Hans, this may just go away on its own after a couple of cycles...   When I got an next-to-never used 71 Westinghouse front-loader, there was a slight from one corner that disappeared after three cycles with lots of hot water...

I Think!

I fixed it, at least for now, I took it apart and cleaned the seal and the brass plate it fits against and for now its not leaking.

Although this may have come out of Louisville,

this machine was made from the original Chicago Hotpoint design, I would say late sixties as the GE Borg collective started to assimilate Hotpoint starting in 1969. I think I have literature on this and these weren't bad little machines. In some ways they were a lot better than their GE front-loading counterparts, less noisy and cleaned a bit better. I'd keep it. I'll try to find paper on it.

Hans doers this drain by pausing and reversing the motor or does the motor continue to run and there's the "thunk" like on a GE dishwasher whereby the drain opens with a drain solenoid? That will help me with age identification.

I would guess early 70's as well, my aunt and uncle built a house in 72-73'ish that had a very similar model to the DA35 in the brochure above but slightly different graphics. The next year, the builder built the exact same house next door but of course it was "updated" for 1974 that had Han's style dishwasher but more BOL with no buttons. Seems they made this black-panel style for a number of years so it could have spanned farther back than I remember too.

I'm not sure if had the Whisper Clean gag on it, but Hans is right, you know the cycle is done when the glasses in the cupboards stop rattling! I always loved the sounds of the Hotpoint running - the sheets of water crashing around in that porcelain tank.

We had something very much like, or identical to, the DA35 in our house in Michigan. We moved into the house new on 12/22/67, so the machine may have been a '68 model, but it was identical to this inside, and looked very similar on the outside. I remember the one dial, and a bunch of printing in white on the coppertone door, but I don't remember any other trim other than the handle. I especially remember the bakelite wash arm, the center rack tower, and the detergent cup with the stainless cover on one side. I had forgotten about the "Hotpoint Custom Crafted" stuff. I always wondered, even as a little kid, what was custom about it...

Ours didn't live that long, but it was used at least 7 times a week, maybe more. We had it until 1975ish when it was replaced, by all things, a KDS-17A - what extremes! After that we moved to Denver and got the Potscrubber II in our next new house.

I will never forget the machine's demise, and yes, it had a real demise. It had been repaired several times, and my folks were tired of it and the expense. My Mom was in the kitchen talking to her mother in New Jersey - back when long distance calls were a big deal. I was watching TV in the den which was open to the kitchen, separated by a huge counter with an over-hang bar counter top. All of a sudden, mom shrieks "The dishwasher is on fire!!" as apparently smoke was pouring out of it. My Dad comes running from the living room and says "Let the damn thing burn!" and not long later there was this white flash and out went all the lights in the den and kitchen.

We took the machine to the dump in our neighbor's station wagon (Mom drove an MGB). My Dad and the neighbor did a one-two-three toss! into the dumpster, which was empty... lol. Boom...

I am glad to know some are still around!

love those hotpoints!

that was the first dishwasher i ever worked on at age 12 when i was a kid! that black spray arm and UFO looking pump! it is a reversing motor, that much i know.

don't think any seals are available anywhere. i have 2 of these machines and have been looking for possible seals myself for a couple years. so far no luck!

the second one i got last christmastime after seeing it posted here by robert. it came from california. a portable unit. my first one is a built in.

i would say yours is from the early 70's as it looks very similiar to my built in model. i was told by the guys here that mine was a 72 model. my other portable one has to be from the 60's as it has a more 60's look to the control panel. gonna do a thread on it here later this year when i get time.

your's has got the same style calrod unit as my 72 model pictured below. seems like they did away with the pressure switch in the middle of the tub in the later years also. my 60's model still has that switch cut out in the tub.

if you find any seals out there please let me know! enjoy your wonderful vintage machine! it looks great!

showing a different style calrod unit as well as pressure switch cut out and bakelite rack guides. this one is a much earlier model than yours.

panel area on this earlier model hotpoint portable. this has gotta be 60's! your's looks 70's to me with those round buttons. in fact i remember those machines, i always thought those round control buttons were really unique looking.

Hans,

What I've found regarding when this model was produced -

My 1970 Hotpoint catalog uses the prefix GDHA for all dishwashers.

My 1973 Hotpoint catalog uses HDA for all built-in dishwashers except the undersink model that was re-badged from GE.  There is an HDA771 model shown, almost identical to your panel, but not exact.

My 1975 Hotpoint catalog uses HDA for all built-in dishwashers and HDB for all portable dishwashers.  There is both an HDA772 and an HDB772 model.

My 1977 Hotpoint catalog repeats the 1975 information basically.

Also, the fixed upper feed that yours has was continued through the 1977 model year.  According to the catalogs, it wasn't until 1978 that GE had completely morphed the products and the dishwashers included the pop-up center feed (with accompanying "saucer shelf" type lower rack) that GE models had been using for a long time.

If it weren't for that "B" in your model number I would say yours was a 1973, but am not sure what the "B" letter designation means.

Lawrence

The Hotpoint shown was the first series of GE made models. We had one but the cycles were: dish potwasher, normal, rinse hold and on dial short wash. It was a good cleaner and a lot quieter then the origional hotpoint's.
