What a score! Any pictures of your range? You know, we love our ranges around here (in the yellow forum, of course). LOL |

Well, have you ever had it apart before? If so then your ahead of the game. If not you've been treading on thin ice.
Anything that old should be serviced before it's ran. That includes your washer too. Have you had your Maytag classes yet? If not you better enroll. I noticed you haven't paid you class fees yet. You can do that at the top of the page where it says upgrade membership. Your best bet in finding old school Maytag 101 is right here in the archives, unless your lucky enough to find an old fella or one of us with nothing to do except help you . Good luck on that one. Do you know anything about mechanics or basic electricity? If you don't you should. You should also have test equipment and know how to use it. Repair manuals for the machines would be nice if you're gonna do any work, but they're most likely not settin' on a shelf at the store down the street. If you're lucky, you might find them on ebay or maybe at an old appliance repair shop. You've got some great classic machines there. It would be a shame for them to break because of lack of maintenance. Good luck with them. Oh, and by the way, Rick's right. You shouldn't use that dryer anymore. It's trying to tell you something. Like, turn me off and fix me. The washer sounds pretty good, but you should still do some basic maintenance. This post was last edited 04/29/2012 at 17:12 |

It's impossible for me to diagnose the problem with 100% certainty, but it sounds as if there is too much clearance between the bakelite fan assembly and the main drum drive pulley. This will cause the fan to work its way back, hit the back of the fan housing and then bounce forward again. Have you every worked on an appliance such as this before? This adjustment is a relatively simple one given the drama that CAN ensue with an old HOH dryer.
Basically, all you need to do is remove the back of the dryer, loosen the retaining screw on the drum drive pulley and move it forward about an 1/8" for starters. That may not be enough and you may need to move it in a bit further depending upon how far it's drifted. I've done this on two HOH dryers that have exhibited similar issues and it usually solves the issue. On second thought, it may also be a simple issue of the cabinet not being perfectly alligned. HOH dryers are NOTORIOUS for not being happy unless they are perfectly level and squared. In that case, loosen the screws on the back (there are about 16 of them). You don't need to remove the back, just loosen the screws so that the back has some "play" in it. Place the dryer in its operating position and level by ajusting the feet using a proper level. Once it is perfectly level, retighen the back screws and this problem may might just go away. If it doesn't, contact me directly. |

Mark you are likely correct about cabinet alignment being off, also many times on HOH dryers there is so much accumulated junk at the bottom of the heater schrod that in moving the dryer some of it shifts and scrapes on the drum as it revolves. This dryer should be completely dissembled cleaned and serviced.
On Saturday I finished the mechanical restoration on my brown DE750 MT HOH dryer that matches the CA900 that I completed about a year ago. Mechanically it came out great and runs fine, I ended up setting the heater wattage for 4500 watts at 208 volts. I also added a heater relay to protect the push-button selector switch and motor centrifugal switch. I have got a little work to do on the Electronic Control, interestingly it works fine on regular but will never shut off on Damp-Dry or on Wash N Wear. The dryer works fine and will live at the Museum with the washer for others to use and enjoy, I just don't trust HOH dryers for every day use, I have seen too many fires with both the gas and electric models, plus we have a sprinkler system at the warehouse if anything goes terribly wrong LOL. |

That is a very interesting conundrum regarding the electronic control on the DE750. I've been studying the schematic of that electronic control and have yet to have my "eureka" moment. Perhaps after a few more hours. This control is just enough different from the 1st and 2nd generation *06 series dryers that I have not had any personal experience with them. For those who are interested, here is the schematic:

Thanks for posting Mark, I didn't get a chance to work on the dryer today but I don't think it will stump us very long. I am going to change out the dia-cast pot-metal control panel trim with one that is in better condition and check over all the wiring connections on the electronic control etc. Often on these older MT EC dryers we would solder all the leads directly on the EC board as these connections could become troublesome as they age. |
