There were (are?) countertops for clothes too. I've seen one in person.

This is sorta the dishwashing counterpart to the Laundry POD all plastic manual clothes washing system. Don't know which is the poorer performer, but since the dish thing connected to the faucet, it had the potential to waste a lot more hot water.

Has anyone ever tried one of these with a gel-type machine dishwashing detergent?

Wow - we actually had one for a short while when I was a brat!  They were not really good performers, as I recall, but OK for a load of dishes to be washed immediately after a meal.    The ol' Viking top-loader was seen as a huge upgrade in our kitchen...

Tom's idea of using a modern liquid gel type dishwasher detergent might indeed be the way to go with a machine like this!  So, if anyone here buys it, let us know.... LOL

Eddie - I remember the 'back page' ads for these in BH & G, too!

Little tiny black & white ads

That was where I saw the ad for the THOR automatic washer; quite a comedown from the full page ads for the semi-automatic in the early 50s.

The ad I remember from back then & seriously wish I had acquired or could find today was the three bowl fountain where water flowed from the smaller top saucer-shaped bowl into a larger middle bowl and then into the largest bowl at the bottom. They came in a couple of colors, I think along with white. They could be arranged at various angles. I saw one or two in motel lobbies in Florida with potted tropical plants around them. It probably would not be that hard to make something like that with the fountain forms available at most garden centers today, but these were exotic & very modern looking in the 50s & 60s.

Many years ago, I found one of those at a flea market for my ex's aunt. Of course, I had to hook it up and use it before giving it to her. Once you got the hang of it, they worked surprisingly well. Not bad for a single person or two people who don't have the room for a regular dishwasher.

Unfortunately, the one advertised on ebay is missing the top rack that held cups.

We had one of them in the early 70's when I was growing up. We got it at "Two Guys" Department store. In 76 it was replaced with a GE Potscrubber. The one for sale is a new design so it may not have the cup rack. Ours had the round silverware basket then went around the center spray post and the cup rack sat on top of that. this one looks like it has a " T " sprayer that may wash down from the top. What i use to do is disolve Cascade powder in a cup of very hot water and pour that in the soap dispenser while washing the dishes and got great results in ours. The instructions said to put in regular dish soap and run the water for 10 minutes until the suds were gone. with my Cascade solution it never took that long, saving water and we got clean spotless dishes that flashed dried in a few minutes when you removed the lid and without pre rinsing.
