My name is Doug and I'm working on my first washer project--my old 1970 Maytag A206 Washer. I'm working on the transmission--mine had two bolts and a snap ring holding the pitman arm to the pitman gear. Apparently I didn't remove to bolts correctly because they both broke off in the gear. Has anyone else had this happen and is there a way around it or am I screwed?

Thanks for looking!

It looks like that trany took on some water judging by the rusty parts. The bolts may have rusted and broke when you tried to loosen them or you turned them the wrong direction. They can be drilled out and replaced and the holes re-tapped, the bigger problem is what is the condition of the agitator shaft and the top bearings in the cover and don't forget to replace the O ring in the bottom of the lower case even if it has not been leaking before the re-build.

Never had that happen to me, but I'm pretty sure I have a spare if you need it. The bolts for the cover are on the short side. Are you sure they broke?

Make sure you have these parts on hand to do the job correctly:

22204012 Stem seal and boot kit

Y0A4298 Agitator Drive shaft seal

204013 Tub bearing kit

210632 Transmission gasket

210286 Lower O-ring

200744 Tub Bolt & gasket assy (short) (you'll need 2)

205254 Bolt & gasket assy (long) (you only need 1)

210183 Groove Pin for upper shaft. (Only needed if removing upper shaft in upper trans housing)

210315 Fiber Pinion

211483 Splined washer

211484 Lug washer

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the responses. I just assumed that the bolts had broken--I could get one of them to catch without the cover plate, but with the cover plate it wouldn't.
Plus it looks like I can see the remains still inside the gear. I did replace the bottom O-ring, and the fiber pinion and the splined & lug washer. I didn't do anything to the agitator shaft. When I took the cover off the oil was really thick and I didn't see any evidence that oil had been spraying around inside the cabinet but I wouldn't be surprised it water had gotten in it after seeing the condition of the tub seal. Here's a picture of the top of the transmission.
