My Maytag has started making a noise.  Now I am fortunate in that I have an extra for parts if needed.  So the problem.....on normal speed (fast agitation) the machines sounds pretty normal.  I am guessing it's because the loudness of the mechanics masks the noise.  On slow speed you can really hear, only during agitation, a rattling type of sound.  You can hear the noise when the agitator moves both directions.  When it first started it would go away after a couple of minutes, but now it is just there all the time.  On fast speed when the machine starts agitation it smoothly starts up, on slow it is like it jumps when it first starts to agitate, its not the smooth start I hear with the fast speed.  I am not sure if this has any bearing on the problem or not.

I have replaced belts and the motor glides and this started about a month after I did that.  I am still not sure if I have the pump and belt adjusted correctly.  However, this sound really sounds like its come from the agitation.  Any help appreciated!

Just wait until it breaks

Thats what im doing with my Maytag and its mystery sound....im not gonna worry about something that may break months down the road.....so unless its really irritating you it would be best to just get the best out of the part thats failing and when it breaks (if it breaks) you should be able to get a pretty good diagnosis. If it wont agitate or spin then its probably the transmission, if it wont drain its the pump and I don't think the noise would be from the motor but guess you'll just have to wait and see...
