Even assuming that the three sheets that made up the itemized 15 lb load were twin size, I don't see how they loaded all of that stuff in the Maytag without doing a bit of packing down in the deep tub.

The tub in the LK was the large capacity tub. This ad dates from 1977 or 1978. The GE with the dispenser lid had to be their larger tub, but would it have had the straight vane agitator or the spiral ramp style? I do wonder about the WP tub size though. Because they do not show the control panel, we cannot be sure it was a large tub machine. WP's washing action is so much more vigorous and the turnover so much better than the Maytag's that it would seen like they must have chosen the standard capacity tub for the results to be so poor versus the LK and on a par with the Maytag. I know the DAA did wonders for load circulation, but I am still puzzled about the WP's performance. If any of you remember the CU washer test from the mid 70s, they showed that a large capacity WP washed in two loads what a standard capacity Maytag washed in three.

The one variable that they do not specify in the test procedure was the wash time. The most they could get out of the Maytag was 10 minutes. What about a WP machine of that time? It seems that they had 12 or 14 minutes of wash time IIRC. Greg, you have a GE like this, or did, I believe. What is/was the max wash time on the Normal cycle? Did the LK have a setting longer than 10 minutes of wash time in the Normal cycle? Do you suppose they set all of them for 10 minutes or just started them at the maximum wash time in the Normal cycle? It would be in Kenmore's interest to give all of them a wash period no longer than the LK's, but IF the LK had a longer wash period they certainly could have used that longer wash to their advantage because they do not specify the wash time used in the tests.

Beats me why Sears would want to put a Whirlpool machine in the ad (I can tell by the lid handle) if W-P makes Sears' Kenmore machines...

Perhaps putting a Maytag in the ad (& keeping the GE; I recognize the lid design!) might make a little less competition within a brand, as is so depicted...

Interesting Ad.......

they all used their largest capacity models, Regular/Normal cycle, the only one that may have been cut short would be the Maytag at 10 minutes, while the rest were closer to 14.......

its hard to tell about any certain load, where as always, bulk is more of a factor than quantity, towels would be a big issue on this one.....

I remember the commercial with the see thru tub, and for the DA, they would place a black sock in a all white load, and thru time lapse, would show the sock moving around, in a very packed machine, claiming it would rollover the load about 2 or 3 times more with the DA versus any other agitator......this worked well for the belt drive version....you would not pack a DD like this, then you would have clothes damage.....

I added the DA to my Whirlpool, when it was available in the catalog, just to increase the capacity and rollover, especially with blankets or jeans........the spiral help make sure the load turned over.....and it did not mean you had to pack the machine, and the spiral only kicked in if needed....

Tom -

The Normal cycle in all full-size Kenmores that I can remember from the early 60s forward max-out at at least 12 minutes. In some of the early 60s machines, they denote no more than 12 minutes wash time on the consoles, but the fill/wash period starts a little before the markings, so I'm guessing they had 14 minutes total. From the later 60s forward, they all had 14 minutes available and marked on the dials/consoles. Whirlpools I think were usually similar, except some better models had the Super-wash option in front of the Normal cycle.

The load size in the ad is very subjective. "Three sheets"? Like you said, they have to be twin sheets. Six towels? They must have been small. Six towels that I use can more than 3/4 fill a large capacity Kenmore, but my towels are those big body sheets, which go from my collar bone to my feet. There is no way that I could get all this on one of my machines without all the fill water ending up on the floor. Two tablecloths too? Are we talking airplane tray-table covers or a dining room table?

I have always made the assumption that each of the other machines was also a TOL model, which in every case would be their biggest capacity. I think the manufacturers would have had a strong case if the comparison was biased in such a way in Kenmore's favor had they not used large capacity models for all four machines.

The GE appears to be a Dispensall. Is a large cap. GE's tub larger than Maytag's? I have always assumed that the GE's tubs were smaller than MT's, but I could surely be wrong.

Sears always showed load sizes or load contents which were much larger than anything I would ever load in one. In a subsequent DAA ad, they showed that the DA rolled-over a load X times (I can't remember how many) in 14 minutes...by this time they were specifying wash times, when even their own Penta-Swirl would only roll over the load once in 14 minutes. One roll over in 14 minutes, even in a PS, is one giant load. The machine must be stuffed, slammed, and crammed.

Gordon, I agree about the loads and not only about the size of the towels, but also the weight.

The Large Cap GE tubs are larger than a MT Deep Tub.

I have used bath sheets since I was in high school; bought my first one out of the Sears catalog and it was 36 X 72". The last time I needed to replace ones that were about 10 years old, I found a deal on eBay for a dozen white ones from some hotel/spa supplier. They are huge, reaching from head to foot and so thick that moisture does not travel through from the side drying my body to the loops on the opposite side so I get two day's use out of each. Three of them fill up the 6kg Miele. The best thing is that I bought a dozen for $60 and got free shipping.

Even in a large capacity Kenmore, I think that is still way to much stuff to have packed in there. In one of the ads I remember they said that the DA rolls over the load 7 times (and they stated the wash cyce was 14 minutes). I really have a hard time thinking that our Super Surgilator would get defeated in such a way.

Oh, the little blond lady in the ad sure is cute ...

But she sure don't hold a candle to Ms. Betty Furness!

Thanks Tom I was going to get into a Thread about Dual Action Agitators.
And will when I gather more Material.

The first genaration augers to me had the longest curve to the top and bottom.
To me was very affective at turning over laundry.

Bruce it is true that it can turn over laundry in even 5 mins and a half
here in this video look at the BLUE plaid Gingam pattern shirt... in the end it should make...
7 Turnovers.
This was A VERY LARGE LOAD.

This machine is now in Martin's home ( Yogibear ) lol.

Well thank you for sending a movin' pitcher! What's with the weak stream dispenser water? Calls to mind commercials for prostate medicine or the put down for the totally incompetent: "He couldn't manage to get water into a lake if he was pissing off the end of the dock."

Good, because the one on John's Frankenmore used to really gush the water.

Had this exact machine. It was amazing how much laundry it could do. It could even handle horse blankets.
