Call it a moment of weakness, but last year when I saw this machine sitting on the sales floor of the Sears Outlet store here in Charlotte, I had to have it. The price was $199.95, new, never used, but it had had some sort of repair. Turns out, a dent was banged out on the cabinet, which I think was the issue.

As soon as I found this, I found a NIB matching Kenmore 600 dryer at another Sears outlet, and it is still in box. For whatever reason, I wanted one of the last truly nice, well-featured DD machines with two speed agitation, no funky rinse fill, a nice snow-white basket, the giant lid, etc. So I figured for 200 bucks I'd get it. If family or friends need a washer in the future and want something "old fashioned", I think I may let this one out for borrow.

I just picked up the machine on Thursday. When I went to pick it up last fall, there was an issue with the rear leveling legs. Sears ordered parts, and I said I'd pick it up when they came in. Parts got lost. Then, the holidays came and I was WAY BUSY. Machine in the meantime gets burried in the store room by about 40-80 dishwashers for an apartment complex. They delivered in February, and I finally got off my posterior and had my truck AND my dolly cart two days ago to grab this.

Following are a few pics. The machine is as yet unused, however I tried it empty and all functions work (WOW does the motor make that 'new' smell after a few minutes! I have heard that in recent DD washer consumer reviews too). Its not a NIB vintage belt-drive, but I like it!

Posing. The mark on the lid is adhesive that I need to wipe off. Forgive the date on my camera, I took the batteries out recently and it re-set the date.

Money shot. I am uninspired by that softener dispenser. I wish it was removeable.

Cycle options...enough for me for sure. I like how it offers an extra rinse in every cycle.

Finally, a machine with enough water levels. I often use a setting somewhere between medium and full, so this will be nice (if I use it much).

For good measure, here are a few pics of my 1993 Kenmore 70 direct drive washer.

This is still for the most part almost a virgin machine (Ok Kevin we'll say it is VERY lightly used, but still used...is that better? LOL). I used it for less than 200 loads in between 1993 and 1997, then replaced it in my last house (in the garage) by my rebuilt 1985 Kenmore 80 belt-drive which I call "Robo-Washer". This DD then spend the next 9 years dormant, maybe used once or twice. In late 2006 I brought it in the house, and used it as my daily driver from then until April 2008. It had been used so little prior to that when I did several loads back to back after bringing it inside, I noticed a similar new motor break-in smell that I mentioned above.

I like this machine, and came to respect the DD line much more after using it.

As you can see, there are some nasty dents in the top. This was a delivery mishap, and it was in the scratch 'n dent room at Sears before they had outlets. I put on a new lid and worked on the console as much as I could. Long story on the acquisition, but I have come to really like this machine, in fact I think it will be re-installed in the garage soon for some more use, as it has been sitting for nearly 4 years again. I think it probably has about 500 to 600 loads "on the clock" total, which is nothing.

The obligatory money shot. I have the softener dispenser, it's one of those that rips fingernails with the powder blue snap ring on it. I keep it in the cabinet inside.

One last pic.

Maybe I'll do a video of both DD washers running side by side in the garage. Now THAT would be a disturbance in the force!

One interesting thing about the 1993 era DDs - they were the first to have the Heavy Duty cycle and the Normal which incorporated slow speed agitation. In the timer after the HD cycle is a second rinse provision, but I can't recall a machine that I've ever seen which actually had the second rinse as a live cycle. Anyone?

And it's ABOUT TIME you picked that other one up!   LOL

Waiting for the Dueling DD video............ tap... tap...tap

And.... 200 loads a "virgin machine"??   I think not.   Virgin is just that, virgin, never used.   You popped it's cherry with the first load!

"A live second rinse cycle"

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
Thanks Darren - what I mean by a live second rinse is that in this model and many others, the second rinse is present in the timer (its that big gray "off" section after the Heavy Duty cycle), but it is dead, non-wired, non-useable.

Kenmore has done that often over the years, having a giant 'OFF' where a second rinse or a Pre-Wash is, and they charge $20 more for the model which has the live, useful cycle over the model which has all the provisions but the cycle is dead.

I'll find you another example and post it here.

Kevin - Yes it is about time I got this. I am working on my list of things to do. Are YOU? :-) :-) ;-) (Oh yeah, I altered my wording above to better suit you, but go ahead and keep ducking for a while...

I'm heading out now to go spend some time cleaning a Lady Kenmore that followed me home all by itself somehow just now...

Gordon, that fab softener cup is removeable. The top part of the cup should pull right off. However the rest of it maybe part of the agitator cap. I've seen these taken apart before on that particular agitator.

With the cutbacks (cheapness) mfrs are notorious for today, I can't help think that the missing cycle portion is just a matter of a different panel silkscreen and a couple jumpers removed from the timer. They're not going to commission two different timers for the sake of removing features. The trick would be knowing WHICH jumpers WHERE.

Arbilab -

You are exactly correct.

Since you and Darren commented on the dead cycle, I am going to post a clear example of what I'm talking about. It will be in the Imperial section, as I am using 1970s and 1980s Kenmores to illustrate.

Vern - thanks for the suggestion. The dispenser does pull off, and it look like a second section comes off too. I would prefer it to be capped flat.

just bought a pair of 600's today

Hi Kenmore guy!
I just bought a washer and dryer combo at an estate sale today. Looks like they have not been used much and the estate sale crew says they used them for the four weeks it took to get the house ready and they were fine.
I researched them AFTER buying them and am pretty scared,. The reviews online are terrible. I have a pair of kenmore series 70's that I love but the tub is beginning to rust and stains my sheets. I also wanted a second rinse, automatic. This looks like it will do all that I want. Do you have any complaints? Is it a direct drive or a belt driven machine?
Thanks!!

Hi Ken,

Have you formed an opinion of your estate sale purchases yet? I wouldn't be surprised if the online reviews have been filled with recent comments about the new belt-drive machines that came out shortly after these 600s were marketed. I sometimes think people and even retailers don't know that they are reviewing the wrong product at times. Back in the 2010 time frame, most of the reviews of this line of Kenmore machines were positive, with mostly comments about washer noise as the main negative sentiment.

To answer your question, believe it or not I have not used this washer yet, and the dryer still remains new in box. We lost my Dad in May 2013, and the previous 12 months I spent very involved with family. Back in the groove now so to speak, I have to decide what to do with this washer, as I am thinking it might be better off, with the dryer too, being used by someone who would appreciate it as a daily driver as I will never put a lot of miles on it. I did get my '93 DD out the other week for its first use since 2008. I think I have used it now six or seven times. I like that washer a lot, but I don't need two DDs.

I would imagine that you are happy with the 600s?

Gordon

happy with the 600's

Gordon! Thanks for getting back to me. So sorry to hear about your family and the loss of your dad. I lost my dad a couple years back and am still trying to get over it. It takes a while. And I have not decided whether I like being the adult now or not. Not much choice now but to give in and grow up!

I sold my series 70 Kenmores 10 minutes after placing them on Craigslist the same day I got the 600's. I was a little scared to let them go as they have been so praised at every turn by so many. However, the tub must have had a few chips in it as the sheets soaking overnight had little dots of rust stains on them when finished washing. After working so hard getting them clean, didnt like that and made it a little easier to let them go.
I was all prepared NOT to like this set, but I have been won over. The extra rinse, the extra large setting,The really long cycle for heavy duty, the big tubs. I love it all. Now I have to be fair and say the machines are a little louder as stated in the reviews. They do not shake or move as claimed. Wash quickly and dry even quicker with fewer wrinkles (none if I get the clothes out in time). The lid does flex and twist and the whole set up looks cheap. But so does my 1995 Aspire. But I am keeping it as long as it runs and gets 40 mpg. Cheap or not! The ONLY thing I really cannot reconcile is the lack of a true hot wash. I believe in hot, hot, hot washing for whites and sheets. I am considering a diverter on the hot faucet with a hose to pump hot water straight into the machine for those things. Or I could just use the Kenmore Visi-matic and hang them on the line.

I am from Charlotte also. Where are you located? My family is still in Derita, Indian Trail and Monroe. My last house before moving to Atlanta was off of Central Ave at Eastway in the "Little Country Club" section. Wish I still had that house!

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I would say enjoy the 600's, faults and all. We all have adjustments to make as we get older right?

Ken
