good at history but not repair I have a 10 year old whirlpool dryer that has suddenly decided its goal in life is to get as hot as it can without actually catching on fire. Any idea what gives?

it could be a thermostat fault

Overheating 10 YO WP Dryer

It can't be getting all that hot if it hasn't blown the internal 200 degree one time safety fuse. Give us lots more details, model # etc.

Sometimes the old whirlpool dryers do seem to run HOT. My 1987-88 dryer gets hot to the touch and has done so for years when it was in regular service. Never burnt anything, never had it blow the one time fuse. I do wonder how ever if the thermostats can get out wack after time? Maybe try to see how hot it actually getting? And then check that against a service manual??

A possible test

While i'm not sure of the exact dryer, try running it on lower temperatures, usually, if all the temp settings are just as hot as high, then it could be a bad cycling thermostat.

vent hose is blocked - remove the hose (From the outside, then inside), give it a good vacuum, and then vacuum the part where the hose clips into the machine, then put the hose back on, run empty, and see how much air comes out - should be a continuous stream of warm/hot air. Maybe replace the hose if it is old.
