I had this email from a lady who's 81 year old mother has a broken hoovermatic twin tub.
Can anyone help them out with a repair.

Her email address is jcaintree@aol.com

Hi Lance,

Thanks so much for replying so quickly.

In a nutshell, we have a very nice T5090 Hoover twin tub (bought on e-bay) that was working well after two years of heavy use. Then it developed a pretty bad leak and, not being very technical about washing machines, I got in touch with Twin Tub UK (in Sheffield) who tried to find me a reputable repairer in my area (Woodford Green, Essex) who might be able to help. The place he found said yes, they were familiar with these machines and could do the repair. I still had to load the thing into my car and get it about 35 miles to them - but they took it on, despite the fact that the guy there said he'd never worked on a Hoover Twin Tub before, only Hotpoints. He said it had a leak in the drain hose and in the seal on the spinner pump. He told us the pump should be replaced. I got a pump from Twin Tub UK (cost me £80.00), had it sent down here and the guy "repaired" it. I asked them specifically to keep the old pump as I wanted it for a spare - and they did not do so. I kicked up merry Hell and so they waived any charge for the repair.

When we got it home, the spin appeared to work, but the washing engine sounded a bit odd and the wash tub would not empty at all. To be quite honest, my poor mother and I have been in tears over this today as we feel we have made a great deal of effort, had a lot of hard work and inconvenience and spent a lot of money just to have a machine that's not working how it used to - in fact is unusable.

What I would like is to get this nice machine back in good order again but only in the hands of someone who really knows and whom we can trust. There are none like that in this area. In the meantime, we desperately need to get some washing done! We have a second-hand single tub washer (Hoover) which is OK but leaks really badly (so you have to use it outside the house) and a decent Hoover single tub spinner plus another old T5090 Twintub which has been in the garage for three years. This has something wrong with it - but I can't remember what!  Ideally, someone should look at all  three of these machines for us - but we certainly could not transport them ourselves. We only have a Ford Fiesta.

I would love to buy yours and give it a good home, but as I am sure you'll understand, we have lost quite a bit of money over our recent experience and it is a question of how much more we can afford to spend. Secondly, to come up and collect it ourselves (or to use a courier) is going to add plenty on to cost price. It's something that needs a lot of thinking about - and I am feeling pretty fed up with washing machines in general at the moment! It is very kind and reasonable of you to say we could try it out first. I am sure it would be great if it's as you describe.

It's very kind of you, too, to express a wish to help. If only you were nearer to us. Do you have any contacts this way - or who might be travelling through?

I look forward to hearing back from you , maybe with some advice. Sorry to have gone on so long.

Cheers,

Jane

I wish

I could help, but I could hardly be further away. i can't put into words my feelings on this, i don't know whats getting to me more, £80 for the pump or the lack of pride in the repair and customer satifaction.

I hope someone local can help.

Mathew

Terrible Situation

Some time ago i looked at this companies website and enjoyed the thought of some one out there rebuilding and re-selling good qaulity machines.

Now having read this i am very downhearted that this poor women who obviously uses her twin tub like it should be used, is then shat on by this company.

Like Mathew if i were closer i would gladly restore her machine for her, she does not deserve to be treated so poorly

I am so sorry I cannot do anything to help her

I can only wish her luck with finding some one who will sort out her machine

very sad that someone is without a machine and its causing them so much upset.

A bit worrying "I kicked up merry Hell and so they waived any charge for the repair".
This could mean she is a trouble customer, most people dont want old broken parts for spares!.

Prehaps someone should tell her about approved engineers at:

She could be

A trouble customer, and I've certainly had them. I had one customer shouting at me because I had to order a beko door trim, as if it were me who broke the door off in the first place. But that doesn't excuse a failed repair or bad service.

As for broken parts, I always show the customer the broken part and try and explain whats happened, the last thing i want is for anyone to be dissatisfied with my work, or think they are being ripped off.

Also in my opinion an appliance engineer who cant change a pump on a hoovermatic, shouldn't be calling themselves an engineer.

It would be a shame for these machines to be discarded for what is probably a relatively simple repair.

I wonder if the tech reconnected the belt or the linkage to the pump. It sounded like maybe the spinner was pumping but not the wash side. Or if the belt was off it would be labored with water. Seems like something that should take anyone with some knowledge no more than a few minutes to solve. A new pump should have no issues. I do agree with the pump system being very straight-forward.
