Although the machine looks spik and span, $500 is just way too much. The real laughs come when he says the original price for this N2 was $2, 179!

Wasn't there somewhere a reference here recently to a website that offers new Speed Queen wringers distributed from Saudi Arabia for $1100 or something like that, which also had new or NOS Maytag wringers for over $2k? I think that's what the poster is referring to.

Given enough time later this weekend, I think I can find the post using the Searcholator.

Easy washer at $5500??what was that seller washing? And the new SQ washer is just too expensive. You can get the TL SQ for less than that-or you could get a nice FL for that price.Usually wringers were cheapest of the choices.
"Southern" California--isn't that referring to the part of California that starts at LA and goes southward to San Diego?

well yes, that's Southern California...but usually "The South" means the Texas/Florida/Virginia triangle...anyway it's not important...and I contacted that guy with the Easy and he said he'd consider $5,000..."it's copper"??? You never know with some of these Craigslist adds, did they forget a decimal point or are they a little crazy?

Tolivac,

I think a wringer washer would be nearly as expensive to produce as a modern top load automatic. At least from a time, labour and materials perspective.

Consider that a Roper/Estate washer costs about $380 here. It was argued in another thread that the reason why these machines were so cheap wasn't because they cut corners or used inferior materials, but rather because all of the tooling was already paid for and that the actual cost to produce them was very cheap. Not to mention, they probably still make thousands of those machines every day.

This is how, for the longest time, at least my guess anyway, wringer washers ended up being cheaper than the automatics, for that very same reason.

Now, my guess is that the reason why a new wringer costs nearly as much as a TOL top loader is because the volume of the machines is so low (Even though the tooling was probably paid for back in the 1950's) that they probably have very high overhead operating costs. It's all operation of scale.

Personally, my thought was... if I started up a washing machine company (In theory) and sold wringer washers for $300 ea, would you honestly buy one? Probably not. :)

Apparently the poster is either very arrogant or has his head up his ass to suggest this price.

Wringer for $300-probably would-considering the prices of other machines out there.Thats what I mean in the early days-wringers were less expensive than other types.I would have to imagine-that price on the SA made "SQ" wringer reflects that it has to be shipped all the way to the US-Bet it would be considerably cheaper if it was built in the SQ Ripon,Wisconsin site.-least for US customers.
For the "South" thats where I live-North Carolina. The locals consider NC a serious Southern state.
