Does anyone know where I can find a Maytag brake tool.  How much should I spend on one?  I saw a price of $35 which seemed kind of high to me.  Does anyone have an extra to sell? Cool

I just went to google shopping and searched maytag brake tool.  Looks like the price was lowered, only I don't want to spend that much right at this moment.  Maybe I am just too tight haha

$35 is a good price. New they are usually $75 - $80. Buying expensive tools you only use occassionally is part of the hobby, in my opinion. Some people have gotten brake packages off using a large screwdriver and hammer. It CAN be done. I would rather use the tool.

$35 bucks, I would buy a tonne of them at that price!!

I may get the dimensions of one and make a few this summer in the machine shop, if I do that, and they are perfect quality and dimensions, would anyone be interested in buying one at a ridiculous fraction of the price?

I have also heard of screw drivers and vise-grips work well.

MT Brake Removal Tool;

combo52's profile picture

I Love tools and there is nothing like having the correct tool for the job, But the MT brake removal tool [ and the WP bearing removal tool are both far less than satisfactory most time ]. It is very easy to remove the brake package from Helical drive MTs with a large Vice-grip grabbing the edge and one little blow with a hammer. I often find the the REAL tool slips off the brake package when you try to use it, and it becomes awkward and dangerous to use. The other month I was working on a MT in the shop where I needed to remove the brake package to replace a noisy radial bearing and I didn't even bother to stand up and lift the brake removal tool off the pegboard area where the tool was hanging. Instead I just picked up a Vice-grip and my small mechanics hammer and with one small blow I was all done.
