Wow - good thing those folks have never heard of an induction cooktop and how it works. They'd totally freak out....

They moved the kid's bed away from the wiring in the walls. Why not just tent him with foil like a turkey when you put him to bed each night?

I have a client that is petrified of EMF radiation. She has stickers on everything to keep the bad waves contained. She tried, in vain, to get me to stick one of them on my iBlab, as if!

Jon, you should get yourself a gauss meter, if you don't already have one, and let us know your findings. That new Speed Queen will be at the curb!

I thought washers were amongst the safest appliances because of their grounded metal cabinets that shield radiation.

Hmm, to be honest there are many many MANY other actual carcenogens that I would be far more worried about!

Household cleaners, chemicals of various types that are in common use, poluted air from smoke, car exhausts, etc etc..

The glue on the sticker that she's sticking to everything's probably more risky than the EMF :D

Ever notice how many plant nurseries (usually run by a guy in his 70s who's been there for ages) are deliberately located under high-power lines? It's no coincidence.

"The World Health Organization has now classified cell phones as a 'possible carcinogen.'"

After an extensive study, the World Health Organization now classifies eating and drinking as "possible asphyxiation hazards."

The average California driver is more likely to kill you than your washer.

James Thurber wrote that his mother or grandmother believed that empty sockets in light fixtures would leak electricity into the room so she was always checking lamps and light fixtures for missing bulbs.

Don’t linger near appliances when they’re running. Even though the ELF levels are typically highest at the back of an appliance where the electrical cord plugs in, the magnetic field directly in front of a typical washing machine can reach 20 mG. You’ll be exposed to only normal background levels by moving a foot or two away.

Pffft, w-h-a-t-e-v-e-r bitches, as if lol.

All this was disproved about 15 years ago, where has this idiot been. There are far more important things to worry about. The only thing that I agree at all about is turning off the electric blanket when I actually get into bed.

Oh-boy---Chicken Little is at it again---what a bunch of BS!!!Glad this person isn't at the transmitter site! The RF and EMF levels are quite safe in the building-well below OSHA limits if he must know. But near energized antennas-a different matter.

To Tolivac

When I visited a 50 kilowatt FM transmitter, I could feel my ears getting warm. I could swear it wasn't psychosomatic.

I also got to see an operating 50 kilowatt AM transmitter and didn't really experience anything. I even got to stick around in one of the tuning shacks. Can't get any more exposed to RF than that!

I was told by the station engineer to take off anything metal, in case the RF arcs over. That certainly made me really careful...

I think that people who are "allergic" to RF radiation are nuts.

One ham I used to know told me a story where he met a guy who said he was "Allergic" to RF radiation and couldn't stand cellphones. (He was getting crabbed out after he finished a call on his cell phone.)

So, the ham says, "You do know that the maximum power output for a cell phone is only 2 watts, right?"

The guy nods... Then the ham says, "OK, hang on a sec..."

His truck had a mobile HF station in it with a 2000 watt linear amplifier and a heavy duty alternator to drive it... He keyed up his rig and put out a couple of CQ's... had a short QSO (Conversation) with someone and put the mic back down.

The ham smiles and says, "OK, that was 2000 watts... How do you feel? If 2 watts gives you an allergic reaction, then that should have killed you."

The "allergic" guy turned ghost white....

Exposure to AM RF-At one point I had to work on tower light flashers on an energized AM tower.I could feel the RF through my feet-and this was on a cold snowing day. This isn't recommended today-but 30 yrs later-still around. For FM-Were you near the stations antenna or a "leaky" RF transmission line joint?I have experienced RF warming of my hand by placing it near a leaky RF joint in the transmission line-and the antenna was defective-High VSWR.And-while working on the base of a tower that was part of an AM array-the tower had a FM antenna mounted on it-A component called an Isocoupler(RF transformer) coupled the FM transmitter signal(40Kw)across the tower base to the transmission line on the tower-the "hot" end of the isocoupler lighted my makeshift "trouble" light--a flourescent bulb Hung by the isocoupler for light-it lit from the FM RF.The neighborhood kids loved my feats of magic.and you could slide the flourescent bulb along the FM line-allows you to see the "hot" parts of the reflected RF.40Kw in-1500 W reflected-that antenna was replaced by the manufactuer-then less than 10W at 40Kw input-and transmitter tubes lasted longer. The antenna folks paid for our tubes burned out from their defective antenna.
For very high power AM-The agency where I work has MW and LW overseas transmitter
sites that are 1 megawatt and 600Kw-this sort of power -yes you take off any metal objects-or you get a BAD RF burn or the RF if you get to close to the tower base-will arc to you.The short wave site I am at runs 100Kw,250Kw and very occasionally 500kw.I stay away from the hot spots and the antennas when they are energized-for routine operation we do not have to go into the tower feild. Its the hunters and others that may stray into it that can be a problem. Many years ago a hunter tried to use one of the support towers as a deer stand-he abandoned the idea quickly when he was informed the curtain antenna beside him was energized with 500Kw.SW curtain antenna arrays are made from lots of copper wire and supported by 4 towers up to 500Ft hight(low band) and 300ft square(high band)Low band frequencies of 6-11 mhZ,high band,12 Mhz-21 Mhz.Open wire transmission lines feed these arrays-and MANY warning signs posted not to contact them-or get near them-SW RF can arc to 6 ft or more.Birds don't read-and sometimes they get "zapped"causes a momentary VSWR OL trip on the transmitter. We are CAREFUL out at this site-In some of our transmitters-a 50Kw one is a DRIVER stage that drives the 250-500Kw stage!I really pay respect to the 15Kv DC voltages in our boxes and the 4160V 3phase power that feeds them!Your grounding stick is your BEST freind here!
As what we originally started here-Don't think the tiny amount of EMF from your washer or other appliances is a threat to you.

People kill people

Humans still spend enormous amounts of money and effort on science and technologies designed to annihilate other human beings in the most sordid and cruel ways. It's considered sound economics and an incredibly creative and diverse area of development (think gay bomb). Conversely, humanity still only micro-invests in bettering the human condition. What's the point of a happy, well-fed and healthy humanity - not enough money or excitement in that.

Selling washing machines that irradiate and sterilize your enemy as well as their clothes; now that is the pinnacle of human creativity. Developing devices that allow users to watch porn whilst their sperms and ovaries are either cooked or genetically altered; priceless.

Well then I guess my time must be nearly up with all the time I spent and spend doing the washing in the twin tub, I knew I really should have moved the loads around with a large broomstick handle.
I wonder what the hell my walkman has done to me after all these years and still continues to do,no more listening to music on the train coming to and from work then for me.
Newsflash!!!!! it has just been reported that excessive blinking your eyes can cause cancer as can patting the family pet for more than 10 minutes per day.

Do you still use a walkman? Wow, I don't even know how to respond to that. Must mention it to my analyst next time I see him. If you want a real dose of radiation get an Ipod touch or an Iphone, but don't put them next to your gonads, unless you want scrambled eggs and special offspring.

There are people out there who think that Wi-Fi fries your brains, and that you should sit at least 10 feet form a TV because the cables emit radiation.

Post# 581314 , Reply# 30   3/9/2012 at 04:13 (4,402 days old) by qualin (Canada)
To Tolivac

I was close to the FM transmitter, but I didn't notice any reflected power on the meters, so who knows. There was a lot of RF in the room though because engineers had put a faraday cage in the transmitter rooms. (The transmitters were located next to the studio, which is a little unusual, but the station dated back to 1949.)

BTW, Who these days uses a walkman? Except hipsters....

I once had a brief chat with a hipster who liked the "Organic" feel of cassettes and liked how they gave his music "Substance" ... I wanted to slap him...

I still have my old walkman, but I don't use it anymore. My smartphone holds 32 GB of MP3's. :) I keep it around as a kind of a keepsake.

Hard to stay on topic with these responses. :)

The Swedes keep pretty much distance to high voltage powerlines for their schools and kindergardens, because children are more sensitive to EMFs than adults.
On the contrary in Germany a school building could be placed directly under a high tension line. Caught that on TV yesterday.

FM radiation--were there any open covers on the transmitters-esp the RF power amps-this could cause RF leakage.I have visited and worked with a few sites where the transmitters were at the same site as the studio-many times the station has no choice-property cost for two plants may be too expensive.ESP AM tower feilds.-and the lower end of the AM band-the larger the site has to be--tower spacing and tower height.I was impressed with new Harrison consoles at one combined plant-they had their AM and FM transmitters at the same site-you could throw open the microphone gains and no transmitter noise other than the sounds the mic picked up.impressive RF sheilding and grounding in those consoles. Most radio station consoles are built with location next to transmitters in mind.
Walkman-aren't those antiques now-esp the ones that play "hissettes" I mean cassettes?Somewhere I have a couple knocking about.Haven't played them in years. You have to ask that listener how his cassettes and casssette player gives music "substance" and "organic"?I do have a Radio Shack "Walkman" type CD player-again haven't used it in a few several years. These have been replaced with a Blu-Ray-DVD-CD player "Walkman" movie player.Great for those long airplane rides-and no one bothers you!
For those that don't like powerlines-our plant is fed with 115Kv three ph to the site substation-this steps the voltage down to 4160V-and 1600A per phase!3 big GE transformers! The deer like to lay under these lines!Wonder what it would do to them?
