3 hour drive and 75 bucks for! FINAL QUESTION AND I'LL SHUT UP ABOUT THIS LITTLE DISHWASHER THAT COULD. IF I USE IT ON A SEMI REG. BASIS DO YOU THINK THAT DISHWASHER DETERGENTS WILL CORRODE THE SEAL OVER TIME? now that it doesn't leak i don't want to hurt the seal by exposing it to harsh chemicals. but i do think it will be good for it to run periodically to keep that seal moist! thanks again to all for your tips, advice, and comments!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (oh yea, the dry is about 24 min. long on the cycle). |

am going to run it with a load of disrty dishes "electronicontri" as i don't want to wear out that seal. am afraid that dishwasher detergent and dirty water from food might not be good for it. plan on running it empty with hot water on a semi reg basis to keep seal moist.
"tomturbomatic" not sure how durable it is. does seem to move a lot of water inside from the sound of it and i i like the fact that it has a 10 min main wash and a 8.5 min prewash and 3 final rinses but again i think that seal is it's weak point. i did clean the interior of the tub with some bon ami and all water marks removed completely. now it really looks like new! |

Is probably the worst thing you can do to ANY DW, detergent and food oils help lubricate the seal and other vital parts of DWs. We have noticed that folks that per-rinse their dishes usually cut the life of the DW in half. Every thing needs to be done in moderation and with common sense, but no detergent can be as bad as too much, this is why you should always put some detergent in the first detergent cup when you run a full cycle in almost any DW. |

combo52, i had no idea plain water would be worse than dirty dishwater with detergent in it. makes sense about the oils and fats from the food but i would think detergents would be a corrosive element on the rubber. but if you say so, you are wiser than i am for sure when it comes to this kind of info! i will take your advice and actually run it with some dishes!
garyl, is that appliance store the one in california? tried to look it up on the web tonite. thanks for the info. i had never noticed the "made in japan" on the name tag before. was too busy getting it tore down and back together and praying it wouldn't leak! |

I too was very fascinated when I first saw one of these DWs in a customers house back in the late 1970s and thought it would be very cool to have one. It was differently Made In Japan and as many of you have said it looks like they borrowed some design elements from GM built DWs of the time, and of coerce MWs DWs were being built by GM during the 1970s when this machine has built.
I finely found one of these rare machines in the 1980s and when I got a closer look at it [ It was also in pretty bad condition ] I scrapped it. It like many things Made In Japan in an earlier time was simply a copy of American technology done badly. But I do think that it is great you found one Peter and shared it with us as otherwise it may have been forever forgotten in the history of major appliances.
Thanks again for sharing this with us, great memories. |
