How hard is to replace one of these?

I basicly have a choice here:

1. I can buy a new transmision for about 100 bucks plus
430.00 shipping

OR

2. I can try to replace the spring that engages the agitation.

Which would be less work?

A friend and competent mechanic took apart a WPBD trans. Ended up wishing he hadn't. You'll spend more than $130 worth of time. Buy the rebuilt.

They are not that hard to find really... I found mine on Ebay. He says he has several of them...

Also do a search under the Man. Partnumber.

Getting REALLY frustrating wondering if its even worth it...

OK so I paid for the "new" transmision and I was hoping to get it this past friday so I could i have the weekend to put it in... Well it seem UPS claims on their tracking info that the item was damaged during shipping and handling. Here it is going to be tuesday and it is still not here and seems like it might be dammaged... NOW WHAT DO I DO????

I have the old one out and took it a loose and it was as I have read on this forum... The Agitate Springs on the gear and fork are bad do to water contamination...Do I make a stab at rebuilding this original transmision?? Or what... I am out it might be time to set this thing on the street and call it a loss..
Opinions and advice please...

With no prior washer transmission experience at all, I rebuilt a 1960 Whirlpool belt drive transmission with info and repair manuals found on this website, and the phone advice and posting threads from helpful members. 2 years later, the machine runs at least 3 loads weekly. If you enjoy this hobby, invest some time and see what you learn.
