Another member here inspired me to get some washer projects done this weekend and I'm glad I did. I have this Frigidaire poppy red 1-18 washer that sprung a leak at the top of the hose that goes from the fill valve to the top of the machine where it connects to the circle spray fill tube. It had been rubbing against a sharp edge inside the cabinet and finally started leaking. I thought I should finally do a thread on how I cleaned up this machine and made it the beauty it is today.

I acquired this machine about a year ago from another club member Brett-'areuonetoo' from Tacoma, WA. Brett, thank you again for this wonderful washer that replaced one I had many years ago.

Here is the first picture of the machine just before I acquired it.

When I got it home I decided to take the cabinet off and just see what all it was going to need.

I had my work cut out for me although I have seen worse. At least there were no leaks evident from under the mechanism which is always a good thing.

However the missing top ring from the agitator column allowed the water to shoot up through the jet cone channels during agitation and spray right over the subtop and kept the base plate and sides of the cabinet wet for a long time. This combined with lint and what seemed like pet hair caused all the gunk and surface rust to form inside the cabinet.

Here is what the cabinet looked like inside. Nothing that some sanding and a little POR won't take care of.

While we're at it, I think the control panel could use a change out as the old one is looking a little worn. I guess this is what happens when you allow laundry sprays, suds, and grime to remain on a control panel. It eats the finish away.

Original 'Crown' panel in back, new 'Imperial' panel in front with fabric selector!

Time for an agitator refresh too. I got lucky and bought the control panel and perfect agitator from a guy in California that was parting out a machine.

Here you can see the difference between the old and the new replacement agitator. Those chunks missing were probably caused by the lint filter falling into the washer while it was running and getting caught under the fins during agitation. This was a common problem as the tab on the end of the rail that holds the filter in places gets worn and then the vibrations allow the lint filter to fall into the tub. Not good. Sometimes the agitator cap becomes loose as well and falls in and as you can see, that is what happened to this one as well. The power of the jet cone shows no mercy to hard objects.

Here is the rubber cone that sits under the agitator along with a washer and hold down nut for the agitator. Also included from Brett was a brand new lint filter and I made sure the rail was replaced as well so there will be no 'failures'.

A little out of order but here is the base pan all cleaned up. This was before I started the work on the agitator replacement. I also cleaned all the urethane rollers with lighter fluid and scrubbed the metal rollers with a 3M pad and alcohol. This makes a big difference in a smooth running machine.

Bar Maid

I don't mind a bit the washer with a quilted panel that looks like a bar stool got swapped out for the beautiful machine.  Only thing better than a wall of Frigidaire is when it turns the corner and keeps on going.

#15 is an Oscar winner. What a shot! Surprised Really gives you a hint at the chaos of water during the spray rinse.

Everything is so beautiful and I don't want to pester you, but what is other Frigidaire in # 7 with the extra control so close to the main dial. Don't think I've seen that panel before. Is there a pic somewhere?

"HERE TODAY, HERE TOMORROW" So funny and so true. Thank You.

John,

Thanks for the compliment. The schematic pasted to the front of the tub is dated '77. The machine is non-shaded and could be what you refer to. I have only seen the word poppy listed in the service info I have but maybe it was called Terra-Cotta in later sales literature?

Did this originally have a 3 ring and you swapped it for a jetcone?

EDIT: PS: The detail here is incredible~ metal 3 D lettering, you really got something for your money back in the 60's.

Can't let that question go unanswered.

As Robert can attest (I think I remember that right) he used this agitator in his Super Unimatic because he thought it gave the best washing action in the 12 lb tub.

Here's the pic.

Lent and Jet Cone?

Don't blaspheme Mickey, thats a perfectly sculpted three ring predecessor to the Jet Cone in the 63/64 models.  Turquoisedude has one in his Deluxe version.  I prefer pre Jet Cone especially during Holy Days.  Say 50 Hail Dials and follow with 10 Our Automatic.

My mistake. In number two, it looks like the top and the shading of the 3 stage jetaction agi. "Mea maxima culpa." Actually, I prefer the three ring.

And Patrick, I did NOT trick you into giving up the money shot by mistaking the agitator. I really mistook it.

what a fantastic job they look stunning .

I could set there in a chair and just gaze at the 63 Imperial pair they are by far

the best looking Frigidaire machines to me.

Mike said it the circle spray shot could win a award...I agree very nice man.

Your tub ring looks brand new did you get one or just a very good cleaning ?

I see your detergents low sudsing which do you like the best ...

Asian Tide is not bad...  and Ariel I like.

Hope you get years from them. Wink

Yes Patrick that is really a great job there. That Poppy Red color is really such a stand out those really will be museum pieces 50+ years from now, or right now depending on how you look at it. These are certainly getting rarer - I haven't seen any up here for quite a while. I can't but help hoping that the matching dryer shows up. Thanks for posting.

Kelly - I remember how mesmerized you were watching the '63 the first time you saw it. Hail Mary is right!

Joe - I'll do a Multimatic thread here in the next day or so.

MickeyD - I know you didn't trick me into showing the agitator! LOL The distant shot tricked your eyes. In person, the green and blue rings are really cool.

Darren - Thanks for the compliments. The plastic ring around the Multimatic tub is original and the best side is actually showing in the pic. It had some mildew but I cleaned it with everything under the sun and it came out better than it started.

Ben - Thanks for your kind words. I had really wanted a '61-'63 Custom Imperial like you have because I like the push buttons but as you know they are rarer than hen's teeth.

Brian - So nice of you to pop in! I have noticed the same thing about 70's machines becoming less and less. I don't even see the center dial Maytag's much on CL anymore. I've got some more things in the works that YOU will like.

Peter - I knew the poppy red 1-18 would be a hit with you. I must be psychic! Hope you are doing well.

Robert - Thank YOU! and for confirming on the agitator. I remember you saying that in the Super U video. Where is that machine these days? I am surprised that TLC didn't want to film it in action as it is made for TV!

Leon - I'll cover everything I did on getting the Multimatic up and running. I did not have to rebuild the transmission so hopefully you don't either. Good that you have the manual as it will help.

Brett - So glad you saw this. I owe it all to you for finding this machine. Thank you again. Hope to see you visit down here one of these days.

Thank you for the lessons in this post. One question: how did you get the spray fill ring to work so evenly? I've cleaned out and re-installed two of these, but the sprays in the last slits are always much droopier than the sprays in the first slits. Is it just a question of house water pressure?

Also, I bought a 1-18 sieve-type lint filter on ebay a while back on faith. Are they interchangeable with the bed of nails type?

That is sure a pretty poppy! Nice job on the remodeling - I like the Imperial panel a lot.

I wonder if they were polishing rocks in this machine before you got it, one of the most broken agitators I've ever seen. Maybe Peter H will post a picture of the 1-18 agitator he altered by removing all of the cones except in the middle? Can't remember now exactly but I don't think it functioned all that well with the cones gone...

PhilR- Thank you. I really admire your Frigidaire collection too. You've got some great machines.

Eddy- Thanks! You'll have to make room for a 1-18 by getting rid of one of those front load boil washers! Or you could always bring a certain lighted SQ down here.

Chris- You better check your garage. Your poppy may be missing! LOL

Ken- I really think it has to do with high water pressure on the spray fill. All my machines fill very quick because I had the incoming house pressure valve turned up a bit. On the lint filter, the 2 types are not interchangable. The subtops are designed differently as to how they mount. I actually think the sieve type clogs too fast anyway and then just runs over the back.

Greg- Thanks for the compliment. The new control panel is nicer and gives a few more coptions without having to change the settings mid cycle. I like Special for when you want to do a small load with slow agitation but a fast spin speed.

Tony- I'm glad to have inspired you. I've had a love of Frigidaire's since I was a kid. The first set I got just kind of found me. Then I discovered this club and the collection began. Just keep thinking about that elusive machine and it just may appear some day.

Kevin- You will have to come up sometime. Thanks for all your compliments. It was fun putting this thread together. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Gordon- Yes, YOU have been an inspiration for me to get back into tackling some of these washer projects. I am constantly amazed at your knowledge of all things Kenmore. Thanks for being a good friend.

Louis- I miss you and wish you could be out here for the upcoming wash-in. Don't worry as I'm sure there will be lots of pictures coming your way.

BrianL- AHA, so you spotted the AT&T Merlin phone. My house is wired for them using the 820 control unit. I truly miss the days of land line voice calls. The system only has 1 active POTS line on it now as most calls seem to come over the iPhone these days.

MY Fave color for a 1-18! THat is beautiful and your restoration of it rivals what I do to my machines! What a beauty! Don't ya love the switch ability with those 1-18 control panels, just a plug/ unplug and you are done!

That base plate really cleaned up, better than I thought looking at your initial photos.

I have never seen a jet cone agitator in such bad shape! How in heck did they knock the top ring off?? Thats heat sealed vinyl for gawks sake! Its one solid piece of vinyl after assembly!

A Beauty for sure, enjoy for many years to come.

In pic #11, you can see three hoses: inlet, recirc, and what is the other one for?

Wonderful Joe L. gave me 2 Energy rings for a song. I only needed one. Would you like the other one. The machine is so perfect, it's crying for a new Easter skirt for the Poppy Parade.

That's a fantastic restoration. Thank you for sharing the pictures of your machines with us!

The "Poppy" pops

...now gasping, catching my breath, turning on the fan - it's HOT!

Without a doubt, the most beautiful and stunning 1-18 I've ever seen! Your attention to detail and quality are to be commended. A job above and beyond well done!

John

Jon - Thanks for the compliment. Frigidaire used porcelain on steel for the base plates so it makes them easier to clean up. It's funny but this is the second jetcone I've seen with the top ring snapped off. You gotta wonder what people do or what kid was playing around with his mom's washer!

Rick - Thank you. I've had some great inspiration from you and the machines you've restored. You've got some real showpieces.

MickeyD - Yes, I watched it wash when I got it back home to see what it did and with a full tub of water it sprayed the lid like a Kelvinator. Of course this machine wasn't designed for that so lots of water went where it shouldn't. The third hose at the very right of the picture is actually the drain hose and the outlet end is just resting where the suds return hose would have gone if there was one.

Bud - Thank you and I have really enjoyed sharing with the site. More to come.

John - You are right about the color. Poppy is my favorite of the 'modern' Frigidaire colors. Thank you for the high praise!

There's a solution...

Look up a box called the xlink. It's a Bluetooth box that takes your cell phone, and converts to rj-11 that you can use with cordless phones, or in my case, a co. Line on the phone system. Now when a call comes on my iPhone, it rings the pbx co. Line and all the extensions ring. I have the 820D-2 version pbx. PM me if you want more info.

Ok...back to original topic lol.

they did use porcelain on steel but your machine looked etched in those first pix. Glad it wasn't. Poppy Red Rocks!

They clean much better than the Avocado machines!!

Bob - Glad you liked! I really still think there are cool machines waiting to be found here in the Pacific Northwest.

BrianL - I have heard of the Bluetooth xlink device. I considered it but then realized it probably doesn't support text or other notifications and if I lay the phone down I wouldn't know until I went to look at it. It is a cool toy that I wouldn't mind playing with though. Thanks for reminding me about this.

Jon - as you know the camera sometimes hides imperfections. There was a little rust in some spots, especially around screw holes but I touched them up and from a distance you don't see them. As far as avocado machines, think of them as an unripe tomato or as I like to call them SAGE GREEN. It's all the rage now!

I LOVE the sage green machines. They look so clean and pristine, lean and mean. I think the faux bois on them is terribly keen.

Aren't you pointing at a PANK rock there???

Patrick you've changed my whole perspective on Avocado calling it Sage!! I love those now!! But the you'll see with experience the Poppys will clean better!

Jet

PS Bob- nice washer "rhymeage" there!

Stone work

Bob, that's a beautiful stone wall, and a very hot guy standing there!

CircleW. I'm afraid it's not my work... That's the exterior wall of the Gent's restroom at Shannon Falls Park in BC, Canada... midway between Whistler and Vancouver. And thank you. It's one of the very few photos of me that I like.

(I figured the pink painted rock was a tribute to gay stonemasons like moi. LOL!)

LOL at Jetcone

We're a rare breed of "non-breeders".

Wow Patrick, what a beautiful machine! I didn't have such an appreciation for these until I saw yours in that awesome color, and your great restoration!

Jeff moparguy - Thank You. You really appreciate the 1-18 models once you use one. They have the largest capacity, fastest spin speed for it's time and do a really good job in cleaning, rinsing, and providing a fun factor while watching.

Bob dishwasherfan - Thanks for the compliment. I never intended on collecting as many machines as I have but I really enjoy each and every one of them. I have to admit the first time I saw the poppy red color back in the late 70's, I was hooked.

Funny Problem with a Poppy Vs a Tera-cotta 1-18 Washer

combo52's profile picture

As some of you know I built a 1973 pair of poppy CI 1-18s that are at the mountain house by switching the cabinets from middle of the line poppy machines to a set of CI 1-18s. And when I made a trip with Robert and Jon and others to Aberdeen S Dakota years ago when the appliances were still there I found a Poppy window lid [ or so I thought ] and brought it home. When I installed it on my CI 1-18 in the mountains I immediately realized that the color match was terrible, At first I blamed GMs poor 1970s quality control for not being able to match colors well. Only later did I realize that I had a Tera-cotta lid and not a Poppy one. I have since found a proper Poppy window lid for the washer.

I fact Patric if you would like a Terra-cotta window for your washer get in touch with me as I know I still have it, John.

John -

Thank you for thinking of me with the window lid.

My machine DOES have a window lid so I won't need it but I appreciate your generosity. Here's another pic that shows the lid better.

I may be contacting you about other parts though!

Patrick

Are the lines through the lid FOR something, an electronic sensor? Or are they merely decoration?

If there is any other reason for them I didn't find it!

Lines In Window Lid

combo52's profile picture

Are Just decoration, I always wished that they had been heater lines like the back windows of cars as the window steams over as soon as the washer starts filling with hot water and is nearly useless to look through.
