Yes, the doors of Casa Kerr have been graced with another twinnie, this time a Hoovermatic 3334. I was really surprised that it did not go for a higer price given that it is reasonly good cosmetic condition. And it was close to where I live so .......

This is perhaps where the trouble starts.

I was too late home with it to do a water test but the impellor seems to turn freely enough as does the spinner. Not sure about teh spinner pump though .... And the valve to choose empty tub or spin seems to be siezed up

Heater

vacbear58's profile picture
Can I use some kettle de-scaler on the heater or will that be too corrosive on the rubber pipes inside? The heater chamber cover was removed although it too was included.

Hoses too

vacbear58's profile picture
I was pleased when I opened it up to find the drain hose was included, but both hoses are ROCK hard. Advice please on how to make them flexible again - Mike, if you read this can you kindly remind me of the name of that stuff you were telling me about a couple of weeks ago please.

For the princley sum of £11.50 this was (hopefully) something of a bargain but it would be nice to have some splash drama from it, although my hoover Twosome also manages that quite well too :)

Try soaking the heater elements in undiluted vinegar. That will descale them without harming them.

I'm not sure what you could do about the rubber parts except either replace them or try soaking them in hot water to see if they loosen up. Perhaps using rubber rejuvinator (sp?) on them might help, but they're on borrowed time if you do that.

Good luck and congrats on your find!

Morning Al,

Nice find there, did see it on ebay, and being soo close (Epsom) did wonder if you would go for it.

The OCV control is probably clogged up..but these do pop up on ebay every now and again.

Hopefully you will have it gleaming and up and running soon..congrats !!

You did mention in another thread how was the washer collection going ....

Surprisingly enough this machine was less than a mile from the Philips I got a while back - it did not cost much either. Just this last week I got a matching dryer for that - a lot further away but it was a good excuse for a trip to Bletchley Park as well. Then there was the EE Reversomat style dryer at Christmas ....

Here is the dryer (ebay picture) to match the Philips Variotronic - this has particular signifigance to me as this Philips combo was the very first washer dryer set I ever owned, way back in 1980. The dryer is actually in better condition than it looks

Hoovermatic 3334

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Congrats Al on another great bargain find, looks in good nic for its age, theres not much on these that cant be fixed...stick it outside and put a couple of pints of hot water in each tub and check for leaks, if no leaks fill up with hot water (or quarter tub in washer & set to boil) then if the valve works pump it into the spinner and then spin it back into the tub - heating it up again and repeat.

For the heater yes as Qualin says stick a load of vinegar in and boil, all the crud should flake off, be wary of scraping to much, usually the scale can cover rust / holes etc and hold it together!!

The OCV....

chestermikeuk's profile picture
This can be taken apart, but first squirt a load of three in one oil around and over the lever, let it soak and try and move it about, usually they free up, but if not its easy to take apart, 4 screws and two hands....and if krudited use the vinegar trick again, stick it in a pan and boil....the Oovah Induction Hob is optional!!

Worst case we have a few spares or recons...usually just the rubber caps over the seating valves that perish in these....

Cheers Mike, thanks for the tips. I am not sure that someone has not been at that before as there were two (apparently spare) grommets for the wash deck lever included as well. Still no harm in giving it the 3 in 1 a try.

What about the hoses? Please :)

fab twin tub

hi Al,
I had two of these twin tubs, unfortunately one of them was beyond repair but i did take it to bits and kept just about all of it except the tubs and casing so if you need any parts let me know and you are welcome to them.
The other one i have is in great shape and is certainly one of my favourite machines, i hope you get a lot of enjoyment from it once repaired.

What a lovely machine to get Al, easy to work on as everyone else has said, yeah the hoses from the pump to the valve can be a real pain, if they are to stiff then the pump wont operate properly as it is mounred on a shaft and relies on a spring to hold the whole assembly with the drive tyre on drive pulley.

Best take the hoses off the pump end first.
with a bit of patience all the problems can be solved on these machines.
If you venture so far as to remove the control panel be careful not to kink the capillary tube that goes down to the tub from the temperature dial.

I have no parts left from mine just some nice memories

Good luck
Gary

yes looks in great condition visually. let me know if you need any parts, i have several of the gaskets that fit the ocv valve and some of the pump components which are the same as were fitted to the single tubs, but anyway see what you find when you set to work.

Nice to see the instruction card as well.

Doing what HMs do best

vacbear58's profile picture
When I first put hot water in both the spin can and the wash tub there was only the slightest leak from the wash tub pump - that actually seemed to stop after a while. So I put more water in the spin can and filled the tub up.

Switched on and everything seemed to run beautifully - smooth and quite quiet

Post# 593186 , Reply# 26   4/30/2012 at 17:22 (4,375 days old) by vacbear58 (Sutton In Ashfield, East Midlands, UK)
And now the snags

vacbear58's profile picture
The spinner pump is not working at all, not sure if it is seized or needs a new belt, at least it is a bit easier to get to than in the spinarinse.

I tried oiling the pump selector valve from the top but its still jammed. It was remarkably easy to remove which again seems to imply that it has been off before recently. The piston seems jammed but I will give it the vinegar rinse and see if that helps.

By this stage there has been hot water (slightly hotter than my hand could stand) for about 40 mins and having run it for about 8 minutes, the hose from the wash tub pump seemed quite warm so I gently tried to manoevre it down so i could gravity drain the tub and DISASTER - the hose broke in two places, the lower of which was right above the pump and it was water water everywhere - just as well it was outside. Thankfully I had unplugged it before starting. I suppose I had not left it soaking long enough.

So, now I need a new hose as well as all the rest :( The spin can hose seemed to be OK, but I will probably replace that too.

Thanks for posting the pic's..It is the same machine that a lady opersite my parents had, It was immaculate as she rarely used and nearly always had a table cloth over it..I think it is long gone, but could still be there.

I will post some pics of the EE Liberator's over the weekend hopefully, the machines are still at a garage where i use to live so not easy to access.

Did you have any luck with the vactric ?

Wow Al, thats one clean twinny for its age, never seen one so clean, ...those pipe always look fine until you start to move them...more likely original so best to replace them all, have used halfords pipes for replacements...again with the pumps either take it all apart and descale, you might want to take off the chrome cover during the cleanup...this area gets all the soapy residue and scum can build up...this is a pic of what you might have ..

The dryer looks great, thats the washer & dryer my grans brother had,it was in a small laundry area and placed on a built up concrete plinth...

Liberators

Wow, I forgot those ever existed.
My mother had the washer and dryer, I know it was in the sixties because we moved house in 1970 and took them with us.
I seem to think that they were originally cream and she painted them White.
Are they in working order?
They must certainly be rare.
Al, the water valve on my Hoover twin tub was also well and truly jammed, after I had removed it I gave it a good squirt of WD40 and then gently tapped it with a hammer on the plunger from underneath , it did the trick and now is working perfectly.
I must admit it is certainly my favourite twin tub , although of course the servis MKII looks better.
Hope you have fun with it.

Hi Paul, thanks..the machine with the lid up is a MK2 Parnall Spinwasher.

Hi Lance..that Tumble dryer works, the washer needs the pump looking at, something to do with the spring as it is moved into place when required by solenoid.

Lucky you having a Parnall Spinwasher. My Nan had one when I was little, it was a semi automatic according to my Mum. I don't remember much about it apart from it seemed huge to me as a little boy. Mum said before Nan bought the Parnall she used to hire a wringer washer every week from a man with a van who ran a washing machine hire company. He had several wringer machines and did different streets on different days of the week, you hired the machine for a morning and he dropped it off and picked it up again.

Hi Paul,

The Parnall is a great machine, I have a video i did of it in action going through a wash, rinse and spin cycle some years ago, but can't find anyone to transfer it from analogue video to pc format.

Tha machine was classed as a semi-automatic as the machine was filled with water, washed and then the user maunally switched the control to spin. You could either save the water for future wash loads or empty it straight away and proceed to the rinse and spin cycle.

I have had two of these machines, the first machine i had to be dump as the outer container was badly damaged by corrosion.

If you want to know anything else, drop me a line.
Keith

My Mum told me as much as she could remember about the operation of the machine. Thanks for posting the leaflet, I had seen a similar description in a Which? magazine. I just wish I had been at my Nan's on laundry day. She got rid of the machine when I was 7 and she moved from her 3 bed house into a flat. There was no room for it in her new kitchen and also the lid had badly rusted and a replacement could not be found.

Vacbear.....sorry, kinda hijacked your thread, sorry.

Hi Al,

They were good machines, and were a good alternative between wringer washer & twin tub or fully automatic, allowing the housewife to still be in control of the wash without having to handle wet washing.

Yeah a catch up would be nice, let me know when your around and hopefully we can arrange a date.

Cheers
