Hi guys,

Me and the fella are in the market for a new tumble dryer, i've been looking at a couple and narrowed it down, the reviews for both online seem pretty positive and price-wise there's not a lot in it so i want some other opinions before i decide....Both models are Hotpoint, the first one is the Hotpoint TVF770K....

Personally...

..I'd go for this. It's exactly the same internally as the Hotpoint range and cheaper

Alternatively, my Mum has this and it's a great dryer, albeit a little loud

Thanks AquaCycle,

I've used one of the Indesit dryers before and was pretty impressed with it. I'd be happy to have one but we want something that looks smart and has some features hence why we've been looking at the Hotpoints

the more basic the dryer, the better, in my experience. Less to go wrong.

Hi Seamus,

The Miele dryer (and washer) are at my parents house. I moved to London 6 months ago so although the washer and dryer were brilliant machines, i've had to start the collection again from scratch

If you can get them in UK.

The best dryers from this side of the pond (USA) are the 29'inch cabinet Whirlpools and the Speed Queens.  However these machines are quite large by UK standards and may not fit the space.

Hotpoint tumble dryers are pretty good in my opinion. Well we have a CTD80 ultima and it has never caused any problems. It is a bit old now hence the sensor not being as reliable on all loads but other than that its a pretty good dryer.

I know exactly what you mean by wanting a tumble dryer that has more features such as sensor drying and various other options.

Btw the Hotpoint TVF770K is from the previous years range where as the new range have a round door like the TVAL73C6G.

I would opt for something that has a time remaining display, btw what washing machine do you have? You could match the colour of the tumble dryer with the washing machine?

All the best with the new purchase :)

So the whole main feature of the dryer is unreliable? Great. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I expect appliances to last, regardless of their use. Especially someting as simple as a tumble dryer. We had our old Philips from 1981 - 1999 with no repairs, my Grandma had her Hotpoint from 1980 - 2010 with no repairs and my other Grandma still has her 1983 Creda compact with only a replacement filter. Hence why, in my experience, I've found the more simple a design the better. Ebby, how many continuous years of service did your old Electron give you? And that was just a motor, timer, drum, heat element and fan in a metal case. Stick with basics if you want something reliable.

Matching set?

Could you get one to match your washer I think it looks really good to have a matching set

I can highly recommend the Indesit dryer. I have had mine for six or seven weeks and for the price it is a mighty impressive machine. Will dry 6kg of towels in 50/60mins, a load of mixed clothing in about 45mins. The airflow on it is good and it's pretty quiet. Oh, and it tumbles for an equal amount of time in both directions.

We have a silver LG True Steam washing machine, i looked at the matching dryers but they all seem to be condenser models and we need a vented, if the washer and dryer were going to be placed together then i would definitely look into them matching but the dryer will be in another room.

Hotpoint might be alright.....

but they wouldn't be at the top of my wish list just yet. The latest ones definately feel better quality but it's far too soon to start saying they're good machines. If they make it past 18 months & we've not seen vast amounts of broken ones popping up on eBay then it's safe to say progress is being made, but till that point i'd still be cautious.

Personally i don't see much point in buying Hotpoint/Indesit/Beko/Candy/Hoover dryers when you can get a White Knight or Zanussi for the same or less money & know that it'll probably be a good deal more reliable - Unless you're happy to keep changing appliances every 18 months - 2 years, but i personally don't have the money for that!

By all means buy one if you want one, but go into it with your eyes wide open, at least then you can only be pleasantly suprised.

I wouldn't really go for the indesit I've had one for 4 years now don't get me wrong it does what it's meant to do but after 2 years or so it starts to vibrate the casings are poor quality but if you can live with the odd vibration go for it. White knight are great and cheaper if your not bothered about matching

TVF770 All the way

The TVF770 I own, nearly 1 year old now, It works really good the sensors are very accurate for the price, the drum is huge, for the depth of the dryer, and it dry's a full 7.5KG load in about 45 minutes to cupboard dry, which is dry.
It's made in the UK, unlike Zanussi, and is much quieter.
I certainly would choose TVF770.

However, It is the old design, they have had TVF770 for about 2 years now, so it is the old design, don't get me wrong, it is modern, but I have included in the link the new 8KG Hotpoint Aquarius+ Vented Dryer - TVPF85CG - it has 5 sensor drying Levels (As opposed to 4), and time countdown display, more programme choice, round door, It even has 3 drying temperatures, as opposed to just two on the TVF770. I am informed by Hotpoint, it will launch in all shops, when September comes. It might be worth waiting for them to launch in all shops, and Graphite is launching too, according to Hotpoint Brochure.

Chris, you do have a point there. We just use timed drying most of the time as we'll end up with dry washing where as on sensor dry (cupboard dry setting) they're still damp when they're meant to be dry.

That is true, our old electron was very simple/basic and lasted a long time without any trouble.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how long the CTD80 will last.

You obviously have a Bosch, Candy, Hoover, Zanussi or LG tumble dryer, why??? Because Hotpoint & Indesit Cupboard dry, actually dry's the laundry, so that only very little moisture remains, this moisture is not felt by the hand in any way. On Zanussi's, Candy's and LG which I have all experienced, and website reviews I have read about Bosch, seem to dry on cupboard dry leaving the items wet - I expected TVF770 to dry only on Ready to wear, but no it dry's properly on all cycles, as that's what a dryer is supposed to do.
On the TVF770 I own, and I here from others, Cupboard dry is my most used setting, it dry's the clothes thoroughly leaving them soft with no wet patches to the touch anywhere, lets juts say you won't have laundry all over the place!
I think it is pretty wrong to say that It is better to go for timed, as timed over dry's laundry, and wastes a lot of energy, in fact my VTD20 really wasted energy drying dry clothes, sensors detect (and VTD20 sensor dry did too), and cut off the heater when clothes are dry.
Lets just say - our electricity bill is right down since owning this TV F770, I put it down to short drying times, sensors that actually work, and no need to re-dry items, as they are all dried perfectly.
If Cuboard dry is not to your satisfaction - TVF770 has a Bed+Bath (Cupboard dry, plus about 5 extra minutes of heat) & Ready to wear setting (also referred to as Extra dry on other models) dry's all the moisture out, and still faster than timed models.
Maybe it's because no one on this site likes Indesit, well I never did, but their Tumbles dryers certainly are still good, and washers just got better last September, it's the start of something new for them. I'll continue to buy Hotpoint Tumble dryers, as they are made in the UK. I will never support Candy/Hoover or Zanussi, who make dryers outside the UK.

I have a Hotpoint ultima CTD80 with the blue lcd (from the same period as your old VTD20.) It used to dry the clothes properly on cupboard dry before but over the past year or so it leaves them damp which means we have to put it on again on a timed cycle which is annoying. We just tend to use timed drying. Don't get me wrong, we still like the tumble dryer as it gives good results. I would consider another Hotpoint if this one packed up.

The condensor is cleaned regularly, the fluff filter is cleaned after every cycle and the water is emptied after every cycle.

I like the newer Hotpoint dryers including yours as they have more programs to suit your needs.

i would suggest the zanussi that AquaCycle posted, they are rather good dryers and the build quality is good :) they are more flexible given the fact that they have three way venting :)

pedro, i strongly recommend the Beko DCU7230S model to match your LG washing machine i own Beko DCU9330W the build quality is decent for the price and the performance. i brought this dryer 2yrs ago and its been working flawless ever since, check it out, i wouldn't recommend a hotpoint. go for something like zanussi beko, samsung, lg, bosch, miele.

sorry Dyson 2 drums - I miss-read your comments.

I know what you mean now, one thing I regularly noticed is the old Hotpoint sensors were all over the place, my VTD20 would regularly over dry, and regularly under dry. However what I was saying was, the new dryers with the electronics such as the TVF770, and I presume TVAL, TVPF ranges all dry to perfection with the improved sensors which actually work. I know that the sensors will wear out with age, they all do, even Miele's, so can't really fault it on just that!
The Zanussi in Aquacycle's link looks OK, and has flexibility with the venting, and it has some drying programmes, but on experience with Zanussi, Cupboard dry leaves items wet, not fully dry like the Hotpoint, Plus it isn't available in Black/Silver.

Pedro, I am thinking??

Are you like me, you want visibility inside the dryer, glass door??
I notice, you have chosen the Glass door version of the new range TVAL73C6G - There is also a TVAL73CG which is the same, just with a plastic door, and may be slightly cheaper. Is Glass door a must, if it is, then only Hotpoint sell these in the colours you want!

stainless steel!

well as far as hotpoint go, i think the new range are pretty decent, which is strange coming from me. i think a matching stainless steel hotpoint set would look amazing, last you a while and would be easy enough to fix.

We're all human, we all make mistakes. I agree with what you've said, the newer dryers have much better sensors from what i've heard from consumers and read in reviews which is a thumbs up.

The glass in the door would be a bonus, it also needs to be a vented dryer. I've used a condenser before and even a Miele condenser left me less than impressed when it comes to drying times.
