The first of what would be the long line of D&M dishwashers hits the market.

My great aunt had a 1950 Crosley Shelvator refrigerator. When her house was sold in 1989 it was still running strong. Her next door neighbor had an early 50's Crosley air conditioner which lasted them about 30 years with no repairs. The fan motor finally burned out so they had it replaced because the compressor was still in good shape. I love seeing these old ads with Margaret Lindsay. She was quite a popular leading lady at Warner Bros. in the 1930's.

Which came first, though - the Crosley version of the Roto-Rack or the American Kitchens version?   The machines were pretty much the same, but I was curious about the timing...

I don't think it mattered since American Kitchens was the steel cabinet part of AVCO.

Crosley sold steel cabinets, too; they were the same as American Kitchens except for the trim. They were made in the AVCO Connersville, IN facility.

When I was very small we had a Shelvador refrigerator. I recall it also had a reservoir in the door that could be manually filled with water which could then be dispensed; I was too small to reach it so don't recall the specifics. That refrigerator bit the dust one weekend when we were away and the thermostat or a relay failed. It locked the compressor on until that too failed, nearly starting a fire under the refrigerator. We came home Sunday evening to a warm refrigerator and a burning smell in the kitchen. I think that was when we got the Kelvy Food A Rama.
