If anyone in that area might be interested, that machine should have a suds-saver on it. Hard to tell if it is still functional or not, but it might be worth a check. |

John,
I had the same thought the second I saw that picture. Typically with this timer, the OFF section prior to tne Cotton/Sturdy (Normal) is WIDE, wider than all the others, because this is where the suds return is located, and is inactive on non-suds models, hence a larger OFF. This machine doesn't have that wide OFF, leading me to believe the suds was under the 14-minute wash setting. If you zero-in on the picture, sure enough, there is a setting for SUDS. Gordon |

The washer Kenny found is either a 1981 Kenmore 70, OR a 1982 Kenmore 70.
These are fairly rare as compared to the 1983 model that I bought. Mine was in Kenmore's best sellers of the 1980s, along with a couple other models of the belt-drive generation and a couple DD models from late 1986 and on. There is no way to tell from the outside if this is an '81 or an '82, but if it is an '81, it would be cool to have as not only is it a suds model, but the '81 version (along with its non-Pre-Wash cousin) was THE ONLY belt-drive ever offered by Sears to have a manual lint filter and a Dual-Action agitator together. It had been MANY years since a 70-series machine had a manual filter. Apparently this didn't go over well in the market, as this 1981 model debuted in summer 1981, and was replaced in Spring 1982 by a self-cleaning version, otherwise identical. By this time Sears was keeping models routinely for several years. What I liked about this model was the four water levels - there is just too much of a gap between medium and ex. high in my experience in machines from this time period. Medium barely fills the basket half-way up, whereas in the mid to late 70s the medium setting, then said to be for the average load, filled the large tubs to the second row of perfs from the top of the basket, which is much more accomodating. The dryer that Kenny posted above as a match is also an 81/82 model, and is otherwise exactly what I bought to go with my 70-series, other then mine having the big door opening. My DD Whirlpool, and 2 DD Kenmores hold 23 US gallons, highest water level, with no load. The BD machines 18# capacity, 20.5 gallons. At least that is what the book says. |

I checked the owner's manual for my Kenmore, which states water capacity at the various settings on the water level switch.
7.5 gallons on low (that's stupid, and I seldom complain about Kenmores...its even less then the 11 gallon low fill on older standard capacity machines). 13.7 gallons on Medium (like I said above, also not enough), and 21.4 on ex. hi. The difference between 20.5 and 21.4 could easily be what each different agitator displaces. I have noticed that standard Kenmores with the gold straight vane hold more water by about a gallon than standard Kenmores of the same year with the Roto-Swirl. This I think because the S.V. is space efficient and the Roto-Swirl's ramps occupy a good bit of space. I think I had heard that this generation of BD Kenmore (they were considered energy efficient belt-drives as compared to the older generation that they replaced in 1981) could hold a max of 22 gallons. They were availalble with the winged Double Duty Surgilator, the Penta-Vane, and the Dual-Action. Not sure which one takes up the most space or allows for the most water. The older generation of large capacity 18lb. machines held over 24 gallons. That's a lot of water per load difference, and I've never noticed much of a usable capacity variation. Gordon |
