Hi all-

Appreciate the advice on the LG's I inquired about--I decided to keep them after all, but store them. I have identical (but newer) LG's like them at work, and I'll store these as a backup pair when the new ones poop out. Which will be soon, from what I gather.....

Anyway! I've done a simple swap with the LG's for Kenmores. It's a total fluke, and I'd love your take on these. I'd totally forgotten that when we moved in this place two years ago that I instructed the movers to just put aside in the corner of the garage whatever washer and dryer were there, and install the LG's. Never thought to lay my eyes on the units that came with the rental property.

Well, today I decided to remove the boxes/furniture placed in front of them, cleaned them up and installed them. And not only are they purdy, they work beautifully! Now, if you'll be so kind, will you tell me what I have?

Both are Kenmore, Series 80. I have no idea if the washer is BD or DD, or how old they are--I'm guessing 20? You decide. More pics to come...tell me all about them, and thanks in advance!

Serial (cereal?) number. Interestingly, my clothes have come out of this washer 'wetter' than the LG, but not as wrinkled.

Serial number. Clothes came out beautifully, not too hot, nice and fluffy. Thanks, Kenmore!

Very nice.

You have Direct Drive machines made by Whirlpool. For sure less than 20 yrs old most likely early 2000's units. These are good solid performers. Most likely will outlast any LG. They are well optioned as well. The reason for wetter clothes is that these only spin to 640 RPM versus 1400 for most LG's.
Nice washer and dryer, Enjoy them.

That was a popular model for Sears 2000...something.

They are DD machines.

People here like the Slow Fast setting to reduce wear.

Manual 2nd rinse.

At least you dont have a lid lock and you can add water via reset water level knob.

Classic whirlpool dryer with a therminster..

Please use your auto feature when drying.

Hope this helps for now.

We have the same set at home for the time being, we purchased our washer in 2001 and the dryer in 2004, they are quite dependable as we've had no repairs and we do a good 15 loads a week,

A Sears favorite for many years.......................

Sears used to advertise this machine regularly for $399. Every year they would add a new feature.....Porcelain Top.....finally the extra rinse switch.....but this was a big seller for Sears, and that time configuration / style is from around 2002/3

Congrats Charley...nice set...
The washer is commonly referred to on the site as a "Shredmore"...
The "Fast" wash speed is quite vigorous, as it's a Direct Drive...
Although I don't think it's much more taxing on the clothes than the Amana/SQ I have...
Nevertheless, the "Slow" and "Extra Slow" wash speeds will come in handy, and suitable for the majority of your laundry...
If you don't like them and want to sell, let me know...
Wise move on the LGs...

George

You have yourself some very reliable machines!

For your washer, Just be sure of what speed to use depending on your fabrics and you will have no problems with wear on clothes. ;)

Thank you!!

Exactly what I wanted to know: What they are, and little tidbits about their use.

Really appreciate it, group! Going downstairs to do another load as soon as I press "preview and post".

very nice

I'd love to have this set. I miss a true two-speed washer and if I buy another TL (vintage probably) its a must.

Well then you'd like this one even more, it's a 3-speed!

I'd forgotten...

...what a great sensory experience doing laundry in a TL was. The FL LG came into my life as a housewarming gift from in-laws in '04, and I embraced its looks and technology without a second thought. Nearly silent, it just did its job quietly in a kitchen closet .

I came home last evening and found my other half sitting in a folding chair in the garage watching the storm clouds on the horizon, with the end of a pina colada in his hand. I sat down next to him to catch up on the day, and in the background? The Kenmore churning, clicking, spinning....heavenly!!

I'm grateful that AW could help me find my roots again!

I use the very same Kenmore dryer in gas with  a hamper door.  The cycle layout and all controls are a exact match to  mine.  The 29 inch wide Kenmore and Whirlpool dryers are the best i have ever used.  I had the KitchenAid in electric, but naturally when we moved the hookup was for gas.   You will totally enjoy your Kenmore set. alr

The very reason

stan's profile picture
Im on this side (deluxe) at the moment, is because I have the exact same washer! It's just starting to act up a little, so I came over to see about non Vintage Kenmores. My partner and I bought it from Sears in 2000, (there's a date) and have have had no problems until now (just a coupler) It has been very dependable for 12 years! So I'l fix it! and continue on! I've never had a FL machine, and aint planing on getting one. I like being able to open the lid and see what's going on, or feel the water for softness, or look at the suds level, or as you say "hear" what going on! I think you'l be happy with yours for a long time.

Best of Luck

to mention that your pic of the tub did'nt show it having its automatic fabric softener dispenser that sits on top of the agitator? Sure you could find one if you wanted.

May you continue to enjoy your new set. Congrats on nabbing them. I miss the 90 Series Kenmore we had. I would have loved to have taken it and the 80 series dryer with us when we moved 7 years ago, but we had to leave them behind. Enjoy these well.

Have a good one,
James

I had that exact washer.  I bought it new, from the Sears warehouse with a minor dent in the side.

They don't make them like this anymore.  This was in 1999.  I bought an electric dryer that is several steps down from yours.  It had the hamper door and 2 temperatures.  The panel had the timer and the push to start button and it was the super capacity, like yours.

They always worked great.  The washer had the snap on fabric softener, though I never used it.  I kept the washer until 2006 when I converted to FL.  I sold the dryer in 2008 and it was still in spotless condition and working great.

A year later I bought basically the same set-up, but with  a few more features for my mother as a gift.  My mother kept hers until 2 years ago when she bought a cheaper new Whirlpool set that are like the last of the DDs.  She wishes she had her KM set back.

I think the best part about the washer is the 3 speed motor.

Good luck with yours.
