This may have been discussed in the past, but I'm looking to find out some history on this color from its first uses in industrial design followed by its phase out. I'm curious if any one particular manufacturer can be credited for having first introduce an appliance in this color. We know it eventually became so popular that virtually all consumer goods were offered in this color for quite a long time, both as painted items (automobiles, bathroom/kitchen fixtures, large appliances etc.) and also produced as injection molded plastics for millions of different containers and other small appliances. I don't think any color was used as extensively as avocado was. Apparently it was the "in" color for quite a long time. In the 90's, I recall how many people reflected on this color with complete hatred, having nothing but memories of how "everything was avocado back in the 60's and 70's" and that it was "ugly". Well, that was the 90's and that was a while ago now. 15+ years later, it doesn't seem to be looked at as "ugly" like it was. I find more people think its a cool color rather than ugly. At the store, I see a few different things in "avocado" or some other variant that is close to the original olive green color, but not so much in appliances (yet?). Like everything, design trends come and go and eventually whats old is new again, maybe not to the extreme as it once was, but it at least still makes some sort of a comeback in a watered down sort of way. Perhaps this is happening with avocado, but very slowly.
I'm curious to find out some kind of in-depth history on this color, kind of a timeline so to speak. When was it first used on appliances (and by who. I think its agreed to have its first consumer use around 1966), when its popularity peaked, and when did it start to fall out of fashion followed by when was it last offered by the appliance manufacturers. Lastly, what kind of future if any do we see for this color making its return to the appliance world. Lots of questions, and probably no real definitive answer to some of them, but I'm looking forward to getting your input, opinions and experiences. Either way, I'd also like to see some photos of your avocado appliances, especially some of the later last gasp Avocado models(presumably)from the 80's. | ||

1975 Frigidaire Deluxe Range. These were my neighbors, they bought them when I was 10, I got them a few months ago after her passing...at one month shy of 102 years old!

To the best of my knowledge, General Electric was the first to use the name "Avocado" for a major appliance. However, in '66 Frigidaire had come out with a color called "Tahitian Green" which was a very similar shade. | ||

Doug, The window lids were mostly featured on Gold Crown and later Crown models. Other models had them too.
Here's my 1968 Frigidaire Rapidry 1000 Gold Crown washer (and the dryer that should eventually be painted to match!)

Doug, I like the way you think.
As I recall from the time, all the princesses were getting tired of their American Standard pinks, aquas, canary yellows and wanted something more "Natural". Peter Max was the rage and industry was responding by introducing colors that could, theoretically, be found in the forests and the farms. The word "ecology" appeared in our lives. I think the advent of less expensive color TV and the art directors for TV had lots of influence here. Couture followed very quickly; I remember the colors for the sewing patterns that my Mother drew changing along with the times. Avocado, unfortunately, was a very hard color to use in interior design. It quickly became the color of the close-out appliance and the odd toaster and iron. Most of the avocado appliances I remember seeing were bought as bargain-basement buys or to replace appliances that had been turquoise and were no longer available.
Here's a re -imagining of a kitchen I grew up with where I've replaced the white appliances with avocado ones and I've only changed the counter color a little bit to coordinate (the color transfer on this graphic is a little off; less cyan in the original so it looked much more authentically avocado):

Appliance colors go in and out of fashion, just like....well, fashion. The candy colors of the late 1950's and early 1960's were all the rage, but once they were replaced with avocado, harvest gold, coppertone, the once-favored candy colors (yellow, pink, turquoise, etc.) were derided. By the early 1980's, almond reigned as the great new color; later, black was fashionable. Currently, we're in a stainless steel-or-white mode.
While I think stainless steel and white are classics, perhaps we'll see a return of the candy colors or the Mediterranean triumvirate (avocado/gold/coppertone)? | ||

Bill, It is a 1968 model and it's how it came from the factory (with some added wear!). Other members (including Patrick who posted in this thread) have the exact same washer.
Some 1968 models were still produced in 1969. Mine is a US model, but in Canada, 1968-69 models were still produced until the Frigidaire factory closed in 1970. And the Canadian models differ a bit from the US models too. The last series from 1970 have a mix of parts from 1965-66 and 1968-69 US models. Washers made were not available here with the fanciest features like the variable speed clutch or the water level selector.
Here's my 1977 (which is identical to 1978 models) but it's not avocado... And unlike Patrick's similar Crown washer above, this one didn't originally have a window lid as it wasn't available on this model. (I kept the original one in case I want to switch back!). This lid was donated to me by SteveD and I really like how it looks!

Patrick, my 1-18 set is harvest gold just like your Gold Crown set!
I still need to repaint my Colonial Copper Gold Crown dryer so it matches my Avocado Gold Crown washer. Mine was a cheaper DE66 model with timed drying only and no heat settings but thanks to a forum member who had a DN5 dryer like yours that she offered here for free, I was able to get all the parts to update mine to have an automatic setting.
Here's the dryer with it's original control panel before I made the switch to DN5 parts.

oops! I wonder if I'm going color blind? I see now where your 1-18's are harvest gold but maybe it's the lighting in the picture too.
Nice conversion on the dryer and glad that worked out for you. I took mine completely apart, replaced the rear felt seal and cleaned out the lint buildup. It's a great dryer and seems very accurate. Patrick | ||

moparguy: Great Americana, but one note of caution, if you don't mind.
If you have a cat or cats, this may not be the range for you. The reason is those pushbuttons at the sides of the cooktop. They're placed where kitty-cats can walk on them - and then of course they get pressed.
There have been fires resulting from this source. If you have cats who never walk on the counter, it might be a different story.

RCA Range That range was built by Westinghouse (pre-WCI), betcha. The knobs and the faux woodgrain handle with plast-o-chrome end caps are the giveaway, as is the depth of the cooktop panel. The fact that the knobs have bubbled plast-o-chrome confirms it to me. On Westy ranges of that vintage, if you didn't keep your range's knobs clean, the grease buildup would attack the plast-o-chrome and make it bubble and peel. | ||

You had/have the same type of Sunbeam fryer model I have! Mine is a chromed one, always wondered what is it's age, can you tell something me about your one? It is identical, the squared light type and even the lid and lid knob, of course switch knob and frying/cooking chart......so same age I think..... Thanks | ||

Kevin mentions his Grandparent's bathroom and Ken mentioned the trend in the '70's toward more "Natural" colors that marketers and advertisers used at the time.
Here is a picture of my parents bathroom after we put down new flooring a year ago. My Mothers said the color was called "Fern Green" or something like that. Not quite Avocado. I actually like it. The fixtures are all original except for the lavatory faucet and the toilet seat. Everything is from Sears. Our whole house was practically from Sears. The bathroom, the appliances, the furnace, the drapes. I have heard that the toilet seats can be duplicated for color at places like Lowes. Does anyone know where vintage faucets can be found? I prefer the inside of my house to be decorated in whatever color I like. If I want to see "Nature" I can go outside. LOL. Dogs in the dishwasher. I can't stand it. I consider it bad behavior and poor training on the owners part. Ours gets a swat with the dishtowel if he even considers it. Here's some pictures of the bathroom. The wallpaper is no longer there.

Your Sculptura fittings are some of the earlier ones; in later years, some of the sleekness was compromised to incorporate soap dish recesses, etc. I remember sighing over this line in the Sears catalog, and longing for my parents to go to Sears and order all-new Sculptura fittings for our bathroom. I might as well have waited for pigs to fly past a blue moon on a night when Hell froze over. My folks were what you might call a leetle thrifty. | ||

Your Sculptura fittings are some of the earlier ones; in later years, some of the sleekness was compromised to incorporate soap dish recesses, etc. I remember sighing over this line in the Sears catalog, and longing for my parents to go to Sears and order all-new Sculptura fittings for our bathroom. I might as well have waited for pigs to fly past a blue moon on a night when Hell froze over. My folks were what you might call a leetle thrifty. P.S.: I envy you those sink legs and their attached towel bars like I cannot tell you. Though our bath wasn't Sculptura, our sink did have those features, and they were great to have. To this day, I would prefer having them, with cleaning supplies, extra paper, etc. housed in a proper closet instead of a vanity. | ||

 You can, or could get sink legs from Lowe's, I need to look again. And you could get mid century looking light fixtures from them too. I have a mint green wall hanging sink dating from 1960 from the house across the street, and a pink wall hanging sink from 1959 from a little house around the corner that even has the original jalousie window front door. Avocado in this house was rare, although green was mama's favorite color. We had a Sears electric can opener/knife sharpener, bread box like the one on Brady Bunch, a Hamilton Beach electric knife, and maybe an odd frying pan or two. I have an avocado Cory Party Chef, and an avocado 45 rpm record carrier right now. | ||

Sink legs are available, yes. But what I cannot find is sink legs with the attached towel bars, like the units shown in Brian's photo. The towel bars are what make sink legs worth having. They used to be a standard hardware-store item up into the later 1960s, before vanities became the "must-have" they are considered to be today.

Regarding sink legs
I have not encountered the attractive leg/towel bar combo anywhere, and for that matter, cannot find the sink legs in Lowe's anymore. I'm afraid I don't know something that you don't. What I'd like here though is a mid century looking cabinet custom built under my wall sink, I think it was done. No Home Depot cabinet sinks in here!
I wouldn't mind having something like this, we found this in a house about five blocks away, when the roommate was house shopping. I couldn't get the doors to reinstall. The toilet is a much newer grey one.

I forgot that MY bathroom (at least where there's TILE) which is in the bathtub area is ALSO Avocado & the floor is too!
However, when the money looks better, I'm probably likely to get a Surround for my bathtub & new flooring, as both are looking ancient, cracked & filled w/ grout mold & are ripe to be replaced! Yes, all the money the previous owner invested in this place all went into the fancy kitchen...! -- Dave | ||

I have that same wallpaper! It was hung in my drawing room! (you can still see traces of it under the paint.). I found some scraps of it left over. So I used it in one of the decorator panels of my '85 Kenmore Kitchen Mate Refrigerator!

My folks had similar masonite kitchen panelling with wallpaper applied in the 70's. Harvest gold kenmore appliances, Irish linnen pale yellow Formica counter top, light walnut cabinets. Congoleum white sheet vynil floor. Very small kitchen, but we had a portable dishwasher. | ||

My first vintage dishwasher
The first vintage dishwasher I bought was an avacado KA KDS-17A. I bought it on eBay. It was about 3 hours away. Cost me more to get it home than it did to buy. I think I paid $25 for it.

I just have to post a picture of the avocado and harvest gold GE Combo that John L. rebuilt for me. Sadly, for you avocado/harvest palette fans, this one is going to be painted white or turquoise.

As a kid, I devoured any architectural and design books I could find. One kitchen design book I remember clearly had a picture of a beautiful kitchen in Paris, a chef's own home. They had a washer very much like the avocado washer in your pic (but white) and I stared at that photo for ages, wondering what kind of machine that was. I could only imagine then it was similar to some of our compact top-load washers, never imagining it was an h-axis top load. | ||
