I was wondering if it was made in Fergus?

Real nice looking machine. I never heard of a GSW. Sort of looks a little like a later model Norge on the outside. But that Roto Swirl/Spirolater agitator is very different and probably washes quite well.

GSW/McClary was a Canadian brand.

This previous thread about the McClary washer-dryer POD has more information about GSW and their U.S. tentacle(s).   The history-link above has some great information and ends about 1961, I found more about the GSW-General Electric merger here.  Of course, there is little more excitement beyond the GE juggernaut takeover, but how interesting...  We're certainly like the Mormon genealogists of the appliance world - that Searchalator works!

May have to jump on this....

I've been wanting to acquire a wringer for quite some time and this one looks to be in excellent condition. As this would become a frequent driver (if not daily) my only hesitation is that this brand is obscure (parts?) compared to the ubiquitous Maytags, but is basically brand new.

Could Be Wrong

But aside from the pump and perhaps a few other bits on the wringer portion these washers are pretty simple and very long lasting. If this washer is indeed NOS and is in good working nick it could be decades or more of even daily use before anything "goes".

With wringer washers the thing is to keep the mangle portion well lubricated and make sure to keep the tension loose when not in use. Unless you whack the thing with a 2x4 or otherwise cause damage I shouldn't worry about parts.

If the owner's manual comes with the machine it will give advice on how to care for the rollers and other routine maintainence.

The thing with all wringers/mangles is to avoid damaging the rollers by passing hard or sharp objects such as buttons, zippers and such through without their being protected. Most houswives learned fast the ways to fold clothing with such items so that the potential for breaking them or the machine was limited.

I've always heard to button all buttons and zip all zippers and basically fold the clothes so that the fabric is covering the buttons/zippers to avoid them being ripped off. (I'm going from memory from when I was 6 [under my grandmother's supervision]).

I have two of these wringers and never zip or button anything. I have cranked through jeans and shirts, never a problem of breaking buttons. It will tackle a heavy, cotton bathrobe but you have to put it through in bite size pieces. On/off with the wringer. It never pops open.
GSW made wringers here in Canada for Sears, The Bay and Robinson's Department Store.

Wow! A Little North Of $300

Didn't think there would be *that* much interest. Wonder if it was a local purchase and or member as well.

I tried to get it, but was out bid at the last second and wasn't near the computer to return the favor. The hunt continues. . .

Sniping

launderess's profile picture
Between changes to eBay's system (realtime count down scripts) and almost everyone and their mother having high speed internet connections sniping has become a very delicate art. Have seen auctions outbid with <10sec left on the clock.

For something one really wants always make sure to be up and around to pull the trigger personally. Once the target has been aquired it's just a waiting game.

Indeed.

Spoken like a veteran of many Ebay bid wars. Luckily I have a Plan B.
