I picked up a old Kenmore Wringer from the early 1950s to use as a back up machine.
My modern GE front loader is always having problems and it usually takes Sears Service a couple of weeks to get it going again. Rather than go to the laundry, I bought this great old machine. All I needed to do to get it going was replace the cord. Its amazing that you can take a machine that had been stored for who knows how long and still use it.
Do the transmissions on the older Kenmore wringer washers made by Whirlpool need to have oil added? How is this done?
Also when these units are in neutral, with the tub empty of water and clothes, do the agitators sometimes move slightly (1/4) back and forth?

Yes

the agitators do at times move when the washer is plugged in with nothing in the tub. One of mine does but the other two don't. It must be the naure of them. As for the greasing/oiling, I don't worry about it unless there are big leaks on the floor or down the wringer leg or they make noises. I do however put vaseline on the wringer roll bearings about once a month since I used mine as a daily driver. I know nothing about your brand of washer but know someone here will have more knowledge than I do. Happy wringer washing !!

Jim

I can't speak for Kenmore

But I'm in the middle of a restoration on a Maytag and the only way to add oil is to take the transmission apart. Is yours leaking? If not I wouldn't worry about it.

On the other issue with slight agitator movement in neutral, I've seen that a lot. My Grandma's Speed Queen did that and so does my Maytag. It's out of gear but there's slight movement regardless. I also noticed that mine will do that when empty but when full, the resistance from the water stops the movement. When yours does this can you stop it with your hand? If so it's not engaged and not a problem.

Have fun with you new washer. I'm doing what you are only I'll use the wringer as the daily driver and the expensive HE Front Loader is now the spare. They sure don't last. Especially for what you pay for them!

Can you share some moneyshot pics with us please. I have not see this model. I agree with Jim... put a little vaseline on the wringer roll bearings if they are screaching... other than that I have never added any oil to any machine... On the Maytag I put some vaseline on the agitator shaft about once every 2 months to make sure the agitator doesn't stick.

That Kenmore looks so much like the one my mother had when I was very young. Does it have the drain visible in the tub like my mothers did, not under the agitator? She was not amused when I put my toy cars and trucks in it for a quick cleaning.
