This fits the big tub Maytags. The four slits on the agi shows that. The picture was shot in a weird way, making it look thinner and strangely taller...

Good to see you posting and it was fun meeting you at the wash in!

Hi there Andy! It was a pleasure meeting you too! The reason I ask about this agitator is because my room mate recently acquired a Maytag washer/dryer set in Harvest Gold with the washer being a model HA806. He was wondering if this would fit. The washer is in fact a "Big Tub", but the agitator on the machine doesn't have a screw to remove, but is held on with a rubber ring similarly to that of the Maytag Wringers. Is the agitator pictured in the ebay auction of the same design, or does it have the fastening screw? Or does that even matter? haha

Agitator in Auction

macboy91si's profile picture

This is not really the correct agitator but it will fit and work. I think this agitator is meant for the slightly newer Maytag "orbital" machines I think, thus the protruding vanes and extra humps on the base. For reference sake I have included a photo of the eBay ad mentioned.

I think it would probably work fine, but if you are really wanting the correct unit, this link is for the correct one. Note the smooth barrel and only 4 fins at the bottom. The 806 used a snap ring agitator, like a wringer, but the newer agitators used a set screw as does the one in the auction, but this will still work.

That is an early agitator for the Orbital tranny machines. It would not be of much use in a machine with the standard Helical Drive tranny because the agitation speed is too slow for those short fins to move a load around. However, if you put a 50 cycle motor pulley and belt kit on it, you can get great results out of the Load Sensor Agitator. An agitator with the set screw can be substituted for those held in place by the O ring on the agitator shaft and the O ring does not have to be removed to use an agitator with the set screw. I swap my Maytag agitators around depending on what I am washing and they interchange easily. I use the smaller finned Orbital agitators for low water level loads.

I will tell you this, though. Even though you can get good turnover with larger loads with the Load Sensor, the machine cannot handle larger loads in terms of disposing of soil and detergent. The amount of water in the machine can only hold so much soil It can only rinse away so much detergent. If you load it too full, even though the Load Sensor will move the load, you will wind up doing extra rinsing to get rid of the soil detergent. In the 3+ decades of experimenting around with my Maytags, I have found it is better to try to improve the washing action of the loads the machine can hold than to try to increase the capacity by aggressive agitation.

If you look around eBay, you will find Maytag agitators much cheaper than this.

The link to the agitator that macboy91si has posted that is in Bowling Green, MO is not the right agitator. I had them send me close-up pics of the underneath side of the agitator and there is no place for the stop ring to pop into. If you look closely at the base of the column right before the skirt starts down you will see a set screw. They also sent me pictures of the set screw.

This is an agitator that came out of one of the very first orbital drive machines; before they redesigned the agitator. I know because I bought one from Sears around '92 or so. The orbital drive came in in the late 1980's, I think, so the washer they sold me must have be an older stock machine that had been setting around. When I first looked at the machine at the store it looked like the old long stroke machine.

They brought it in to the basement and started to hook it up. I said leave it alone. I'll hook it up. That's all I need from you. I balanced it, read all the instructions, hooked it up and we put 5 pairs of jeans in it. We had 29-32 inch waists, so the machine wasn't over loaded. It started that fast frantic sound. I opened the lid and depressed the button. I had been deceived. This was not the Maytag I knew. The jeans wouldn't even turn over. I immediately called Sears and told them to come and get the damn thing and that it wasn't worth crap. I said a Maytag isn't supposed to act that way and I won't have it. Get it out NOW! It was gone the next day. I was so disappointed.

I had just thrown out my solid tub Speed Queen from the mid to late '60's. I was so mad at myself. I wanted it back. I still do.

Anyway, that's the agitator you're looking at. It doesn't work with the stop ring, so don't get it.

Oh, I think that's what Tom just told you. Sorry.

I have never seen them in turquaz... This must have been one of the very first for the orbital tranny... Not the fins on the barrel are so rounded compared to later versions that were more pointy...

I'm confused

"An agitator with the set screw can be substituted for those held in place by the O ring on the agitator shaft and the O ring does not have to be removed to use an agitator with the set screw."

I was also under the impression that agi's with set screws could be used, why can they not be?

Just curious

Same Exact Experience

Beekeyknee - I had the exact same experience that you described except I purchased from Montgomery Wards here in KC. A brand new set in the early 90s. When I loaded the machine, it would barely move the clothing at all. It went back to Wards the next day. Years later, I've purchased the matching dryer from a thrift store for $35, which is a very good dryer - but only Helical drive Maytag washers for me.

Orbital transmission washers have the helical drive... It's completely separate from the transmission... What you meant to say is "only pitman transmission Maytag washers for me"...

This agitator is from the early Orbital machines. The '12 series machines were both Orbital and Pitman/Helical drive in their production run. The orbital drive '12 series machines were found later in the production run. The turq agi was the one you would find in them. If you do some searching, one of the members here posted a picture of their orbital '12 series. I think that would be a lovely, rare addition to have!

I'm not sure the A9000 machines, which were the full on orbital drive series machines after the '12, featured the turq agi, I think they had a white agi. I could be wrong, its been a long time since I looked at one of those style machines, they don't interest me too much.

Thanks Jim, my room mate was ecstatic!

I was JUST watching your video on youtube Tim. I picked up a Turquoise "Super" Highlander Dryer today. Now the hunt for the matching washer begins... good luck huh? I can appreciate the simple design of the Highlanders. One question however, when the Highlander Dryer is turned on, and if the door is opened BEFORE the cycle is completed, and then closed again, it starts right back up again. How is the cycle stopped?
