I saw a preview of a new reality show called, "My Crazy Obsession," and I thought I saw one of the members here on it - am I right? This individual has a room full of vintage washers and dryers, and there was a very early model Fridgidaire washer pulsading.

Given that so many of us are overseas, it would be fantastic to see the show....

Any chance you could record it and edit it for a clip on here?

I second Ron's request.

I don't get TLC and would like to see the part with Robert and Fred in it.

Unfortunately I wont be able to do that as that would be considered copyright infringement. For more information on the copyright issue please see the current thread in the ATT forum.

I saw that commercial too!

My partner and I were watching the tube and the commercial came on, and we were giggling at the "nuttiness" of the "pink lady". Thinking that she must be nutty.

Well...then you guys show up, and I say...OMG I've see that basement before (in pics). I then quickly backtrack and say "I guess the pink lady isn't so nutty!"

Both had a chuckle.

Hi Doug. Hope this helps.

As far as I know, people are seeing the preview while watching TLC, The Learning Channel, on the tube--TV--not Youtube. I hope you get the channel, and then maybe you'll catch the preview. I've heard it's very brief, a shot of Robert and Fred, and the 49 Frigidaire. Haven't seen it myself. Excited for the real deal when it comes, some time around March 7th.

The Airdate.........

revvinkevin's profile picture

Per Roberts suggestion (from the other thread) I recorded a few hours of TLC over the weekend. I did see the specific preview he was referring to. Yes I agree the "Pink lady" has to be a little "off".

Anyway, at the end of the preview it showed the airdate as "March 7 at 10 PM" (pacific time).

I hope this helps!

Robert said in his first response above that he'd let us know the air date. Out of respect for him, I'm saying around the 7th, which is when the series begins. I'm sure he'd let us know if the airing date were certain. We don't know if his segment will be featured in the first episode.

They may NOT be featured in the first episode....

I guess we'll just have to watch the other "crazies" until their segment airs and we can see exactly how normal Robert & Fred really are! (meaning very normal)

Love it

I am in DC for work and have a dinner appointment with a great client, she replies to my email "Word to your Maytag" to confirm we are meeting, and then at dinner she mentions the clip from TLC and wants to watch it when it airs.

I just love this obsession we all share, the support at AW.ORG and having friends that dig it too!

I don't know the exact tipology of things and way they show or talk about in this tv program but by the program name and something I can see on the web sounds like there they talks in a sarcastic and documentary way showing some sort of scary maniacal obsessive weirdos freaks........ I may be wrong but if so I personally would not join a thing like this as I think that being an appliance lover and collector is a normal thing, like those who loves and collect cars, motorcycles...etc...and not at all related to such madness they probably talks about in that program.....I'll make an example, they're talking about a mental lady I've seen on the program website that turns everything pink, the walls, the phone, the table, THE CAT! THE MILK SHE IS DRINKING IS PINK!!! Everything!
I personally would not appear in a such program...I would not see why as I don't see why Robert is....this is what I personally think.
Anyway I'm happy for Robert if he is happy so.

We had heard that Doris Mayday the 50's woman from the show works in a store at the Mall of America, so we went there to meet her over the weekend.  She is an absolutely delightful, beautiful, intelligent young woman.

I asked her about her appliances and she told me that she is renting that house, so she doesn't have the option to change the appliances at this time.  She did say she would much rather have vintage appliances and will someday.  Now that she know's us, she'll have connections to say the least :-).

Yes Robert it is on tlc.com i check it regularly to see if ur and freds episode is going to be on the next week (:. But after last nights episodes at 10:00 and 10:30 p.m. they showed what was goin to be on next weeks episode and it said the season finally. For next weeks episodes the preview on tv didnt show ur eopisode but it showed a ladie who collected newborn baby dolls and a ladie who was obsessed with the worlds largest rodent and she had 1 lol. There r usually 2 collectors per episode and there r 2 a week back to back. So thats when i checked the web site 2 make sure ur episode was goin to be on next week, i was sure it was since it was the "season finally". They saved the best episode 4 last. (=

As far as we been told, it should be on at 9pm central time/10pm eastern, then I believe they repeat it at 10/11 or within an hour two after that.

We were told we were going to be in the 9pm show, but for all we know we might have been bumped to 9:30pm.  If I hear anything more I will let everyone know.

The Time Warner schedule reads: "Spin Cycle--Fred and Robert have their vintage collection of washing machines" Then the doll stuff

They gave you a cool title, but they put Fred first. "HEY, wait, those washers...... Yell " I'm sure you don't mind. CoolThis is going to be amazing. The excitement and anticipation build.

What about the Harmony?

That's all part of their editing, lol. The music sounds like its trying to push the crazy angle, but I suspect since we are both reasonably well spoken, that will override their attempts at "crazy" somewhat. I use the word "somewhat" because you have to consider TLCs audience.

Robert, a good rant about an ex would be right up the alley of much of the Loser Channel's Audience. While you are in mid rant, they could edit the lighting to make it look like Samantha was making the lights pulse. Younger audience members would think you were like Harry Potter just before he inflated that aunt.

I hope you made a pitch for combos; not that they are worth a lot of money, but that they need to be included in a museum collection instead of being allowed to rust away in a barn. There are still people like someone I was talking with last week who have never heard of combos. Can you imagine if after watching this program, people start wanting combos and force manufacturers to make them, and not those sh***y LG things?

I liked the show Robert and Fred, though I wish they had spent just a few more minutes on the vacuums (ducks and runs!). I don't however think of it as an obsession any more than other collectors who collect other things. Nice job, guys!

Very fun!!! Why do you think the washers upstaged the vacuums? Did they do vacuum collecting on a previous show?

So excellent!!! Congrats!!!

Congratulations Robert and Fred!

I just finished watching the segment of the show that featured you.

One question, though. You mentioned that the production crew went around your collection covering up logos on the machine. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Apex, Philco, Frigidaire, General Electric, Hoover and Sunbeam logos, among others, appear onscreen, as well as hearing you talk about the various brands.

Did the production crew, or TLC, have a change of heart about mentioning and featuring the various brands on the finished program?

Absolutely fabulous!

Robert and Fred,
What a great show and have to say they should have devoted the whole program to you two guys! This was the first time I had actually seen just how extensive your WHOLE collection truly is!.
I think it is time for Modern Marvels to showcase these appliances and have you guys do the whole show!

Even my wife was smiling while watching it.. She especially liked the part about softening Jeans. She cant get them saoft enough for my son with Autism to be comfortable in his jeans. But then again, we have a Duet! LOL.
Now I may have my opportunity to search out another Top Loader..
Eddie.. did you leave yet? Maybe the Tag pair will be okay to bring down now!

Thanks again you two guys.. made much more than my day and well worth the wait to finally catch it.

You guys did great!  And what sets you apart from others on this series is that the things you collect actually serve a useful household purpose.   I'm glad they showed you getting your fingernails dirty.

No doubt that tricked-out appliance dolly is worth its weight in gold!

In such a vast wasteland, your segment runs away with the title, "TV worth watching!"  Congratulations!

Overall not bad, I figured that they would go after the monetary aspects to try and make us appear crazy. Certainly didn't mention that I made back the cost of the collections between having the washers in the Hollywood movie rentals and from when LG's law firm hired me to help them fight the patent litigation suites that Whirlpool filed against LG. They did cover a lot of logos, but others we're left wide open. They completley blurred out the Maytag Man, but left other logos intact. It would be hard as our house is sea of logos.

But all in all I'm glad we did it. They didn't mention the importance of creating the web site, but maybe that's better for the site.

Now its time to go and watch it again.

Wow!!!!!!

Robert and Fred, you two presented your hobby  with style and grace.  I just finished and plan to watch again after this post.  TLC, covered a lot of machines with the time limitations of the segment.  You Both looked very handsome and buffed.  I am glad that they mentioned how rare it is to find  a vintage machine, and that it may not be worth thousands of dollars.  You guys  hit  it out of the  park.  arthur

Shiny,Clean,& Bright...

Saw the show tonight & ALL the appliances were displayed nicely in a clean, inviting setting. Both guys were fun to listen to,but Robert was a tad more engaging washer spokesperson. Glad the show came off so well.
Maybe,if we put our collective machine love/abilities & some cash together,we could creat a new 'Classic' set of machines. Someones doing it with "Retro" stoves & refrigerators,so I think theres a market. Be something to charge $1000+ for a mid 60's WP/KM type flashy machine modded with a slightly higher spin speed & a shock absorber or 3. Probably get a 'Energy Saver' exemption as a low volumn producer. Wouldn't it be Great!

You come across as sane compared to the others. I never realized how similar you fellows looked until you're side by side...It's a matched set, like a washer and dryer. (Never heard that one before, have you? coff coff).

Considering how easy it would have been to make this seem weird, it really wasn't too bad. Good ambassadors, well done.

absolutely! The next episode featured a woman with some type of animal that is not your typical household pet...then they featured the Pet Psychic Paula interpreting what that animal's stress was...I'll tell you...the animal doesn't want to sleep in her bed!!! (which is what the owner wants the pet to do)...personally I don't care for the music they use which sounded kind of odd and sad...our 'obsession' is GOOD, CLEAN FUN!!!

***commences rolling eyes***, lol. Well what ever do you mean Jon? Isn't that funny that for the first time ever a Unimatic leaks water directly from its water seal, totally misses the transmission and ends up on the floor? Wasn't that amazing that TV cameras were there to capture this never ever before happened, once in a million year event. I'd guess I'd have to say that it was a miracle ;-).

And don't think I didn't see that "nice suds" comment either-mister!

Fabulous!!

I thought the show was excellent, guys. Regardless of any efforts they may have made, you came off as perfectly normal people. I'm sure they edited it down to bare bones. I wish they could have spent several episodes...because there is SO much more that goes into this. The knowledge alone that you and other collectors/restorers here on this site have is immense and priceless. They can spend hours on people and their cars...talking about design, and motors, and horsepower, etc. But...they just don't get it with these vintage appliances; yet, it's actually the same exact thing. The automakers themselves made many of these appliances...so you know the engineering was there. Some of these washing machines from the 40s, 50s and 60s are real feats of engineering that couldn't be accomplished today at anywhere near the same cost even when accounting for inflation. The genius of some of the mechanisms with their pure simplicity or their enormous complexity is every bit as noteworthy as any driving machine. The designs and imagination involved were simply amazing as well, not to mention the marketing. All that went into making these appliances is gone...and it was a real part of Americana...but people don't seem to see this. Kudos to you both!!

Michael

Great job, boys! I thoroughly enjoyed the show and you both explained alot about the fun of vintage appliances by talking about the design history and the overall mindset of post-war American appliance manufacturers like GM.

When that water poured out from under the 50 unimatic I thought "this can't be real. They staged that so Fred could demonstrate his 63 vac". LOL.

Several of the machines got a lot of good camera time. I think the cutest part was Robert imitating the mechanical sounds of the different cycles. I did that as a kid too.

Wonderful and funny--laughed out loud 3 times at your unexpected jokes. They only trick they pulled was making it look like you said washers were sexy, when in fact you were answering their question which they edited out. So you had them outed, tellling us about this suspicious question, before they even knew you were on to them. Smart, smart smart.

Favorite things:

The true-to-ad-hype shampooing Kelvinator, "Now that's the way to wash clothes."

Your washer sound ventriloquy and your dad not appreciating the flat tire threat

"I haven't had polio once"

Fred coming to the rescue with the wet vac

The glory of the parade of washers agitating with and without clothes at hi & low levels--and dry!

The spectacular insides of the Lady K

The warm hug -- a perfect visual "The End."

How did they stage the trip to Wisconsin within the 2 day schedule?

The woman that was the animal communicator is Sonya Fitzpatrick. She lives in my area and we see her on occasion about town and in the grocery store. Let me tell you, that woman is all about the money. Once we saw her and had a very short chat with her. I told her that we had watched her television show (She had on TV a few years ago) and all she said was "Thank you for watching, my fee is $300.00 for 30 minutes of my time", send me an e-mail to make an appointment." and she moved on.

$300 for 30 minutes of WHAT, exactly? I got the feeling she purports to be a Dr. Doolittle. Sorry, Sonya, I ain't biting. What's the P. T. Barnum line? Oh, yeah, "There's one born every minute."

I've got to say, we the appliance collectors came off looking a whole lot more sane than the rest of that gang. Thank you, Fred and Robert!

Watching the stark black pulsator making blue suds after you carefully scattered the Cheer was really cool; it was like magic, and the blue and green towels were perfect--excellent color compostion of the loads all around! Is the 55 your pet, or was it just its position in the line-up that had you feature it so many times.

Whoops, I was waiting for someone to find that post lol. I warned the producers against staging stuff with the washers because people on automaticwasher know my collection and are way too smart to be fooled. Consider what we did a "recreation" of my finding that washer last year. The price was the same, it was in a garage, just the people and city/state were different. But it was a pretty good recreation I thought.

So then "the leak" was staged too... hmmm.... what "they" will do for television!   Cool

I really enjoyed the "spin cycle" segment and thought it was very well done!   I told some co-workers and friends about the show who I am "out of the appliance closet" to and they planned to watch it.   I've hear back from a few and they really liked the segment, your collections and your house.   I even saw a vendor today that said "Hey I was watching this show last night and there was this guy with a lot of washing machines..... I thought of you..."

I just wish they would have used more of the footage, showing other items (like the dishwashers) they only briefly showed in the preview.   Too bad they whittled 34 hours of footage down into just a 15 minute segment.

Over all it was really great!   I'm really proud of you guys for agreeing to do this show!

Since it was brought up earlier in the thread.....

Sonya Fitzpatrick claims to be an animal communicator, she claims that she can talk to the animals in a two way communication. She used to come to your home to talk to the animals in person. She charged $100.00 per hour back then. But eventually she had her own show where guests would bring their pets in and she would "talk to them". Usually she would deal with problem pets and find out why they have problems, and they would tell her so she could communicate what they are saying to their owners. And she can also talk to pets that are now "dearly departed" too. That was the last segment on each episode of her television show.

Surprisingly a lot of times the owners would take the advice Sonya would tell them about why their pets are behaving the way they are and the problem would be solved. Sometimes the pets would tell her things that only the owners would know about, like the dog preferred the red dog bed it used to have instead of the new blue one it has now.

After her television show went off the air after one season, she no longer did home visits but does "telephone consultations" where you just point the phone in the direction of your pet and she could hear them communicating with her over the phone for $300.00 per half hour. And she has a ton of people calling her for this service. She lives in a pretty ritzy part of The Woodlands, Texas.

Another thing, she's actually quite old I would imagine around 70 or so and looked every day of it. After her show went off the air she got a Joan Rivers type of facelift. It took years and years off of her looks. But you can easily tell she had a facelift, nothing natural about it at all.

She's appeared on lots of documentary type shows like 20/20, 60 minutes and news shows from all the networks before. On her television show she came across as being a friendly and open person, but when you meet her she's icy cold and only will talk about money.

Do you happen to have a collection of old floor polishers? Remember those upright machines with the twin spin brushes used for hardwood floors? My mother used to use one of those to polish our floors when I was a child.

Washing Machine Noises

This could be the start of a whole new thread. I, too, have a similar car noise story. Our family had a 1962 Impala. The back door arm rests had a small ashtray that had a flip up lid (much like a top loading washer). On long trips, I would entertain myself pretending it was a washing machine. Of course the two most familiar sounding machines for me were the Unimatic and Maytag AMP's. I guess I was doing the Unimatic sound tapping my fingernail on the ashtray lid (in my own little washer world) unaware that dad heard this tap, tap, tap.......... He also thought it was the car. Of course, he made everybody get quiet and listen and the noise stopped -- HOW MYSTERIOUS!

Robert, when you related your story, I couldn't help but laugh about my auto experience. Mom told me many times that I could make all the sounds of the washers, too. I think she still has my drawings from childhood of washing machines with the hoses, power cords, stand pipes or wash tubs.

I enjoyed it, but am disappointed that no time was given to the combos. Is this some kind of male chauvinism with the phallic agitators versus the more uterine front loaders?

I'll bet if the washer had done an oil dump on the floor, Fred would not have been so quick to clean it up with one of his treasures. I watched that leak and thought, "Robert would never let that happen." Just proves there's no business like show business.

Tom - maybe Robert's true colors wave for traditional Top Loaders? Who needs those pesky Combos anyway... :D

Love your story Steve! That is fodder for a whole thread, I have plently lol.

I enjoyed it, but am disappointed that no time was given to the combos.

Remember Tom and everyone, you have to understand that we spent time talking about each machine on camera, including the combos, but it became clear to us that the production company and TLC editors had very little interest in the washers or really anything in the house. They were interested in trying to show that we are somehow crazy because that is what brings in their audience, not what we collect. Had they been honest about what they were up to when it was presented to us we would have never done this. Overall it didn't come out too bad, but much narration was clearly wrong, some could have been by mistake, but most (I suspect) was done on purpose. I can say that because we presented the facts to them in writing.

Among other things the narrator said:

#1 "Robert spends hours every day looking for washer leads on the net for the weekend", that is total and complete BS, I have absolutely no time for that. 10 minutes per week, if that is the truth. I clearly told them in writing that I am a very busy person and the time I get to spend on the actual hobby is minimal on a weekly basis which is true.

#2 "Robert and Fred drive up 1200 miles looking for washing machines". Again total bull, I told them (again in writing) that we go to the estate sales about 45 Saturdays a year and maybe drive 20-25 miles a saturday. I said we're not just looking for washers, anything fun and vintage for the house, plus its a chance to be social with friends. Well it appears they took 25 * 45 and rounded that up to 1200, then they proceeded to twist what I said to their liking.

There were a bunch of other things in the narration that were just like that including the monetary amounts. I plan on making a list of what they said and then provide correct answers and I will share that when I get time.

Robert,

Having been through this for print articles, I know exactly what you are talking about. Only once did we have a writer who was interested in the appliances and that was a great article. The others wanted to write about us and we should not have been the topic of the story. To them, appliances were not as interesting as people. Funny, I feel almost the opposite is true. The writers just have training in writing about people so they have a stock supply of phrases and such. It would take more work on their part to actually write a factual article about appliances because that borders on technical writing.

Y'all did the members here proud in spite of what they were trying to do to you and I thank you again.

I noticed that the narration went with the blanket term of "one of a kind" for every washer you own after you had mentioned the single washer in your collection that could claim that status.

I wasn't surprised by the hype and twisting of truth.  These days, broadcast news is guilty of the same thing, so it wasn't unexpected coming from a TLC show where, as you stated, the focus is on the people more than any specific items in their collections.

1,200 miles?  Yeah, maybe after a decent amount of coordinating and planning, but not on a whim after Saturday breakfast, and I presume that's round trip, not one way.  They appeal to the lowest common denominator in their viewing audience who believe every skewed thing their televisions tell them.

You guys presented very well in spite of their efforts.

and that was on retrorenovation.com, since we're one of the 3 households in the Western World who've never had cable TV... so is there some way to see the whole program on YouTube or somewhere? The trailer was absolutely totally great!!

With so many people watching TLC I wonder if this will up the prices on Craigslist?

I doubt it because they never mentioned any fact that there is anyone out there besides me who collects washers.  I told them specifically that $125 for a vintage washers was more than the average of the price of vintage machines.  I told them the average is around $75.  Of course unfortunately they didn't present it this way, but again nothing was mentioned about a group of people who buy these machines.  I also suspect that TLC's audience is not the kind of people who generally will have this kind of older stuff anyway.  From what I can tell from googling around, TLC base seems to be younger women in the 20-40 age range.

Well, you guys didn't come off as being TOO crazy... :-)

It's probably a good thing they didn't know about me back in the early 2000's...

I used to have a large vintage computer collection. Anything from 1978 straight through to 1982 was pretty much on shelves in my living room. I think at one point in time I think I was up to about 28 computers...

I had vintage IBM and Compaq machines and even oddball Digital 286/386 machines. I had to draw the line when someone offered me a DEC PDP-11/70. I just got rid of an older Decwriter III not that long ago.

Sadly, my love of vintage computers has seriously diminished and most of the stuff I've had either went to the scrap heap or it ended up on EBay.

Now, most of the machines I have are not collectable at all.

You have an amazing collection Robert.. I envy it! :)

Hey Robert & Fred . . .

. . . Thanks bunches for putting the video of My Crazy Obsession on the AW site. I have just watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. You both look great and all your machines are star quality.

Thank you for sharing the film as I was unable to watch when it was on TV.

Great you figured it out. I don't know how you did it, but I use Google Chrome and Real Player for downloading Youtube videos. If you have the lastest version of Real Player, Google Chrome shows a download button above the video. I was quite surprised when the button turned up after installing Real Player.

I used saveyoutube.com. Worked like a charm.

For the past week I scoured youtube for a copy of the "My Crazy Obsession" washer video. Lots of links that didn't work. Finally a good one was posted and I uploaded the link and the embedded video over on the green forum. Robert was kind enough to take the link over to here so more people could access it.

For those who have not yet seen the video, it might be a good idea to hurry. It probably will not be allowed to stay up on Youtube much longer.

It was so wonderful to see both of you in the midst of appliance heaven. All in all, I thought it to be a great show despite TLC's efforts. It's also great just how much the both of you care for each other came thru as well. Just awesome!

Too bad you didn't show finding a vintage Maytag instead of that misbehaved Frigidaire. It would have behaved perfectly without leaking but wouldn't have allowed Fred to whip out the vintage floor sucker... LOL!

Oh, crap! I forgot about there being no ducking and running from the Webmaster! I feel a good slap coming if not outright banishment...

Beware of leaking fill hoses on Maytag's as I hear water is very dangerous!

I also saw the show! WOW what a collection! Your collection (Robert and Fred) has to be the country's premier, (maybe even world wide)! Considering how difficult it is to find some of these appliances (Apex washer for example), as well as the restoration and condition your collection maintains. I'm totally jealous of your basement and kitchen!!!!!
